I remember around christmastime we used to have threads like these where we'd discuss languages and learning them and stuff, so why not try this kind of stuff again?
discuss languages, language learning, your techniques, conlangs, etc. also post resources
circlejerk in something other than toki pona edition.
because my bant and memes anyone have tips on accent learning?
Nicholas Howard
listen to the accent a lot, then imitate it. also look up its inventory of sounds so you know exactly what the sounds of it are.
Blake Moore
yeah I trying the memic method and shit, but the ecuadorian and colombian accent is hard since I have a deep voice.
Liam Sanchez
...
Alexander Rodriguez
Anybody know a good language to start off on instead of French, Spanish or Italian?
Joshua Flores

Portuguese.
Michael Cox
What kind of languages interest you?
Julian Walker
Sure I'll try learning that
Blake Morales
what did he mean by this
David Garcia
you uncultured fuck
Ryan Cruz
Kek. Why Portuguese? Only really good in countries you wouldn't want to visit.
Dominic Wood
Tier 1 language just like Spanish, French and Italian. Good for a 1st time learner and gives the bases of the romance family.
Jonathan Johnson
Eh, I guess. Grammar difficulty is about the same, but pronunciation is a lot harder for an anglo, so it should be fun.
Caleb Cooper
Norwegian is the best Nordic language to learn, and it's extremely simple as well.
Swedish/Danish/etc. are okay too but Norwegian lets you understand more of the other languages than vice versa. You want to learn the Bokmal variant.
Or you could just learn to speak to Jorge like me.
Benjamin Kelly
Seriously what flag is this?
Luis Brooks
Where are the latin languages?
Jeremiah Hall
It's from Kramned
Luke Richardson
norwegian is literally a dialect of danish, and on top of that only 4 million people worldwide speak it learn danish in stead
Adrian Long
In the google drive?
Indo-European -> italic
Isaiah Moore
In Latinia, obviously. :P
Ryder Gutierrez
>brazilian education are you retarded
Chase Rogers
I only see the germanic
Jordan Clark
or you could just learn swedish and avoid sounding like a peasant
Connor Jones
try reloading it, or logging in and out of your google account (if you're logged into one).
Ian Sanders
Fuck off retarded burger
Lucas Rodriguez
Thanks
Henry Perez
I wouldn't recommend Arabic to a newcomer
Colton Green
hello again sorry i was using our state flag, but aside from that chicano in miami i was the only floridian user with extra flags so i figured it was cool
Logan Williams
I'm probably at most 30 minutes from you right now, was at Tom+Chee the other night
Blake Robinson
I'll learn these languages (German, French and Swedish), what do you think?
Hunter Miller
No French, Swedish is okay, German is complicated
Lucas Robinson
Never been in a /lang/ before, so I'm not sure if this is the kind of question asked here.
For those of you who've learned other languages with arbitrary genders (different from your own). Which ones weird you out the most?
I always found it weird that in Spanish "milk" is female, although it sort of makes sense, I guess. German also has the famous neutral word for girl instead of the feminine.
Nathan Mitchell
Why no french?
Benjamin Nelson
Have fun speaking breadroll
Benjamin Sanders
>north of university pkwy >doing anything
Jaxon Thomas
Hey guys, what do you thing about how Ossetian language sounds? I need some westerner's opinion about my native shit.
Here is some video with two random guys speaking in various dialects of it: youtu.be/NxUf7kxOR44
Brayden Evans
svenska är bäst
Asher Thomas
How did you learn Svenska?
Thomas Moore
The ones that always surprised my from my own language: >Polla (cock) femenine >Coño (cunt) masculine
Easton Johnson
Heh, caralho, pénis (male) and verga, pila (female) all mean dick.
Pénis and Vagina are correctly gendered, though.
It's extra arbitrary because half of them are euphemisms that stuck.
Wyatt Gutierrez
I don't know what that is and when I look it up it gives nothing.
Joshua Wright
Since I actually made you look, I'll just explain it.
It was a very poor attempt at a joke trying to spell "Denmark" backwards, because the flag in question is the opposite colours of it.
Also, it's the England (not UK) flag.
Jayden Peterson
The English flag isn't off center like the Scandinavian flags though?
Jeremiah Kelly
Finnish.
It would be easier to jam bamboo shoots under my fingernails every day tbqh.
Kayden Ortiz
Fair point, Acir Atsoc. It's just a mistake though, look where it's located in the OP. They are somewhat grouped.
Samuel Ross
Someone should start a thread where people send vocaroos of languages they've learnt and accents they can put on
Benjamin Bell
so, OP has: american canadian american and canadian english british >what is my life
Jack Long
>american and canadian that's the union jack.
I dunno, it has Portuguese, Brazilian and Portuguese/Brazilian.
I don't know what it's about.
Logan Stewart
OP here, I just used some random pic from the archive.
Juan Howard
It's probably an icon set for web-design. They have the hybrid flags to leave the devs the choice depending on how thorough they are with the selection.
Isaiah Miller
I'm downn
Sebastian Lewis

Cooper Gutierrez
I do want to keep /lang/ going but they always tend do die really quickly. On topic though I want to learn a language but I can't think of one. I like Japanese but it's pretty hard. Ideally it'd be one that I use a decent amount but Australia isn't really close to any non-Anglo countries
Lucas Rivera
Malay is often ranked one of the easiest languages to learn.
Robert Long
You could learn a new germanic language
Noah Martin
...
Nathan Johnson
no.
Dominic Jones
Thai is both easy and close.
Anthony Moore
>Norwegian is the best Nordic language to learn literally not true it's clearly Icelandic
Gabriel Taylor
You could learn Vietnamese. It already uses Latin letters (pronounced in a French manner?). The downsides are that tones can be tricky and it's relatively irrelevant and therefore there are less good resources to help you learn (but I suppose that goes with any non-major language).
t. vietnamese diaspora
Evan Gutierrez
learn Icelandic you know you want to for WE WUZ VIKANGZ AND SHIT
Leo Rodriguez
hey ching chong man why is literally every single viatnemese person named nguyen?
Blake Phillips
to hide from an oppressive government. Nguyen=Spartacus
Jaxson Cook
I've studied Southern Vietnamese for a while. The tones are extremely difficult to get down because the speakers are not used to foreign accents at all. Each word has 6 different meanings depending on the tone. Grammar is very simple though.
Nathan Reyes
I grew up semi bilingual with Spanish and English, but broke contact with my Spanish speaking parent at age 16, and my ability to speak the language deteriorated before I had the chance to really master it.
I want to become fluent in Spanish. Where should I start?
Ian Adams
Mexico
Henry Reyes
Gross
James Phillips
It's easy to spout out some basic stuff but you'll never be able to speak like us.
Austin Reyes
Duolingo, Memrise. Honestly it jumpstarts a lot of old memories.
Also try Clozemaster.
Charles Anderson
Spain if you are after REAL NIGGA HOURS
Ethan Ortiz
My bitch mother is Colombian and I don't know much about dialects, but I sound very distinctly Colombian when I speak
Adrian Murphy
Go to Colombia then You'll have REAL COKE HOURS there
Cameron Mitchell
Didn't say he could, he was just asking for geographically close languages, and yours is a lot less fucked than any other nearby.
>Tongan is pretty ebin too. >also desu I don't speak Thai at all, have just studied it's structure at university; linguistics student here.
I thought they sold/distributed but didn't actually do it.
Bentley Price
the locals do it legally, because of tribal laws. Everyone else does it because they aren't going to live past 30.
Nolan Hall
...
Brayden Gomez
Wouldn't Indonesian be easier
Owen Gonzalez
yea i mean what's up not every finn is raikkonen or german hitler so why are 40% of viatnemese with the same surname?
Dominic Stewart
How do you know so much about Colombia?
Grayson Turner
it's not as nice to learn, but I guess arguably more usable; depends where you plan on traveling I guess.
I literally don't, I've just watched a few documentaries. I remember one band who made their guitars out of deactivated AK-47's.
Jaxon Hill
>Ossetian
Mountainniggers are not welcome, get the fuck back to your cave, vermin.
Oliver Lee
>Each word has 6 different meanings depending on the tone Technically speaking, having a different tone makes it a different word. They're not treated as the same word. e.g. đào = peach, dao = knife, đạo = religion, đảo = island But I get what you mean. The Latin letters plays tricks on how you interpret the language when you're a native English speaker. It's easy to forget the Chinese-like roots of Vietnamese.
Beats me. May have something to do with the fact that the Nguyen dynasty was the last one in Vietnam before the French came around.
Julian Taylor
i don't really speak svenska, only a few words and basic converational stuff. i'm learning though (also, it's technically "svenska," not "Svenska"—you don't capitalize language names in Swedish as you do English) でも日本語知っています
Tyler Parker
>you don't capitalize language names in Swedish as you do English Why?
Alexander Gomez
just a convention. why do you in english? it's arbitrary. languages, nationalities, and months aren't be capitalized
Nathan Hughes
Should I trust translated videogames as a reliable resource?
Jeremiah Morris
*aren't capitalized typed "shouldn't be" then tried to correct it and failed, kek
Levi Carter
I'm used to capitalize languages, nationalities, and months in portuguese
Hunter Perez
me too, and in English. but in Swedish you don't. that's all.
Sebastian Davis
Actually not, here is an example
Cua: crab Cúa: no meaning Cùa: no meaning Của: of Cũa: no meaning Cụa: no meaning
Cooper Parker
Hi where are my fellow 廣東話 learners?
Austin Fisher
>Cúa: no meaning >Cùa: no meaning >Cũa: no meaning >Cụa: no meaning Maybe you should make some.
that's a really good textbook series. I own the books but haven't gotten around to reading them yet, though I skimmed through and they seem pretty good. You could probably find it for free somewhere as well
