fuck a brillopad with it while its hot

Put in your dick then slowly turn up the temperature until it's just right.

they're single use only, you need to replace the tip

fine sandpaper off the oxidized surface and keep the new surface tinned, better than new

are you cleaning it while hot? do that if not. after you wipe it, flux the tip, then wet it with solder. post pics

doesnt that damage the tip?

i did clean it while hot
>flux the tip
with normal flux?

yes. what do you have? I use a tin of rosin for this. I wouldn't sand the tip; there's usually a coating on there and if you scratch through it the flux will start chewing up the metal underneath. that's really for plumbing irons

no, use f lux flux, its the lux of the flux, kinda rocks.

If your tip is pretty fucked up you can use a tip refresher to remove the gunk.

Afterwards, learn to tin your tip to prevent oxidization.

I figure I'll ask here first.
Anyone know of a good cheap solder station?
I have to solder shit every now and then, not often enough to justify a hakko station but I'm thinking a chink/knockoff could be good as it's not going to be plugged in when i'm not there to babysit it.

Anyone know of a good one to get, preferably with removeable soldering irons and some kind of standard plug/converter.
Digital/analog doesn't matter much to me, as hot enough to melt the solder and maintain heat while soldering whatever I need is all it has to do.

Katsu 936 is great for the price.

The iron is FAR to hot. Don't go over 350 degrees C for RoHS compliant solder. If your iron doesn't have this degree of control then that's your problem, ditch it and buy a decent one.

Also, wet sponges are crap. Get a dry brass sponge. Those actually work. Not on the solder tips in question, though. Those are fucked.

>solder wont stick to it.
You're not supposed to put the solder on the iron

>solder wont stick to it.
lol. the state of numales

solder is supposed to wick onto the tip, friend
I've got a Yihua 936 which I'm guessing is the same thing in a different case, and it is indeed great for the price

You should tin the tip a bit, the flux in the solder helps cleaning it.
Just use a copper/wet sponge to remove the excess solder afterwards.

>for RoHS compliant solder
Who the fuck uses shitty lead-free solder voluntarily?

you've never had to rework a circuit board?

Did you tin it before you put it away the last time you used it?
Do people really don't know that the tip has to be tinned?

>solder wont stick to it.
That's not entirely a bad thing.

Why would you try to have solder stick on your tip while removing the crusty shitty solder from a board?

Found this for the yihua 936

amazon.com/YiHUA-Adjustable-Constant-Temperature-Soldering-Station/dp/B01N4IO59H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508830915&sr=8-1&keywords=Yihua 936

The katsu is digital, or at least the ones I found are, but they seem to be uk only.
I'm a bit iffy on the holder as it looks like plastic, able to say anything in this regard about it?
For 20$ I can't think I would do much better, but I would likely need to get a metal holder for it.

also, just for confirmation, shit like after market tips designed for hako work with it right?

just want to make sure I know what im getting into before I put money down.

...

most modern irons have a chromium plating over the end to prevent corrosion. it's really hard to mess up a tip these days. it's a very newbie-friendly skill!

it's plastic with a metal frame, and it doesn't seem to melt from touching the iron. just checked and the model i have is the 93*7* not the 936, but honestly the screen is unnecessary and the 936 should be great. hakko tips are what you want for it, yeah, but i haven't replaced mine in the three years i've owned it

not sure I can find the same model this was the first thing that poped up that wasn't a full rework station

Just to be clear, the base you have and the one in the image of are at least visually the same? it seems they reuse the base for damn near everything, so if your is the same I am going to assume this one is too.

yep, looks just the same. seems like they've changed the handpiece, but i'm sure it's fine. replacements are less than five dollars (and i strongly suggest having a replacement heater core on hand)

these things?

I may go that way, or I may get a second iron just in case, kind of hard to attach something like that if I dont have the iron to do it.

yeah if you don't have another iron you'd be better off just getting a second handpiece, you need an iron to repair the one that burns out (if it happens)

If your tip is fucked, it's better to buy a replacement than try to retin it. If you have plumber's flux (you wouldn't use it for normal soldering) - you can dip the iron in hot then attempt to apply solder to the tip, then clean off and repeat. Sometimes that works, but you can get 10 perfectly good tips on aliexpress for $3. In the future when you're done soldering apply it to the tip and wipe it off before putting it away.

It's not a good thing that solder doesn't stick to your iron because it would imply the heat conductivity is poor which will cause you to sink heat into whatever you're soldering while also creating cold joints.

Always leave your tip w/ a drop of tin.
