I have a question for you lads before I decide to make the plunge into Linux. Will using Linux make me more likely to have meltdowns like Stallman?

How do I change my terminal and GUI fonts? If I wanted to download a new font where would I have to put it?

The more Linux you use, the GNU you become

You might run into problems which will cause you a lot of headache to fix first. Just remember one thing: in anger you defeat only yourself.

I know debian doesn't come with sudo but do i even need sudo? Is sudo even useful?

It does come with sudo

It's a good practice to not leave yourself root. It's a security flaw

>I know debian doesn't come with sudo
the absolute state of deblets

i want to fug kyoko

packages.debian.org/search?keywords=sudo

Wtf, i thought it was the other way around?

I know, but net iso it doesn't actually.

What do you even mean by that? The net-iso allows you to install the system from the internet, it comes with the whole content of debians quite large repository.

And if you're talking about that it doesn't get automagically installed, that's still wrong since installation of sudo happens automagically if you don't set a root password during setup.

Posting from the other thread, using i3, set my unfocused as #3e3e3e. But comes off as a much lighter grey.

Guys, how do I get those cool as fuck desktops I see in ricing threads?

the easy way would be to install the fonts through your package manager
manually, you can put the font files in ~/.fonts
then run `xset +fp $HOME/.fonts` and put it in a startup script
do the same for subdirectories of ~/.fonts
see the arch wiki for more details
if you're using xterm or rxvt, you can define settings for them (including fonts) in ~/.Xresources, again, see the arch wiki

it doesn't come with sudo installed

It does

don't know about debian 9, but jessie sure as hell doesn't

It doesn't. I'm on 9.2, had to install it myself

If you don't set a root password in the installer it will install sudo and let your first user use sudo to run things as root.
it's written right there and works too (I know, nobody ready that wall of text).

And I'm pretty sure it does. see Since you set a root password. Take responsibility for your actions. I'm pretty sure the installer tells you that even.

Sorry, didn't meant to quote.

i am fucking around for 2 days now with distros for my thinkpad. first reply i install and stick to it. inb4 gentoo meme

debian xfce. Just update the repos

nixOS

So I've been messing around with CAE Linux for a while now and decided that nah, I want to go back to Windows 7, it fits my needs better.

Question: Is there a good way to burn a Windows 7 .iso onto a USB with CEA Linux? It's Debian based and I'm just not well versed enough to figure out how to operate WoeUSB.

> $ sudo gdebi ../woeusb__.deb

The fuck is architecture?

>I want to go back to Windows 7,
Then kindly fuck off from the GNU/Linux thread and ask fglt. Nobody wants your kind here.

Ignoring the security issues, I like sudo because the password prompt gives you a moment to think before you (accidentally) do something stupid.

>The fuck is architecture?

Sure is nice and friendly here. Anywho, fglt, thanks.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_architecture
I meant what kind of value it wants off of me faggot.

Christ it's like you spergs are actively trying to chase away anyone interested in linux.

install gentoo

no you don't

>he mindlessly enters sudo commands and needs a password prompt to realize what he's actually doing

>Christ it's like you spergs are actively trying to chase away anyone interested in linux.
That's no concern for us when you want to ditch it for Windows 7 anyway.
And even if that weren't the case you just don't make me want to spoonfeed you.

1. Is USB 3.0 fast enough to run a KDE distro from? I was thinking maybe run Fedora KDE from a 16gb. Is the bandwidth enough?
What's it like compared to running Fedora from SSD (which is my current setup)?

2. Why does OpenSuse not set up an ext4/btrfs LVM to use up the full space on the drive, instead it just uses up a bit? Especially as this is a desktop system which I don't really want to fuck around with it have to resize partitions. It feels like they made this only for servers.

1. Shit gets loaded to RAM anyway, but startup times may be slower.

2. Probably becasue it's an iso, if they make it larger it won't fit on smaller devices. Just resize the partitions.

Running a command with su also gives you a password prompt.

Start with a minimal install of your favorite distribution.
Find what display manager you want to use, install it
Launch it
Get customizing

I'll take 'What is dualboot?' for $50 please.

Actually, no, don't, keep the dualboot. When your first response to a newcomer having trouble is insults, then this ain't a community I want any part of.

is bspwm better than i3?

>2
Why would the ISO matter? I can resize the partitions but all other distros do the logical thing of using the entire drive space from the start. Only Opensuse does this weird shit. It's a really fucking excellent distro otherwise which makes it even more annoying that they do dumb crap like this.

Not him but why did you think it was going to go well in asking to install Winshit?
We are friendly, but notice the friendly part is attached to the Linux part. And even then the friendliness is autismo friendliness, which is unpredictable at best.

While we're talking about OpenSuse, is there any way to change Abort to Cancel? It's so jarring, why do germans have to be different and edgelords?

It's not so much doing things "mindlessly" as it is accidentally entering typos. Having an extra opportunity to C-c and correct a mistake is really nice.

>he doesn't "murder" his processes instead of killing them
>he doesn't "centipede" the output of a program to another's input instead of piping
>he doesn't "kill the Jewish influence over the internet" instead of blocking ads

Umm sweetie.....SUSE might not be for you. :(

yes

>display manager

I realize this is a stupid question but how can I increase the scroll speed. I am on Xfce using a generic wired optical mouse. (Insignia NS-PNM8013 if it matters)

My four year old Arch system is getting kernel panics on boot. Something about elevator. Anyone got a clue as to what's causing it? I'd rather not have to bust out my Arch live CD

Is there an option in the mouse settings?

This is all I see. Also, when I increase the sensitivity slider there is no effect. So this leads me to believe that the Mouse and Touchpad settings don't even do anything to begin with.

>realize openssl does not come with zlib on Linux mint
>compile it with zlib
>Which openssl, everything seems good
>meh I don't need the other openssl now right? I'll just remove it
>sudo apt-get remove openssl
>proceeds to remove 65 packages
If I reboot I am facked right?

Mind to share polybar dotfiles?

trying to install league of legends on a zorin OS but the whole process is being a bitch and Im an amateur. Web searches just got my hands filled with bunch of different things to enter into terminal and I dont know whats wrong .-.

>ZorinOS
There is your problem. Linux Mint or *ubuntu are easier/have more support

Guys, I can't install nothing from AUR, I keep getting this error:
==> WARNING: Failed to install built package(s).
I've searched for it but everything I got was removing cw, which is something I apparently don't even have. Any idea on how to fix it?

I've installed Arch with Gnome. Disabling it is enough to start using other WMs?

maybe cuz its USB? idk

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_polling_rate

>using an apt based distro

you can also edit libinput manually (if that's the driver you're using)

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_acceleration

Read the Arch Wiki CAREFULLY.

Hint: what do you need to install before trying to use the AUR?

>what do you need to install before trying to use the AUR?
nothing actually. makepkg is part of pacman

ix.io/C7S

pacman

>arch users

What should I use then?

...

were you at least root or sudo?

Why do you have a windows key? Cuck much?

Your probably should have read what it planned on removing and said no.

I'm on Devuan unstable and I haven't gotten xfce4-power-manager to work properly, as in not suspending and showing proper battery levels. Can someone with a SystemD-free system walk me through?

...

imagine actually caring about a stupid symbol

That feel after you've installed Gentoo it is literally just like all the other distros.

>1. Acquire gentoo iso
>2. Install gentoo

Sometimes it will just start removing automatically, like this time.

Also, checked.

Stop using Devuan, it's shit, go back to debian. Also xfce is gay and bloat. Use i3 or dwm

>not caring

==> ERROR: Running makepkg as root is not allowed as it can cause permanent,
catastrophic damage to your system.

I can't

Post gentoo desktop, also how many hours did it take you to install it?

...

It just works on my systemd-free laptop running Gentoo. Devuan still has problems as they use debian packages which often depend on systemd.

Wouldn't go well on my Atom N550.
>Stop using Devuan, it's shit, go back to debian. Also xfce is gay and bloat. Use i3 or dwm
I'm actually using i3 with lxpanel, I just don't have any alternatives for the power manager. Xfce is actually on par with i3 on terms of bloat.

>Devuan still has problems as they use debian packages which often depend on systemd.
Shit, what distro should I use on my Toaster Atom N550 laptop then? Artix?

That's not the feal I got. I switched all my systems to Gentoo because of the amazing power of USE flags.

oh yeah they even got rid of the --as-root switch for makepkg. not sure what the problem is then, never had a problem using makepkg before. maybe it's that specific PKGBUILD? have you read it?

3 hours. I didn't install a desktop environment

...

what did you expect?
>literally just like all the other distros
that's literally wrong though, you're unique USE flags define your unique system
also, do you have portage + openrc on other distros?
I think not

You can try checking apts log to see what it removed, I don't know where it is specifically but look in /var/log.

does anyone have some cringe Arch desktops?

Why arch specifically?

reddit.com/r/unixporn/

Great! Thank you.

Would acpi -V work?

Arch doesn't have a desktop.

Are you using it as a server?
