I think it's far more interesting than gymnastics, cycling, equestrian, and probably some other events, too.
I agree that it looks fun but also difficult. My grandfather used to play when he was a young man and apparently it was very rough.

He grew up down by the port and often swam in the river as a boy. Also, for exercise, he used to swim 1 km every morning until he was about 60 years old.

Make a schedule and study Kanji, reading, listening comprehension, convesation etc. regularly. Getting to an intermediate level in Japanese isn't too hard, mastering the language is.
