I'm from a Buddhist background but visit a shrine on new years day or when I find ones when I'm on a trip.

I'm planning my trip to Japan, but I got so many things to do... but I think the most important of all, I don't think my japanese is on the level to handle basic daily conversations, I can read mangos/novels with relative ease (still need the dictionary from times to times, mostly kanji), but I have 0 talking experience.
Is there anything in specific that I can do to improve this to get my japanese to a regular bakagaijin tourist level?
