Ready for a pointless war where thousands of young Russian men and hundreds of thousands of afghans die and spiral the country into utter chaos still seen nearly 40 years later?

Well, it's been six years since we've entered the EU, and it's looking pretty good so far!

Fucking Iran

WE ARE GROWING STRONGER

Yeeeeeeey i'm prime minister

I was 13 back then and Debby Harry was my first fap. Thanks for the memories, user.

Anyone gotten a chance to see Alien yet? It seems like it'll be good.

Another 'coup' of coffee pls

The 80s won't be a promising decade, I tell you that. Economy is gonna be shit forever, the automobile industry is done for, and communism is just getting stronger. We'll probably all be speaking Russian or in a labor camp by 1995.

Been working on a BASIC port of that old Star Trek game we used to play on the DECs in college.

goddamn you must be old as fuck

Funny I actually thought that about Debby Harry back then. "Wow, she's like 33. Goddamn, that's like a freakin' grandma."

What is this song Promises and what is it doing on my radio? Fuck you Eric Crapton.

Have guys seen what happened to Persia? boy i sure am glad that will never happen to a secular place like turkey

They took our...fucking ambassadors. This is all your fault, Jimmuh Cottah.

I paid $100 to see Aerosmith last night. Worst show ever. They were high out of their minds and only played like 10 minutes. Fuck, I used to actually think that band was awesome.

Gibe money pl0x.

Fuck, Dylan went all Jesus on us.

man, Carter was a pretty bad president. good thing it cant possibly get any worse

There's an 18 year old kid at Occidental College who'll see to that.

Last year of the 70s or first year of the 80s?

1981 was the first year of the 80s and 1980 the last year of the 70s. The 80s didn't really get going until Reagan...in 1980, people still had the prevailing 70s malaise mindset.

Well yeah but I mean, 78-79 were definitely different from the earlier part of the decade. Hippies, Vietnam, and protest malarkey were ancient history by the time Carter was president. The music was different too. Nobody was listening to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, or Grand Funk Railroad in 1979 and those bands were totally uncool and passe by then. Everything was disco and New Wave.

So really, the main part of the 70s from a cultural standpoint was 1971-76.

The fashions were changing as well; you could see hints of the 80s preppy look appearing by the last year or so of the 70s and cars were getting smaller and more angular as opposed to the 70s land yachts.

I think we should support this new progressive leader in Irak, Saddam Hussein. He seems like our guy and is the only way to stop the Russians expanding through Iran. Lets' just send them all the weapons they need there.

Also, what kind of weak ass prime minister did the UK just elect? A woman? Have fun beining mainpulated and thrown around by foreign powers, Brit cucks.

I think by 1979, the 70s atmosphere was about over and you could see a lot of 80s previews like metal, punk, New Wave, and the beginnings of hip-hop (Rapper's Delight came out in 79). It was kind of transitional early 80s. The hippified 70s fashions (bell bottoms, flower prints, long hair) were gone and you could as you said see evidence of the preppy 80s look show up.

See here. You can see especially their haircuts some evidence of the 80s look creeping in. Their pants also aren't flared and there is no longer any trace of the hippie look.

Fun times ahead in the 'limited foreign operation'.

the girls in the picture wouldn't be THAT out of style in the early 2000's, it revived pretty fast

Honestly don't trust the Japs lads, 35 years ago they were bombing our cities and today they're buying all our land, our mines and monopolising the technology industry. Think we should put a stop to it before they begin aggressive expansion and we become too reliant upon them to stop it

If you're talking 100% "Bell bottoms/protests/Led Zeppelin/Afros" 70s, then 1975 was the last year for that. Even by 1976, there were a few very faint hints at the 80s like the Ramones and personal computers starting to appear.

Although in general, the "late 70s into early 80s" transitional period was 1978-91 and maybe '82 as well.

1976 and '77 feel like their own time IMO. Not quite "80-ish", but also slightly past the peak of the 1974-ish 70's.

The Berlin Wall will be expanded to the point where you can see it from Skylab.

So you saying 1980 was the last year of the 70s in the sense that 2000 was also really the end of the 90s.

By the Carter years, the Farrah feather cut was all the rage and it's much more of a preview of the 80s "giant bird's nest" hairstyles than the hippified Marcia Brady look. By 79 Van Halen and AC/DC broke out huge and of course they sounded completely unlike Blue Oyster Cult or other early 70s bands.

Hell yeah, this looks very 80s. All preppy, all starting to sport mullets, no bell bottoms or flower prints anywhere.

Do u like my garden lads?

The music that was out in 79 has more continuity with 1980 and 81 than it does the rest of the 70s. While disco was still dominating the airwaves, two 80s rock giants, Van Halen and Judas Priest, were already becoming household names and punk was at its height. It wasn't until 79 that the classic funk-driven 70s music sounds were pretty much expunged. Also Michael Jackson released his first adult album that year.

Typical 70s music styles were running out of gas by '78 and new artists and sounds were quickly flooding in.

No because it was still the 70s. People had no idea what was to come.

I agree. Most of the pop culture stuff/music that appeared in mid-decade was still pretty relevant in 79 like Kiss, disco, Eagles, etc.

Yeah people forget that pop culture is not always just stuff from 1-2 years ago. Like I recall Eminem, Disturbed, A7X, and that shit still definitely being relevant in 2007-ish.

Depends. I don't for example remember Nelly or Pink being relevant in 2007 but Linkin Park definitely still were (What I've Done was a big hit).

But on the other hand, 1979-80 were still very un-80s in that Carter was president, the malaise "We're in a terminal state of decline" attitude was still omnipresent, the economy was shit, cars were still undrivable, smog-choked shitboxes, AIDS was not known yet, and personal computers were still in their infancy--there wasn't any IBM PC out yet or much of a software industry. Compact discs hadn't shown up yet and people were still spinning 45s and 8-track tapes. Everything was still a shade of brown or orange instead of the 80s pastel look. Music also didn't have watery synthesizers, snare reverb, women singing like chipmunks, and importantly, there was no MTV yet in 1979.

IMO 1977 was the quintessential year of the 70s. You had enough hints of the late 70s by that point (personal computers were becoming noticeable, disco was getting huge, Star Wars), but the general atmosphere was still full-on 70s, with bell bottom and flower print outfits still at their peak, prog bands still huge, funk reaching its peak (Commodores - Brick House was a top 10 hit that year), etc and even some early 70s stuff like Led Zeppelin being at least somewhat relevant.

New Wave's peak was in 1978-81 so I don't get why it's often lumped in as an "80s" thing. The New Wave out by 83-85 like Huey Lewis & The News and Duran Duran were much poppier and more radio friendly.

Boy these dystopian movies and books that are currently coming out are really fresh and I love how they show what the world could become in 30 years if we don't do anything
I heard David Lynch is starting to work on a movie based on this, pretty sure it won't ever be like he imagines it to be

Right. Early 80s New Wave like Huey Lewis or Katrina and the Waves feels definitely different than Devo circa 1979. It's got all the usual 80s cliches like watery synths and snare reverb while Devo were definitely more funk-driven and the overall message and image they had was more rooted in the 70s than the Reagan years.

1979 was the last year when it was cool to like any 60s artists like the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd. After that it was just like "Oh, you're dadrock. Reeeeee!!!!!"

Meanwhile in Czechoslovak Socialist Republic the new TV series "Sheet-metal cavalry" is all the rage.

No wonder! It's a thrilling story about nothing less than THE harvester brigade.

It's full of harvesters, harvesting with harvesters, wheat, some more harvesters harvesting, good commie chaps totally not ruining lives of others and few more harvesters on harvest. Spectacular show. Breathtaking plot. Oscar-winning acting.

It's been 34 years, yet I still feel empty inside.

Have you guys heard this British band? They're really fucking good. I heard they might do a US tour soon. I can't wait!
