Aside from the >botnet, what do you think of Windows 10

The telemetry tends to (rightly) take up most of the conversation about Windows 10, but I would like to know what Sup Forums thinks of the other parts.

LTSB is bearable.

No reason to use it

it's decent, boots up quickly and it's getting more stable.

absolutely fucking hate forced updates which install things without asking, reset settings, just fucking break shit or stop the system from booting again.

Shit.

Stilling Using NTFS

Oh look they added checksums, how nice.
Now make it actually stable.

I don’t like it. I think it’s slow, clunky, and stuffed with corporate bullshit:
>How likely are you to recommend Windows to a friend or family?
And similar trash. I’m not a fan, sorry.

It's shit. I installed purely because "eh new pc". I installed from an old iso back from 2015 and it needed 5 gb of patches to not crash like a motherfucker. And it crashed WHILE DOWNLOADING THE UPDATES, forcing me to not touch the pc at all while it was downloading them, so I wouldn't risk a crash.

It's the exact same as W7 (the only MS OS I can safely say is great) but filled with useless shit. If I didn't need to play new vidya and W7 worked without any hassle on Ryzen, I would still use 7.

I don't like how the OS feels like it has a mind of its own. They also rearranged a lot of things which makes it confusing. Also, I think the rolling release model is a bad idea since it tends to introduce bugs and break things. It would be great if there's an LTSB version for regular consumers.

>boots up quickly
Nice joke.

yeah its slow, takes like 15 seconds instead of half that with linux

It's good if you build a rig for strictly business or gaming but no one should ever use it as their personal daily driver.

Legitimately the same thing I think about every new version of Windows, it's the best iteration yet. They've slowly improved Windows over years and if you actually interact with all of them regularly you can see the progress that's been made, it's frustrating going backwards to older versions.

It's certainly not perfect but the list of complaints I have had with Windows, has gotten thinner and thinner each release.

I really like the current direction they're taking too, importing a lot of Unix, both actually and conceptually with shit like oneget, vcpkg, nuget, etc. In places that they've straight up implemented Unix it's much better now than it ever was with Interex and shit.
Their Powershell is nice.

Things are turning up well for Windows users.

Shit.
Forces updates and just BSODs itself.

Lots of the initial really bad random bugs seem to be fixed, such as the sound and the start menu not working.

Still a piece of shit though. It installed by itself without asking me, and the forced updates are beyond obnoxious. Also the giant hulking shit deleted my Debian install. Grub was still my boot loader but Debian disappeared after an update. It took me a while to realize but Windows 10 was the cause of this. Besides that it spies on your conversations and gives you ads based on the things you talk about.
>inb4 use an adblocker
Realize how invasive it is for a device to always be listening to everything you talk about and send that data to a corporation. Not to mention the fact that if it uses my microphone without asking it can use all other hardware too. Its literally like a virus.

Can't get Minecraft on LTSB

Everything I need ACTUALLY just works.

Linux poorfags like to claim this yet spend hours tinkering to get some half-working janky system that only supports web browsing, music, and movies.

Wrong.

The new update bricked my SP4 and when I went into the MS store to return it they tried giving me an SP3 twice in a row before realizing I had an SP4.

And then mid-update in the store the new one bricked.

What exactly do you need that Linux doesn't provide? Most programs I can think of have a free open source version available. Also depends on the distro you choose, not all of them are buggy. Examples are Debian and Mint.

Photoshop or any adobe product. Fuck you!

...

Complete junk. Even LTSB/LTSC and Server2016 are shit.

Dual boot or virtual machines. I'm guessing you don't know how to do either.

jesus christ

It doesn't really do anything better than Windows 8 or 7 and forced updates are annoying.
Used it for a while, formatted back to Windows 7 after some start menu database got corrupted and stopped working. Don't really miss it.

They probably rolled out forced updates because they know half their audience are retards who dont know how to update, then complain when some ancient exploit compromises their network.

>t. I'm a tech illiterate

>except for the fact that this pile of shit tells the shitoverlords everything you do with your pile of shit what do you think of the rest of this pile of shit
I hate getting my default app's reset once """new""" windows apps are magicly installed with updates
I hate getting suggested applications even when I've declined them previously (only microsoft programs ofc :^) )
I hate having to autisticly check for changes to telemetry settings because they get """reset""" every ((((forced)))) update
I hate the idea of Windows as a service
I hate the Windows Store
I hate having to use 3rd party programs written by Igor Slavonov (don't worry you can trust them brah :^) ) to disable things like baked in flash or Windows defender
I hate having Cortana being alway running and disabling it breaks the start menu
I hate microsoft accounts being the new norm
I hate the feature lock outs they are doing between the Home/Pro/Enterprise editions (ie. things like no remote desktop on Home editions )
I hate FORCED updates breaking my system
I hate FORCED updates rebooting my system getting it stuck at the bootloader because I don't just have windows on my Computer
Ad's in the start menu
UX inconsistency is rampant

>just windows things
NTFS
no ReFS as a system partition
can't use more than one partition on external devices like USB drives
Development on Windows (unless you are using the only IDE that is usable on this platform; MSVC) is a nightmare...and you better be using WINAPI as well
No usable terminal and you need to be a relic from the IBM mainframe days to enjoy the dos style commands and scripting
Don't mention Powershell cause its a fucking bad joke. Everything you can do in powershell can be done easier in Bash or an interpreted language like python

>just install LTSB :^)
no thanks, sane OS's don't require me to dig through 20 different versions and download an ISO and a trial reset tool (from Igor/Rajeev ofc) to be able to use MY computer
I guess it plays gaymz good though

Nobody wants to waste time dual booting just to use a program, especially if they use it daily.

Running your resource heavy software in a VM is also a fucking terrible idea.

Everytime I see a Win10 thread, it's always a complaint.
That right there is a huge red flag.

Honestly, I think Win8.1 is perfect. It's not too old like 7, doesn't have the forced Metro UI bullshit, and it's not Win10.

I like to play VNs and read Manga. Skype barely works on Linux last time I tried it.

Shitty update cycles
Shitty UI design
Shitty attempt to shoehorn application developers into a Microcuck platform (UWP)

>W10 cuck

Windows 10 just works. All my video games have worked flawlessly.
>disable things like baked in flash or Windows defender
Windows Defender is the best antivirus on the market.

It's ugly and the UI is inconsistent. Also the operating system robs it's users of choices.

For instance, I pay $160 a week for 16GB of data. This is a lot of money but unfortunately the remoteness of where I live makes it either this or no internet at all. Because of this I would like to permanently disable updates and only update when I take my computer into the city.

Sounds reasonable doesn't it? Me having the ability to control when and where my computer updates? Unfortunately windows 10 makes this very inconvenient for me. Sure it IS possible to disable updates on windows 10, but it non-trivial.

Operating systems should give the users choices and control over their computer. Windows 10 tries it's best to take control and choice away from the users.

Another example is running unsigned software. When you try to do this on windows 10 you are hit with a full screen nag that implies that if you run the software your computer will be permanently harmed. Dismissing this and running the software is possible (thank god) but not straight forward and for an inexperienced user they might not work it out.

Windows 10 claim this is for "security" as it will stop users from accidentally downloading and executing malware. But the true motive of windows is to create a walled garden like apple by making it impossible for software publishers to publish for windows without paying Microsoft either for a valid digital signature or publishing it through the "windows store."

It's disgraceful what they've done. It's a bad, ugly operating system that strives to remove choice and limit both users and developers freedom.

The fact that anyone on Sup Forums defends it, ever, is an absolute disgrace.

>The fact that anyone on Sup Forums defends it, ever, is an absolute disgrace.

I'm always confused by how angry Sup Forums gets at seeing other people do what they please with their time and money in a way that doesn't hurt anyone else at all.

illogical things tend to annoy people.

>the other parts
the Store^TM is a joke
the UI is heavily disjointed (still)
the start menu is garbage
the Cortana^TM search is garbage
the Cortana^TM search does not allow you to search all file types (even when indexed)
the Cortana^TM search exists in all versions of windows and is simply renamed in Enterprise/LTSB/etc
the settings menu is garbage (still)
the settings menu is not feature complete (still)
the updates are garbage
it's not stable years later
there are ADVERTISEMENTS integrated into the PAID OS (this alone gets me buttmad just talking about)
the notification area is garbage
no privacy (even beyond the telemetry)
the one drive integration is cancer
the new photo app is garbage
the automatic maintenance is garbage (it worked fine in windows 7)

I only use it for gaymes now and have switched to linux. Windows 7 was the last good windows.

This

Wrong

also I feel like the software quality has gone way downhill. Visual Studio 2017 has been a wild fucking ride so far and it looks like I'm going to have to revert to 2015 yet again until performance issues are fixed.

Ever hears of capped internet? That's in the settings app...

How?

install LTSB and set updates to manually via group policy

>It doesn't really do anything better than Windows 8
the UI doesn't give you cancer for one.

>5+GB IDE
Are you using this ironically or because you have to?

the latter, it pays the bills

The settings interface is pretty garbage, but it does let me customize things that I needed third party programs or registry hacks for in previous versions of Windows.

I don't see hide nor hair of Cortana, Windows apps/metro tiles, or advertising so those don't matter.

After minor amounts of customizing, the interface is better than any previous version of Windows due to changes in file explorer/task manager.

I haven't had any notable stability issues, but the forced updates are shit.

[1/4]
I've been using Win10 Pro for about three years already.
Had paid for my copy of it in this March.
Currently, on the slow ring of the Insider program.
I like the ride so far.

Transferring from 7 to 10 wasn't a real problem for me, as I've done that before (DOS > Win95 > WinME > WinXP > Win7 was my progression).
Changes to the start menu were pretty much the only thing I've noticed right away, but I've quickly come to like searching for apps/settings by typing over manually navigating to the desired element in the menu.
Other parts of the interface weren't changed too much, so nothing changed much. At least to me.
I honestly don't care about the telemetry, so it isn't a problem to me either. Two years of porn and piracy from a non-activated copy of Win10 didn't end in my being locked up in prison, so why would I care.

Although there's still a few objective (as in non-meme) problems with Win10, Win7 didn't have. What I had personally encountered:

[2/4]
1) Win10 is a bitch when it comes to setting up wireless LAN
On one hand, there's that great Mobile Hotspot feature that "just works" and creates + configures said LAN with a single button click. Great.
Bun on the other hand, this function is blocked in GUI (and I honestly hadn't tried launching it via PowerShell, but I doubt it'll work) if the PC doesn't have a connection to the Internet.
That would've not been a problem, were Win10 to allow manual setup of peer-to-peer connection (ad hoc network), but it does not. At least, not on a range of WiFi adapters including the one I'm using myself (ThinkPad T460s). On some adapters setting up wireless ad hoc network is supposedly possible, but it must be done via PowerShell as there's no way of achieving that via GUI.
What's especially infuriating, Microsoft was asked numerous times to allow Mobile Hotspot feature activation without connection to the Internet and the response always is:
>B-but WHY in the WORLD would you want to use a hotspot without an active Internet connection? It's common knowledge that the only conceivable reason for connecting to literally ANY kind of network is Internet access, m'kay. What are you, stupid - thinking you can connect to the Internet without connecting to the Internet?
With a bunch of casual tards leaving comments in the style of
>Yeah, why would you ever do that? Seems pointless to me. I think you're braindead.
Meanwhile, the said hotspot can easily provide the LAN required without the Internet access. If you remove the fucking cord out of your PC after starting the hotspot - it'll continue to work just fine with zero problems what so ever. So, the only conceivable reason for it behaving the way it does and Microsoft refusing to change it is autism.
Meanwhile v2.0, setting up a peer-to-peer wireless connection between two Win7 laptops is a little bit of a chore and it's buggy and unstable, but it works and it can be done purely via GUI.

[3/4]
2) Having two control panels sucks. The main reason being the new one. It's awesome when it's good but it sucks cock when it's bad. The search function works flawlessly. The design is alright - it gets the job done. But for fucking "settings" it's oversimplified and sometimes straight-up retarded. The best example is trying to copy your IP-address - relatively common task. The thing is - you can't. For some fucking reason. You can get to the page that displays your IP in 3 clicks, but because some degenerate had decided it's a great fucking idea - you can't actually select your IP (or whatever else you need) to copy it. No, there's a dedicated "Copy" button on that page that copies all the parameters displayed on the page.
It's a minor issue but it's plain retarded. And the problem is, there are some other minor issues there. Encountering them isn't terrible but it doesn't feel great either.
3) I can't pair my Xperia Z1 with my PC through WiFi via built-in Xperia Connectivity feature anymore. Now it's either a cord or Bluetooth.
However, despite all of the above, my overall impression of Win10 is great. The parts I enjoy the most are:

it sucks. I want to administer my machine how I want, i don't like microsoft trying to force their update schedule on me. I also don't trust them about as far as I can throw them.

[4/4]
1) W fucking SL. Seriously, this thing is amazing. I've been working on the Ruby on Rails project with my teammates using Macs and Win7 and I had a negative amount of problems while setting up the environment (RVM, Rails, MySQL, Cassandra, a bunch of gems, a few clients) - the shit just fucking works. In fact, setting up the environment on Macs resulted in more issues despite the project being mainly developed on Macs from the fucking start. Win7 PCs had to disable a few gems for the environment to even work.
The thing is a godsend for developing, and even when it's not - it effectively enables most of the GNU fluff while still utilizing Win10 GUI. Yeah, I know, for the most of you ricing the desktop is the main priority, but as a guy who prefers functionality - I enjoy Win10 GUI a lot. I've been working on a MacBook Pro for half a year, and fuck that throttling overheating piece of shit. Finder is a fucking mess, fuck it too.
The important thing here, WSL isn't an emulator or any sort of a VM - it really just allows you to run Ubuntu-applicable shit under Windows. There's still stuff that doesn't seem to work, but it's rare at this point.
2) Overall performance. Win10 is pretty fast. It boots fast, it works fast, it's pretty smart on hibernating 'n' shit.
3) Task Manager is greatly improved in comparison to Win7. But I believe Win8 had the same one.
4) It "just works" out of the box in a surprisingly large amount of cases. It actually finds drivers for the most shit on its own. I used to have a dedicated folder containing all the available drivers for my laptop because a fresh install of Win7 used to be barely alive - can't use Wifi and what's not. And I had no need for that on Win10 PCs.
Although, it isn't perfect. There are some legacy issues arising from time to time. For example, if you have an old-ass printer or scanner, they might just not have drivers for Win10. Usually, Win7/8 drivers work in these cases, but sometimes they can be buggy.

>there are ADVERTISEMENTS integrated into the PAID OS (this alone gets me buttmad just talking about)
It's a meme, you dip.

I also trust them about as far as i can throw them*.

lets get real for a moment. You install windows 10 in about 45 minutes and for most linuxes its about the same but remember. Biggest base linuxes are about 1 gigabytes or 2 while windows 10 can be more than 5 gigabytes of data. And what happens when you open them. On the linux there are about 2 functional buttons, 3 are nonfunctional and in those two buttons there are some pictures to play with. Maybe slide down or up. On windows though, you feel like a god. Its professional its fast, its all functional. You have a godlike user interface. The thing that the linux does not have. You have those two buttons in the linux, but you still search google for codes to write in terminal. Linux is free because its not worth a penny. Nobody would sell a paper without taking the money. Just not sure why people still buy android while windows phone does 10 times more. Trust me. When you work with windows you know some genius ground breaker dedicated himself to give you an operational os

>more stable.
When did it ever crash on you? Only crashes I've had were due to overclocking.

Windows10 is a less functional Windows7 + Bloat over Bloat.
I would only recommand it if you need the last games. Or you're forced to use MS product.

>Everytime I see a Win10 thread, it's always a complaint.
>That right there is a huge red flag.
>Honestly, I think Win8.1 is perfect. I
The bigger red flag should be how fast 8.1's market share dropped to nothing.

...

>press power button
>monitor boots slower than windows so i don't even see bios screen, its already in login screen
never had that on lenux

...

You have to be 18 or older to browse this board.

Putting ass-side all the spying bullshit & (((Telemetry))), Its a huge pile of shit, it downloads updates when ever the fuck it wants, and with my 3rd world country INTERNET from Rectum i mean spectrum, they take a fucking eternity. Everything lags while it updates (games, performance, internet, SSD, etc).

When im not getting fucked with the updates, it sodomizes me with its fucking babysitting windows defender, randomly deleting my shit, or putting it in quarantine.

Also, when im trying to dick around with the settings, its a bitch trying to find what i need because of the new settings menu.

The topping on this shit cone would be the fact that it keels HDDs & SSDs, its happened at least 3 times.

I dont use any of its fuckery, like the windows store or its applications.

To me, windows 10 was a mistake, its like a riced out windows 8.1, AKA "a huge shit show".

Pic related is how i feel about this cancer, i mean (((OS))).

thanks. I passed that birthday requirement nearly a decade ago. unfortunately for you, that's not an argument

I like your points but you write like a 13 year old.

Customizable enough for the average person
Reliable enough for the average person

The thing that gets me going is that it gets in the way of the user with "reminders" to use onedrive, or icons of apps to install, YES you can disable this, but when an OS gets between the user and his work, that just makes me mad.

another thing that kills me is the fucking (((publicity))) that randomly pops... IE: The fucking pop-ups that suggest you use (((M$ office))).

There is 7billions people on this planet.
90% of them don't even have a degree.
The average person is incredibly stupid.
Never, ever talk about the average person again.
Talk about Sup Forumsaymen

not in muh country
most of this is whining and butthurt except
>The $USER directory in Windows, specially in Windows 10, is an inexplicable mess.
solution: use portable/standalone versions of programs

Your mom likes my points too.

Overall for me it just werks
What pissed me off mostly was the useless bloatware that comes preinstalled when you use the iso or usb install. Fucking annoying having to delete all that useless junk.
Disabled or at least did the best you could for everything involving privacy and i just don't see these ads people complain about. My system is strong enough that everything runs smoothly. Had very little problems with it especially when it wouldn't update when i first installed it along with it forcing updates on me. I can live with it for now though but with what some updates are bringing in like with the anti cheat they will install into the os
Wouldn't recommend it though for non buisness or leasure use, but for gaming i would and buisness i would tell them to get LTSB or whatever other anons have mentioned

Windows deleted my Monero miner.

Boy, that's rough.
Indeed, it's not like Sup Forums can ask you to take a mental age test after all.

Try hard, man. After all, there was that kid with Down's syndrome who successfully enrolled in a regular university! Who knows, maybe you can do that too! Cheers!

Good riddance.

fresh off the press

My internet spikes when I turn my laptop with w10 on. I don't know how to feel about that other than suspicion

is just network showing excitement at windows coming to say hello comrade

why worry?

Skype barely works on Windows, user.

too ugly so i dont use it. i dont even care about the botnet its just butt ugly. never tried it either.
vista on the other hand is pure SEX

Literally no one in the US knows that, so...

>Likes using Windows. Have very few problems with it for my pleb uses
>Everyone else on the internet abhors the OS like it's the second coming of satan
F-fine then. I-it's not like I was looking to drown in like-minded circlejerks on the internet anyway!

>Most programs I can think of have a free open source version available
I would rather pirate MS Office than use Libre or Open.

People in the Feedback Hub love Groove, apparently. So you might find like-minded people there, user.

Way too bloated. But that's what most people like. They should introduce anorexia version.

bloated botnet, lgbt version is still a botnet, WSL is botnet for pussies
MS is cancer and no amount of shilling could change that, and supporting them is bad

>63064572

Works great on a 4gb ram core 2 quad intel nvidia 9800gt
The only problem is that it's using a sata2 5200rpm hdd to the max. So i need to put in an ssd later. But it has no problem with games.
Can runstarcraft (old patch) and diablo2 without issues.
Also giving +1 botnet my data won't do any harm

You can enable the store through some scripts, just use google

Deployment of it is way smoother than Win 7 and 8.1 at least in my experiences.

Seems to play way more nicely with drivers and since it has no obligation to keep ancient XP-era libraries around you can trim it quite nicely.

Licensing for it is still a cunt though, I miss license keys sometimes.

hello pajeet

windows phone? please...

It's just windows, with the frequent issues it has. Not at all that different from 7.

A while back, I remember some retards that claimed that windows 10 still allowed disabling of updates through the group policy editor. I tried it and, apparently, that thing only applies to the Pro version of Windows, it's absent in the Home version. So any retards that look down on anyone that's complaining about how Windows 10 can't have its automatic updates disabled should keep quiet unless they can prove that their Windows 10 copy is the Home edition.

But why would you use Home edition?
