Small handguns are easy to get illegally, and large weapons such as shotguns, rifles, stupidly large revolvers and anti material rifles are easy to get legally. Explosives are impossible to get though

You can get a shotgun for hunting or a 22 rifles for shooting practice. Everything else is illegal unless you have a special carry permit but not really rare since the east south euro flooded us wiith ex-soviet era kalaschnikov

Depends on what you're planning to do.

The viable ways for civilians are hunting and sports shooting. For both you need a basic gun handling qualification which you get after a background check, some classes and an exam (and a psychological examination if you're over 18 but under 25).

For hunting you also need to get a seperate hunting license after some classes and an exam. Then you can buy a number of rifles and shotguns, it's like half a dozen or so, for more than that you need special approval.

For sports shooting you need to be an active member of a shooting club and log in so and so many practice hours and like one competition entry a year or so, I can't remember the exact numbers. Then you can buy a number of handguns and shotguns in the calibers you're actively shooting with, once again you need special approval for more.

Seperate licenses that include carrying exist for a whitelist of professions like security guards and security transports, and you can apply for a carrying license if you have a valid fear for your life, but usually these aren't approved unless you're a person of national fame and interest.

However you can lose your gun handling license even for gun-unrelated crimes and even for non-violent crimes if they're severe enough to indicate that you're not a dependable law abiding individual.

Also all legally posessed guns are listed in a federal registry so you can't legally buy or sell guns with no one knowing (not that it works, estimates say 80% of the guns in Germany are illegally owned and unlisted).
