Windows 10 /AME/ general

Hey Sup Forums,
a group of us have been working on a build of Windows 10 focusing on privacy and stability.
All telemetry and windows update functionality has been entirely deleted from the system (about 2GB removed). We also removed all default apps (Edge, Cortana of course, Windows Media Player etc…) and replaced them with FOSS alternatives.

Windows 10 has a bunch of improvements under the hood.
One feature for example, is that it can be made portable, that is an install can be transplanted into different hardware or into a VM without ANY issues.

Microsoft have created an unstable environment with their choices for Windows update.
Updates are hardly tested and cause features to break on a weekly basis, not to mention constant changes to the UI.

Windows update, along with SIH and other subsystems, is also used to reset and "repair" any privacy modifications you might have undertaken.

I'm always looking to improve my workflow.

Evaluating something new to me takes an hour max, so it makes no sense to avoid looking for improvements.

OP here, GNU/Linux distros are great, and should probably be used as your main OS.
However, unfortunately certain applications (productivity tools or Games) only run in Windows 10. This is simply providing a bare bones Windows 10 Image that doesn't spy on you or constantly change/crash due to updates.

However, if security is important to you, you should not be using Windows.

It's not as big of a deal as you're making it. I used windows as a kid, so evaluating a new build of windows isn't a huge deal. Evaluating something like a new text editor or IDE is often a huge deal though, because they have completely different ways of doing things. That's why I have mainly stuck with emacs over the years.

Convince yourself.

If any DLLs are modified, that relate to data collection, Windows 10 will automatically remove them and repatch them using SIH (System Initiated Healing).

No update so no security. With windows, it's privacy or security. I prefer both, so linux with a vm for windows only software is the best. For games I use PPSSPP so that don't matter for me.

Thats practically what AME is. The only way to fix it is to completely delete the executable (SIH is present multiple times in the system, in entirely different places, for example)

Thats perhaps one approach (although I doubt that it will help your privacy situation, as win10 has various keyloggers in place for example, and regularly uploads screenshots of your system), however if security is important to you, you shouldn't be using Windows in the first place.

Windows 7 is quite old at this point, and has many of the modern spyware features ported to it if you have the latest updates installed.

So wait, did you by default install Firefox/Thunderbird/VLC/etc.? Because it would be nice if you did. Make it as ready to use as possible. I've tried a windows 10 "lite" and it stripped off too many features to make it "bloatless" so it was unusable to the point that software was uninstallable.

Just check out clonezilla if you haven't yet
there are many tutorials on youtube of how to write clonezilla images to a disk
Clonezilla is the de facto open source disk cloning and image backup utility to use.

If you have a Windows 7 SP1 installation and you actually install every single update that Microsoft has pushed for it through today then yes, it'll be roughly equivalent to what Windows 10 does out of the box, but simplix's update pack AMELIORATES all that (pun very much intended) by not allowing them to be part of the bare native installation to begin with.

This AME project is nothing more than someone with too much time on their hands doing a Windows 10 nLite installation and ripping the guts out for all the stuff that he/she/it deems as not worthy of being in the bare native installation.

It's nothing special, and anyone that trusts this gut-job is apparently willing to risk everything for the work of someone that apparently has no proven track record of reliability or confidence in their skills.

simplix has been doing this shit for many many years now, he knows what the fuck he's doing, his update packs are widely known and they've never been untrustworthy since their inception.

Good that you ask! Before creating AME, I created a script which blocked most of the spyware features Windows 10 had to offer. However, Windows Update will periodically simply reset any changes made in Group Policy, the registry etc...

Windows update, among other such services (SIH for example) cannot exist if you want privacy alterations done to Windows 10.

Gonna download it and try it in virtualbox.
If there is even one connection to any server after booting and starting some basic shit like explorer and paint, then this OS can go to hell too.
If there isn't, then hell yes I am gonna use it.

It's a heavily compressed disk image, it's not something you can directly attach to any VM software. You'd have to write the image to a physical hard drive or SSD first (thereby decompressing it) with Clonezilla, then use a converter to convert that to a VM then make use of it in VMware or VirtualBox.

Keep in mind that this is a clonezilla image, which requires a few steps to install in a VM, but we will provide a VHD file which can be attached to virtualbox directly.
Just keep looking around on the site in the next few days.

you can simply attach the clonezilla live iso to virtualbox and direct it to the image.
