Because Slavic people can understand each other even if they speak a different language if they speak slowly, use common slavic vocabulary and make an effort (personal experience), and some Slavic languages are fully mutually intelligible (Czech/Slovak, Bulgarian/Macedonian, Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian). On the other hand, there is no way in fucking hell that a Slavic person would understand a Germanic language and vice versa without learning or exposure (through exposure meant some Slavic dialects contain German words, for example the Trnava dialect of Slovak my grandaunt speaks [like tisch, frištik,krumple etc.])
