why do newer models have that massive bezel at the bottom? I thought thinkpads were supposed to be utilitarian

Wide screen bezel

Just got my first ThinkPad, installed Ubuntu, and feeling very comfy.

Thanks for the memes, /tpg/

Why are you referring to ThinkPads as MacBooks?

Currently have an X220, what's it like to have an X220T? Is the touch screen/pen really useful?

Does the retropad come in 12 inches?

Hey guys I would get a ThinkPad however I want that sensation like I'm touching myself whenever I use a computer. Which is the latest model of the MacBook Pro to not have all USB C?

I have an x220t.
I run ubuntu gnome and feels alright. Touch screen helps with the window manager, and desmume, and sims 3 in wine.
Wacom tab is iffy on the edges, so if you draw your porn outside of fullscreen you're fine.
Harder to dissemble. Has these wires that come from the screen that you need to pop in and out of a tunnel to the wifi card. The board is actually upside down in there.
Gets kind of hot.

Err, not touching myself, BEING touched I mean.

Oh, okay user.

should i get a t430 or a t420?

Is anyone buying the older models for any other reason than to save money?

>buying
>to save money

So stealing them would be better?

JAMAL

I'm not trying to judge or anything, I'm just trying to understand why.

I bought a 170 dollar laptop two years ago and a 20 dollar chink battery. Gets five hours of life with wifi on.
Not so old it shows it's age, and linux and thinkpads love each other so everything (((just werks)))TM

x230t owner here and mine gets quite hot also, is it difficult to replace thermal paste in these things?
Also love using ubuntu with the touch screen.
Do you have any temporary screen burn-in??

Difficult no, time consuming yes. Still easier than my HP 2530p.
I never have the brightness higher than about ~1/4 and use redshift, so no burn in if there ever was any to be found.

25% brightness??
This screen is dark as hell bro

T400 owner here looking for some info on some mobile broadband upgrades. Already flashed my bios and replaced the Intel wireless card with an Atheros one, but now I feel like I might want to grab an internal or ExpressCard broadband card after upgrading the BDC.

Would any of you cool dudes have some good suggestions that aren't locked to a carrier?

my x220t just came with a square charger & round port.. do I need to get a dongle and which one.. why dis happened, is it a common thing?

does anyone use the trackpoint with both index fingers? (kinda like people moving the ouija board glass) I didn't think this was weird until meathead faggot in my cs class called me out on it today

Pretty much all thinkpad IPS displays have screen burn.
Even the newer edp laptops like my friends x240
never heard of it happening that way, but theres adapters for round plug to square pokey bit so I'd imagine there's the same for square charger to round pokey.
So I just got my w540, but I'd like to have one charger at work connected to my dock and one for my bag.
Normally I'd just buy a used official one, but there aren't any 170w
I have one for my w520, and I could get another for like $25
But my problem is all the adapters for round to square don't have the cut outs for the 170w (and I presume 135)
Does anyone know of any that do have the cut outs so I could get a second charger for cheap?

I have an x230t, I love it. I use the tablet configuration for editing PDFs and it works very well. Additionally it is a robust traditional laptop in it's own right. Currently running arch on both it and my desktop, no issues.

Nigga you do what?

Should I get a P71, or a P51 and spend the difference on upgrading its specs?

Yeah, plus redshift.
You get use to it. Now high brightness feels like I'm looking at king neptune's head.

I bought a T430 pretty much maxed out (except for the CPU which is the 3320M) for 190 USD
Did I did well? The guides are kind of outdated nowadays
Also, Is there a way to use GPU Passtrhough to play vidya on GNU/Linux with the Nvidia GPU? I'm coming from a Core Duo X60 so literally everything is quite new for me
I had a T420 some time ago but never really ran *nix on it

Is it worth getting the t420 with the nvidia gpu? or am i just better getting a regular one?

You don't care about the GPU and want the best bang for the buck? T420
You do care about the GPU? T430
You don't really care and just want a nice machine? T430
You want the 7 row keyboard instead of nu-male 6 row but are too retarded to mod your chinkpad? T420
If you want the 7 row and are willing to mod the T430 is better all around
Just use your phone
They shipped you a charger for a way newer chinkpad, iirc the square faggotry came around the T440 or something
You should be able to resell it and get some profit
Or you can stash it away and just get the right charger, they're quite cheap anyways
Are you some kind of ultra slim skelly?
Both are shit, but on Windows the Nvidia GPU is somewhat superior
On *nix they're almost equal
The dGPU models can be housefires if their heatsink isn't repasted and cleaned

I don't believe you.

>Pretty much all thinkpad IPS displays have screen burn.
>Even the newer edp laptops like my friends x240
My T440p doesn't but i ordered the screen separately and did the upgrade myself.

That was what my friend did and his screen burns just as bad as the x220/x220t/x230t we had before
Do you know what model screen you bought?

AUO B140HAN01.3, been using it since March without issues.

What are some essential programs to have with you?
Haven't had a laptop in years, just got a T410

Word
Excel
Photoshop
Illustrator
Premiere
Notepad++
ReNamer
Foobar
MPC-HC

mat
htop
okular
deadbeef
krita
nomacs

honeyview

I want to buy a X230 and fit an IPS. Is a 1366x768 screen terrible for a 12" laptop though?

Why do you autists keep making a big deal about how the older ThinkPads have superior port selection? Seriously, the things your fa/g/s keep spouting are total bullshit.

I count 11 total I/O's on the X230 (I assume the oh so praised X220 is similar):
>1 power
>2 USB 3.0
>1 USB 2.0
>1 audio jack
>1 VGA
>1 mini displayport
>1 Ethernet
>1 sd card
>1 expresscard
Now, these do seem like a lot, BUT WAIT! practically all but 4 of them are still relevant in current year. Let's see...
>VGA
Outdated af shit that, unless your an autistic poorfag, you shouldn't even have any spare VGA cables lying around.
>USB 2.0
Outdated, good luck transferring all your gay porn fast enough.
>Expresscard
Outdated not to mention expresscard were overpriced then and overpriced even now, there are superior solutions today.
>Displayport
Useless then and even more useless now. HDMI was and is superior, not to mention much more widely used.
>Ethernet
Dafuq are you? Living in a third world shit hole? It's outdated and a reminder from yesteryear when cables internet was the only answer. Either you have shitty internet or have shit wifi because you're poor or live in a shit country.
>Sd card reader
Useless and outdated as of recently. No one should use this shit anymore. The only ones who still use it are photo(gay)phers. If you like taking gay ass photos BTFO this site, fag.
So, that only leaves us with 4
>4 fucking ports
That are still relevant in current year.
>Power
>2 USB 3.0
>Audio jack
Arguably it should technically be 3 because power is kind of a given.
Not to mention USB 3.0 is, while still relevant, getting outdated with the release of USB 3.1.

Let me remind of of the pic related that all you Sup Forumsentoofag neets keep hating. That beautiful thing has a total of 5
>5
Modern day ports all usable and will be relevant for a long time. And more than old shit thinkpads.

Does the burn-in ever become permanent? It happens quite quickly (20-30) mins in.
And is it difficult to replace thermal paste?? (x230t)

tl;dr lmao

T430

I wanna add to this On windows for gaymen dgpu is pretty good even though nvs 4200 isn't much
But on *nix since Nvidia is a trash company and because they don't proper drivers for anything not windows you're better off disabling it all together

What's pic related?

>being this ass mad on a thinkpad general
Lmao man calm down I don't care if you use a macbook

Yoga pocket, it was never made.

Awh
That just made me sad

I know it's a troll but someone might fall for it.

>VGA
Still the most common for projectors.
>>USB 2.0
You dont need more than 2 usb3, but if you do, expresscard exists.
>>Expresscard
There was no replacement. Show me where you can put expansion cards in modern laptops.
>>Displayport
Hdmi is more common, but still better than usbc since it only sometimes requires a adapter.
>>Ethernet
Will always be much faster and lower latency than WiFi.
>>Sd card reader
Well you enjoy carrying a extra adapter.

>ebay.com/itm/T420-T430-FHD-KIT/162718125848
lads? is it time? has anyone bought a kit for his T420?

I think I just bricked my W520
No BIOS, just a black screen.

Mute light turns on and nothing else.

Any suggestions?

Why do you believe you bricked it? What did you do?

flashed a custom bios. it booted the first time and I could change some settings.

I think I changed the wrong one and have bootlooped it.

Fuck you Sup Forums just bought my second thinkpad
And what the fuck am I meant to do with it?

I need a laptop to replace my current desktop

I wanted a laptop with a good CPU and a thunderbolt 3 to use an external GPU at home

The 470p is the perfect laptop for me but the problem is that it doesn't have a thunderbolt 3 connector
The 470s does have a type-c thunderbolt 3 but it has a fucking U processor that would bottleneck the GPU anyway

The only other option would be to buy a laptop with a good GPU like the inspiron 7000 with a 1060 or the xps 15 with a 1050 but they have other problems that aren't worth discussing in a thread about thinkpads

Any tips?

Why can't you just keep your desktop and buy a cheaper thinkpad?

because my desktop is slowly fucking itself to death so instead of buying a new laptop AND a new MOBO+CPU+RAM I'd rather spend my money on a good portable device and call it a day

>Ubuntu

multi-track shitposting

How about P51?

Help me please, I've been working on this for hours but can't find a way to fix it online. Nothing has worked so far. I own an x131e with Lubuntu on it. When I install the additional drivers for broadcom 802.11 (wireless card) it works, but once I reboot my internet no longer works. How do I fix this?

Does a T420 charger work on an X60s?

I just got an x230 and it has a 6-cell battery, is there some recommended battery that last longer?

w2c?

I use charger from x61 for x230 so it should probably work.
If it is 20V 90W it should work.

Yep 9cell battery.
I am using it atm on my x230 and I am still shitposting from morning to evening.

Sadly there are very few quad core laptops because normies don't care for them, they rather have better battery life instead.

And then even the most "powerful" mobile CPU is still weak compared to a budget desktop CPU.
Even if they are decent on paper the laptop cooling is generally not adequate so they will throttle under heavy load (this is true about my T460p)

I think the aforementioned P51 is your best option for a "desktop replacement" but it's probably more expensive than upgrading your desktop and buying a dual core laptop.

To be frank I would advice against "desktop replacements".
I only bought a T460p because I don't want to leave any sensitive data or expensive equipment at the office.

Nice, in the Lenovo site they are like 100€ do you know any other brand that isn't too shitty? I still think I'm going to buy the original One

Need some help, the plastic pin divider came out of my recently acquired X220's "always on" USB port. Any way to add another one?

Not him but Yanec is a good brand.

Probably better than Lenovo in fact, since their business relies on selling quality batteries whereas Lenovo wants to sell you a new one every two years.

where did you find Yanec batteries?

Yeah, I mean I considered the xps 15 but even though it has a 1050 it has a 2-lanes thunderbolt 3 so no future-proofing. The only other laptop is the dell 7000 gaming series with a 1060 and thunderbolt 3 but is heavy and big like the P51 (and has no trackpoint)

>t420 and various upgrades arriving next week
I'm so happy lads

The internet.

I got a Lenovo E560 from a friend and it got a weird issue. Booting it gives me the Error 0271 with time and date configuration message which means the cmos battery is either dead or dying (what? It's still not even 2 years and it's already dead?).

So i tries this
> change the battery
No luck

> Boot to windows
It won't even try, i can get to boot menu with F12 and it wont start anything, just goes back to boot menu or shows 0271 and reboots

> Flash bios/uefi
I made the bios update usb (with thay el torino or something magic key to extract the iso and make the img) but it wont boot

> Bios flashback
I tried many key combinations (fn+B or fn+r or win+b or win+r and many more) none of them worked. Is there any other way? (SPI flash is not an option, i dont have tool and skills, sad)

> Change the motherboard
Possible, but will cost (where i am at least) the same price as a new one, so it's a no

If anyone has a solution, i would be very thankful.

>be me
>buy T440s for cheap
>Has Full HD IPS panel
>Realize it's the LG panel that everyone shits on and whines about instead of the supposedly better one from AU Optronics
>Order the panel from AU Optronics and install it

Turns out that the AU Optronics display really isn't that much better. They're really about the same, yes, the LG one has viewing angle issues (I think this is due to the glare coating), but its colors are still excellent.

Don't fall for the meme. It's not worth it. I'll keep the AUO as I can't be bothered to swap it with the LG screen.

Ship it off to Lenovo?

Is it true that work has begun on reverse engineering old ATI Radeon cards to work with free instead of proprietary software, which could enable Libreboot compatibility in future?

>T420s GPU shit out
What do bros?

what upgrades lad?
since I bought my t420 I got:
1TB HDD
+8GB RAM (already had 4)

What I need most is a new display...

There isnt any lenovo center near me (at all) and the warranty is void already. Also i talked to a lenovo certified repair shop (idk if it's legit) and it would cost me the same price as new, he told me he will ship it to lenovo for repair and whatnot. So I'm pretty much wasting money on this old thing. Maybe I'll just give it back, but still, if there is any other solution, I'm open to suggestions.

How do you find the build quality of your T420? Is it the real Thinkpad keyboard and palmrest quality?

I hope you have an SSD in there.

Hey web-dev and smalltime programmer here.

Need a new komputar.

I want extreme reliability, simplicity, smoothness, and easy of use.

Impressed with the trackpoint and keyboard.
I do not want to mod it (in the immediate future).

What should I buy? Currently looking at T420.

Thank you.

>1366x768

nice.

The build quality is very good and sturdy.
Keyboard is pic related(dunno what layout is that but i don't care). the keyboard's feel is godsent and I'm very pleased with it
Yeah, it came with one (120GB)
:( I need to get a replacement

stupid question

do all t420 have dvd/cd-rom drives?

They all have the slot, but you might buy one with a HDD caddy or battery expansion in place of it.

Are there any 3rd party batteries for t430 that will work without doing the bios flash? I wanted to set a custom splash screen but I don't know if it'll work with the altered bios to allow 3rd party battery. Also would just prefer to stay with original one. Desperately need a new battery though because I got t430 with maybe 20% capacity.

Can you recommend an mSATA SSD for the T430s?

t430 if you need that 14" screen or x230 for IPS screen

I dont think it's ever permanent unless you leave your screen on the same image 24/8
and it's not hard to replace the thermal paste, it's just gonna take you like an hour if it's your first time.

>about to buy ThinkPad 25 because love it

>sold out

Fuck. Now what

spend your $1900 on 10 x220s instead

How do you change keys on a thinkpad keyboard without breaking them? Do I need a special key puller?

why would you want to? pcie 2.0 x1 has a slightly slower speed than sata 3.0. also i dont thing they manufacture those anymore

If I want something nice and svelte like an x series but with more up-to-date specs than the x220/x230 what should I get?
What will be the thinkpad of 2025?

The Samsung evo has a sata 3 and msata variant. The msata is slightly slower.

if you want to use up that slot, its better if you get an egpu. if you use an external monitor or have an hdmi in cable, you'll be able to get like ~80%
