"1995 isn't nostalgia yet" Edition TM

What was your first OS?

First one I "used" when I was like 3 years old: DOS

Unfortunately I didn't get to experience DOS until I was like 15, my fist OS that I can remember was Windows 95.

I was wondering why I loved playing solitaire, freecell and minesweeper and then I realized that I had a 56k modem and all I did was download things. Lots of music. A single mp3 was about 3mb big and would take 15 minutes to download.
I played a shit ton of freecell.

Freecell was one of those preinstalled games I never touched for some reason. I always played Minesweeper and Pinball, because I didn't understand the card games.

Used to watch my sister play Solitaire and Hearts and be fucking amazed.

Grandpafag here.

I've seen things...

Win98
That just shows how new I am

This screen made me the man I am today.

I used to be an Acorn fag.

Felt good to have a computer that worked.

ReactOS
FreeDOS

Apparently I'm a faggot, what is this screen?

I love my XFCE (Arch Linux) Win95 theme. Comfy af

Windows XP, proudly
still remember the Metroid wallpapers I had on my desktop from Prime 3, even though I never even got the game until last year.

it was ok

can't remember what specific distribution it was but chances are it was either mandrake or debian with KDE 1.something on my dad's computer at the time.

ms-dos. i remember my first virus. ping pong.

I really want to use this wallpaper but it hurts my eyes.

This right here.
I wish my parents/brothers had told me back then that you can actually write programs for it yourself, and how to do it is described in the manual. They just gave me a piece of paper with the commands needed to load a game from the floppy disk.

haha

I know that feel. If I had started writing programs way back then I'd probably actually be okay at it by now.

That fucking keyboard...

Old KDE was super comfy.

Makes me wonder whether Sir Clive was just trolling people by that point.

Weird, I didn't know GNU/Linux existed until I was a teenager, so I have no nostalgia for older versions, but I do wanna go back and play with some of them.

Trinity de offers the same comfy on modern distros

Same here.
Had a tape drive, a cartridge with 3 games, and later we got a floppy drive.

in the beginning I had to launch games with "load(...)", later there would be a "Menu" on the floppys which gave a list of games/programs on the disk

the most I could "program" was type PRINT and draw symbols line by line
shit was cash

This

I love Trinity. I use it myself on my t60. I totally recommend it over MATE for a fork of a dead DE.

pic related

also fuck this retarded IMAGEboard for not supporting webp

Leaving behind bitmap graphics and text was a mistake.

mac os on those colorful mac machines at school
then 98 and later on ME on the first machine i had at home

Mate is in active development at least.
Trinity most likely won't support Wayland.
I also use it on my t60, mainly to watch 4:3 anime. Good shit user

this

This. Just System 7.5.5.

>escape velocity

i used to play that game on mac. dont think thats what your image is referencing, but still

Heres what shaped my early brain

>find and eat the analgesic

My first OS was 98 and I'm pretty sure I spent all of time time on pic related since I didn't have internet in my house.

Whatever the OS was called on this.

>also fuck this retarded IMAGEboard for not supporting webp
THANK YOU
SOMEONE FUCKING SAID IT

for real
>durrrr let's support webm videos and not webp

I did start writing back then and am bretty OK at it now.

Parents made me read/work through the C64 manual before I was allowed to play any games. And the manual contained a BASIC tutorial. Infected me with the programming virus.

That's fucking smart. I'm gonna do that to my kids.

>uck this retarded IMAGEboard for not supporting webp
memeformat

>implying Binbows wouldn't be more trustworthy than W10 anyway

Anyone else use the NTVDM from Wine to run 16-bit apps on 64-bit Windows?

The thought never crossed my mind. Now I want to.

Neat.

user can you explain how you got the taskbar and start button to look so good?

applesoft and dos 3.3

KDE 3.5.10 was last true and usable KDE. It was probably the best DE on Linux ever but because freetards are incurable faggots they are they had to throw it into rubbish. KDE4 and this current abomination are pure shit compared to comfy 3.5.10
>DE which crashes 10+ times a day
>u wot m8?

>you didn't eat the peanuts 30 turns ago

Not that user but bumping for curiosity

why hello there

gs/os

best os

It's what happens when you sell a platform as a toybox for developers. Imagine if these monkeys went to a boss who pays them and said "we're going to break the stability of the DE for a decade so we can make it go woosh, and you have to pay us". I doubt they'd still have a job.

I'd like to know how the manual install goes for this

Power without the price, bitches.

>1980s home computers
>"grandpa"

That can't actually be Windows 2000 right?

Commodore BASIC and GEOS

but it is
gotta touch up the CSS a little though

What are some old OSes still usable for most things today? I've tried a few:

Win2K - some guides on YouTube for how to update and apply patches to make it pretty usable, run WinXP applications, etc.
MacOS 9 - have a G4 running this. Classilla is the only usable web browser and it gets the job done OK, but breaks with most web apps
MorphOS - installed on a G5

if all you're doing is shitposting 2k does the job just fine

Could always try Haiku, or RiscOS if you have aPi hanging around.

am i retro yet?

it's right in the filename, dude.

give it a few more years

Really win2k ?

MS-DOS 3.0

yes

Honestly if emulators work well and there's a decently modern browser available why even use anything but win95

NT is a much better kernel

This disk is older than 90% of the posters on Sup Forums.

2k* woops

Sharp MZ 700 Basic

Not everything needs to be a god damn general.

hardware support and modern features

Fuck off retard as a site in this format becomes more populated threads dedicated to regular topics become more and more common, common fucking sense

"Modern Features"
"Hardware Support"

Don't remind me. I started out with this.

You entered a thread you didn't like and now you're mad, what do you do?

>Enter command

I mean if you don't care about that good for you but most people do

>Let me vaguely dance around giving any actual reasons and appeal to popularity

"Most people" are normies
Fuck off normie we both know all you do is browse the internet 95 percent of the time

>wah wah normies stop using modern software
ok

post css

Low effort shitpost, seriously should be ashamed

pastebin.com/JNbYL1As
post your cutest anime girl in exchange

Says the guy who thinks not using not using win2k as one's daily driver is normie behaviour

...

I miss early to mid 2000s internet and tech culture
And some design stuff from it

...

Normie behavior is caring what "Most people" need and not using what works for you

Shitposting when you get called out being a low effort poster that's too stupid to define his vague points isnt normie behavior but it sure is retarded

I explicitly said that if you don't care about those then good for you, what the fuck are you on about

What's the point of you even posting?

All I did was respond to you

With a low quality, vague answer and then started shitposting when I asked "what"

Low quality, low effort shitposting. Why even bother?

I presume he is using chicago95

I feel nostalgic for a time on the internet before social media.
If we could have the power and features of today's web without the miserably slow speeds and terrible user interfaces of the late 90s early 2000s, that'd be great.

Windows 3.11 on a 75MHz 80486
You're a special kind of madman for doing this, and I want to be just like you.

Why do you assume anyone who disagrees with you is shitposting exactly

I'm not pointing out why your posts are shit one by one, retard

Why do you need me to spell everything out for you? This is sad.
