/uni/ - University General

How's your class work coming along?

How's your research/internship/part-time job going?

Any big job interviews or offers?

Graduated and dropped out of a master's program about a year ago now. Doing good so far.

...

just finished a coding bootcamp

expecting the job offers to roll in any day now..

also applied at walmart and bestbuy just in case

Been interning as a Web dev for over a year, writing PHP and JS mainly. I don’t know that to do next, look for a job, keep interning, any help Sup Forums?

isnt the point of an internship to eventually get brought on as a full employee?

how do I stop skipping classes? They're all so boring.

>how do I stop not doing something
Actually start going to classes idiot

stay on /r9k/, you fucking shitstain

Classes are rough, general relativity is kicking my ass.

I work for the university in a z-pinch lab and that's going quite well.

I'll likely die poor.

I've realized I don't give a fuck about software engineering and have basically made my own degree that combines the CS and pure math courses as opposed to all the SE and programming classses.

I call it a revolutionary name
"Computer Science"

Happy to get the fuck out of Java classes and start doing number theory

Bad.
Working on L-System for my java class. But I don't understand what I have to do exactly. I don't want to be a failure...

Last semester last class: senior capstone
Last school project: build a PHP website for the local government (small city)

Graduated and got a job as a Reporting Analyst a week later.

Do your internships.

For me its been good for meeting chicks and nothing else. Giant waste of time and money. Tired of feminism shit hurr durr women in coding being propped up. Sjw emails. Overstaffed to the brim and waste money left and right. Half the professors have never worked ib the private sector. Mellenials are so antisocial and no one talks in class. It's fucking pathetic.

Wow you just went to a bad school with shitty people desu

applying places as usual
got rejected onsite by my #1 after being flown out which i thought i was a really good fit for
currently still "studying" computer science

2 quarters left. Have done the most challenging classes at this point so other than networks I can have some really comfy pseudo-NEETness. Ready to get out of here and probably kill myself when I realize wage slavery is terrible and I should have become a NEET.

Is data structures supposed to be a hard class?

Please be honest. I'm taking it right now and struggling hard.

What was your experience like in the class?

absolutely loved data structures more than any CS class I've taken so far

worked my ass off to understand stuff and did fine. also very important for interviews in the future, as well as algorithms you'll probably get from another class

>What was your experience like in the class?
Rough at first, but once you understand a self-balancing tree things start to click.

>tfw you could never understand why some hash functions were better than others
its fooking magic m8

My uni pushues pure math over programming So i basically leearned nothing in 2 years that i didnt know in the first place

Though i now have a metric fuckton of knowledge in pure maths and its fucking useless

full time employed
it's okay money but i don't really care for this particular job
gonna stick it out for at least a year though

Not hard but just a lot of algorithms. Tons to memorize, just practice each algorithm and read the book they give you. Making a study guide would work as well.

Want to die. Work is increasing. My degree has been more writing then programming and its possibilities me off. One more semester and I'm free though.

>possibilities
fucking phoneposter

Fuck you.

It was like 1 hour of new cs knowledge for every 15 hours of math knowledge for me, really losing motivation. I just hope the last couple of semesters are where the real learning is.

Last semester applied to 58 jobs 5 interviews, 1 rejection out of those 5. I am applying literally everywhere that isnt the coast or places with hot weather, dont think thats too picky. I feel like I should be more worried about not having an offer lined up but I just don't care. school is super comfy and i barely do any work

> finished all my study for the semester
> got nothing left but to drink and watch anime all day

uh, cool i guess...

really makes u think

not good probably just failed my java exam
What makes it worse is i really fucking tried

> unironically failing an exam on java

How did you try?

CS classes are to easy. Math classes are too hard.
No inbetween with this shit.

You should consider suicide, you stupid frogposter.

I'm doing an internship where the point is to have a proof of concept made as cheaply as possible.

Graduate next school year. I guess my shits going along fine, everything seems sort of easy but I guess that's because I don't spend a lot of time partying or anything fun like that.

Should probably apply for internships but I'm lazy and don't want to travel just for the summer because there is fuck all internships around where I am. Planning on moving to where I can find work after I graduate or maybe just stay here and work at mcdonalds or something. I don't really know what the fuck I'm going to do when school is over.

Recently graduated for Software Engineering. Missed out on top class honours by a few marks but I wasn't planning on going into a PhD so I don't mind.

I picked up a public service graduate position earlier this year but it doesn't start till next year. Kind of worried about how it will go. I got good marks but I realised towards the end of my degree that my university has a horrendously low benchmark. I just hope I'm up to the standard of the other new hires. I'm also trying not to let the stigma of public service positions bug me. I interned for a startup and really didn't mesh with it so I'm hoping it suits me better.

I'm trying to discipline myself and continue learning and practicing but without assigned tasks I find it hard to stay motivated. Sometimes I feel like a rubber stamp engineer or code monkey. I can work things out but always feel like I'm missing a deeper understanding of concepts, and a lot of people I interact with seem to have such a broader knowledge of computing. It's got me worried I spent the last 4 years training and studying for a career that won't last. Sorry for blog post but I don't have a lot of people to talk about this kind of thing with.

Recently transferred from a community college and taking data structures 2 class. I'm learning the same things I learned from my data structure class from the CC. But I don't think I did too well on the midterm, some questions were just retarded.

finishing my bachelors in cs. Only one class left, and my thesis ofc. But I called out the prof on his dickery on his evaluation sheet (approving only 40% to the final exam, and 40% only passing the exam, leading to a massive 84% drop out rate) so there is that...

STOP PUSHING ME

Very nice.
Current (third) semester is more difficult and challenging than two first semesters combined, but at the same time- much more interesting. I'll have to retake my programming class from the second semester- and it looks kinda funny given the fact that now I only have 5.0s (the best score possible) :^)

btw

Last 10 months of my PhD now. I worked full-time during my master's, so I already have some work experience + I'm doing my PhD in collaboration with a company.

Not sure what to do next? I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to get an offer from the company I work with, but it's a small-ish company so I don't know whether or not the pay will be very good. Obviously pay isn't the most important to me (why would I go from an industry job to do a PhD if it was), but I'm tired of struggling to make ends meet. My supervisor vented the idea that there MAY be a postdoc opening up. At the research institute I'm doing my PhD, postdocs are paid quite good actually. But the downside is, of course, being a postdoc. The upside is that I probably get to do more research and travel more and make new connections.

What would you do, Sup Forums ?

Graduated in summer with top honors. Got a scholarship with a research company for a CS research masters and a full time salary to boot.

Feels good. I'm pretty sure they will offer me a free PhD too but I'm not sure if I'll take it. The reasons being it takes around 4 years and my pay during those 4 years will be relatively low.

I plan on going into industry rather than stay in research anyway and I've heard a PhD doesn't really impact progress up to the peaks of the corporate ladder, but a masters is much better than a degree for faster career progression. I feel that 4 years experience in the industry will help me more than 4 years into a PhD.

I'll have 2 years experience by the time I'm finished and a pretty unique skillset (the likes of which the big data-center companies would be interested in.) Unfortunately (or maybe not) this also means I'll probably have to move to the US as that's where most of the work in what I do is done. Not sure I want to do that.

Still, as someone who dropped out of engineering because he's a brainlet and got depression from it for a number of years, I'm doing better than I could have ever hoped for.

>offer me a free PhD
Uh, PhDs are usually "free" in that it is an salaried position.

Of course, but seeing as I just explained that for my masters I thought most would infer that's what I meant....

Which country is this?

Nice try CIA.

I'll just say Europe. It's not too uncommon in euro because EU give research grants to companies. I'm pretty sure at least some of my funding is coming from an EU grant.

I'm and I'm European too. I'm just asking, because in most of Europe (except UK and a couple of other countries) university degrees are usually free[tm], and most European countries adhering to the Bologna process require a master's before you can even do a PhD. In addition, in these countries, a PhD usually lasts 3 years (4 years if you also teach, which usually only applies to universities not to research companies).

on my last year of master's, it's easy but awfully boring
>muh python class
>muh BI
>muh it counseling
No idea what to do for final work.
part time job is shit and is basically holding me as a slave because I was retarded enough to sign a shitty contract
also

It's also a research institute I work for, and as such the Msc's and PhD's are actually awarded by my city's University, so I would indeed have to teach if I did it and it would take 4 years. There's nothing stopping you here from submitting your thesis early though, but you'd want to be damn sure it's good enough.

Degree's here are "free" in that the govt. subsidies the tuition fees but you still have to pay some other fees to the tune of a few k a year.

I know at least one guy here who never actually finished his masters and rolled his work into a phd. I wasn't aware that was even possible but perhaps you can do it with a formal review process or something. No idea if we follow the Bologna process.

Postdocs do get more here too, but from what I've observed you should take only if you didn't have time to job hunt while finishing your PhD. Since you said you want to go to industry anyway you should use the year to go job hunting. Try exploring what connections your institute has with industry companies too.

Dell/EMC came to my institute and were looking for a senior research role with my skills that only required a masters and 2 years experience. That would be a nice one to start with and I know for a fact that they accept and process applications from my institute before they open it to the public.

Also get on LinkedIn if you're not already. I was approached on there by Huawei for a senior research role too despite this one needing 5 years experience. They simply told me they couldn't find anyone with that experience but I had the skills they wanted. I couldn't take it but again it's a great headstart if you can actively find something like this or wait until one does instead of jumping into the first offer you get.

Why'd you drop out of masters?

Very right and proper posting. Ambition is a fucking scam? Oh look there's Elon musk.

Talk all you want about neets, but this society isn't made in mind for people. That perspective aside, I think Indians are better prepared for this world than most and I would credit the bhagavadgita, among other things like parts of Buddhism. Psychedelics, most of all, the root of the lessons.

oh yea, someone please explain phds to me, preferably a European. I finished my bachelor's in a technical university(polytechnicum) and am finishing my master's in a technical '''college'''(I still don't know the difference). Basically both of these have those 'tehnical studies' that aren't the same as the typical 'academic study'. So for example, the state university in the capital doesn't allow students to enroll into their master's program if they've finished a technical bachelor's, they only accept academic ones. Other way around works since it seems that technical studies are just a worse version of academic ones, focused a bit more on developing competency for a straight-out-of-school job. Problem is that some academic universities allow this kind of stuff, although you often have to take extra classes to fill in the difference between studies. Supposedly some universities allow this on the phd programs but don't really make it clear on their site.

My question is how do other European countries deal with this? The implementation of Bologna we got here is a horrible abomination and nobody knows what the fuck is going on anymore. I'd like to eventually go for a phd but don't know if these shit degrees will be worth anything or accepted, since I'd like to do it in some other country.
If it means anything it's Bologna, bachelor's was 180 ECTS, this '''master's''''(or specialist degree whatever the fuck that means) is 120 ECTS.
Also if anyone here got a phd, at what age did you start it? 23 seems kinda young for it

Im struggling with java oop concepts. Just dont get how oop works.

Mama Im sorry I disappointed you....

Just hide everything you can and that sums up OOP in Java

>How's your class work coming along?
shit. I am bored as fuck.
Network class right now, which is boring if you already have a CCNP

>How's your research/internship/part-time job going?
I am working as embedded dev. Quite comfy tbqh

>Any big job interviews or offers?
no, i dont care lol.

So far so good.
I am a freshman studying Computer Engineering at the community college.
I'm doing well in my classes, connecting with students and teachers, participating in clubs, and really becoming a student leader!
I've got an interview for an IT internship next week.

NOT TECHNOLOGY

I'm always drowning in hw and projects. Almost out now though. Added a shit ton of buzzwords to resume I think someone will take the b8 only to realize I'm meh.

Make some shit if you have free time and post it on GitHub. Even if it's shit.

Oh yeah
team members:
Pajeet - took 2 other hard classes, constantly shows up late, and don't know where we are most of the time.
Actual White Autist - Silent, but will talk when needed, does a lot of research, and works on his part diligently.
Me - Internet dead for 2 1/2 weeks, no A/C, still getting work done at school and client location.

At this rate we'll be done, pajeet will be dead weight, but passing, and I'll finally graduate this hell hole.

>Graduating Senior
>Get really nice offer at a company in my area
Im failing my 'advanced' stats class because im not studying like a degenerate. I might not make it boys

They are inherently useless , unless you are too scared to work or wanna go into research there's no reason to pursuit post bach in cs.

This is my struggle as well, difference being its not that their wording but the fact people who sat at schools for 30+ years never working a day in their lives try to teach you what is the norm in industry which in most cases they are completely wrong. I can't convince myself to accept their bullshit

Starting a paid PhD in physics and taking a lot of data analysis and machine learning courses alongside it.

I'm starting to get really fed up with cs brainlets. They bitch every time there's math in their courses. Worst pajeets run out of the lecture hall when they see an equation.

Is your CpE coursework more EE or CS focused? Asking because I plan on going into Computer Engineering

Is the advisor supposed to be helpful? I swear the god all my advisor does for me is lifting my holds. Can't get anything out of him.

>got my IT degree
>finishing up History degree

ready to make a dive into research and archival work using my knowledge from both areas of study

Freshman in software development.
Classes are so stupidly straight forward I have trouble staying awake. Our "essential mathematics" course is just shit I did in secondary school.

...

>studying CS
>super good at math
>can't program for shit
Am I doomed ?

>didn't have any plans when I got to uni, no particular aspirations
>tfw finishing meme soft science degree I chose out of pressure from my mom to just pick something
>getting interested in tech now
>feel like I am now mature enough and have my shit together enough I could focus on getting a CS degree for 4 years that would give me better job opportunities
>GF just wants me to finish school so I can get work somewhere besides where we live
>feel like I'm wasting my time finishing this stupid degree
What do

i can't get myself to go to the gen ed classes. biology, management, econ... so boring, no friends, and the teachers post all their shit online so there really is no reason to go. i show up for the tests and that's it. still make it to all my cs courses tho.

>good at math
have you taken post calc/linear algebra math like real analysis or abstract algebra? if not there is still a chance you could be awful at math too

you've already done the 2 years of bullshit Prerequisite courses right? all those humanities and English and Upper Division humanities and GLobal studies and Diversity bullshit is done right?

Then it'll only take you 2 or 3 years MAX to get the degree. and it's fucking worth it man.

I did 1 year of engineering I dropped but was doing fine

>Programming 1
Finding arrays difficult to understand, handed in 3/5 tasks this week.
>Introduction to Computer Science
Binary is piss easy, I've got just under 24 hours to write a 1500 word essay though.
>Computational Mathematics
I'm waaay behind in this module, probably going to fail.

What don't you understand about arrays user?

accepting user input in the form of integers and sorting an array in ascending and descending order.

what language?

Personally, I found datastructures to be easy, but algorithms is killing me. Some people find algorithms easier and data structures harder.

You could focus more on data science with strong math.

I'm studying systems engineering, what's the main difference with Informatics Engineering or CS? Never bother checking it out

C#

A freshmen in Mechatronics
Don't know what to expect for class quality. Taking C++ class next semester.

college has been on strike for the past month. feelsbad

>only have to my bachelor thesis and write a paper in a subfield of pattern recognition and signal processing within 1 year
Feels great mang. I pity all those fools who didnt take extra courses to clear their last year

Sorry I have autism and I don't know how to reply to this (not actually that user)

haha i just got my oop exam results and i passed kys faggot

A lot of colleges still have written tests. Not sure if this is good thing or not

at least in south america, yes...

thats really easy, use a simple sorting algorithm like bubblesort for sorting your arrays

I'm doing internship in a company, and I have to be in this group of other students who can't code for shit and have zero capability of solving and figuring out technical issues at all on their own. I have to babysit them to do even the simplest of tasks. It's literally the tier where they try to send you files by pasting to you the location of where it is on a hard drive. So I have to come over and do it for them.

Basically I do like 95% of the actual code. It sucks so much ass, especially since we have to work on the same project and do the agile meme. I have to waste extra time on fixing it whenever they break something.

Graduated. Did no internships/full-time work for 2 years. Now completely fucked for getting a job and can only rely on nepotism and lying because that's how HR is. Don't be like me.

Thinking about dropping out, too lazy to study.

2 years out of college
No job
Tried everything in the book from redoing the resume to trying to contact people for coffee or phone interviews; no results
Parent getting laid off
Honestly Considering hanging myself and no one from Reddit, Quora, or Sup Forums can help because I don't get any advice

Acing my CS/SE classes and failing my Physics classes
I'm thinking of dropping out of Physics and focusing on CS/SE, but I'm so close to the B.S.

gfs come and go, if they don't want to support you in aspiring to becoming the person you want to be, you should ask yourself if that's someone you would like to spend your life with. Study what makes you happy, don't compromise your life because of someone else.
