i wouldn't say they're obscure in the sense that they were widespread in use back in the day, but things like VMS, TOPS-10/TOPS-20, and NOS running on big iron are pretty obscure and unknown to most people in this day and age. seattle's living computer museum has a bunch old mainframes and minis running them, and you can request shell accounts for all of them. you can then telnet/ssh into them and mess around, and they have tons of documentation for it all.

There really aren't enough operating systems made by schizophrenics. I'm quite mad myself but sadly have lackluster programming ability. maybe the reason all os seem similar to me is just a limitation of the hardware.
