When and why did the internet go wrong?

When and why did the internet go wrong?
It feels like there was a timeskip from 2011 - 2014, pre-2011 was alright, post-2014 was when shit hit the fan.
Was it smartphones and the ease of internet access that came with them?

I'd say that smartphones getting popular are a pretty good spot to draw the most recent line. Basically every time it becomes easier and more convenient to access and spend time on the quality of people takes a massive drop.

It depends on who you ask. For every answer you get saying this or that group ruined the Internet, there's another group of elitists who came before that say the same thing about them.

...

The downfall happened mid 2013 from my perspective,

The internets become over saturated which usually leads to a lower quality of anything for that matter.

I remember when I had my S2 and the internet wasn't fully optimized for smartphones.

The browser would either freeze like crazy or I had to rely heavily on the scroll button since everything was displayed via desktop lol

2008 was still good but it started to feel wrong. By 2010 the nu-internet era began though that feeling has grown at an exponential rate.

...

Smartphones were the decline of civilization in general. They should be banned outright if we want any chance to save ourselves.

I don't own one, have never owned one, and will never own one and I live a fairly normal life with a computing job (no, not LOLGEEKSQUAD, fuck that). I come from an era back before you kids were born that never needed that mobile garbage.

Kids that don't know the internet went to shit after September 1993

it went to shit in th summer of 1992

Well, usenet did. The WWW didn't go to shit until it went super-corporate in the late 90s/early 2000s.

For me it was around 2010. That's when, practically overnight, everyone's aunts and grandmothers suddenly appeared on Facebook.

the internet was always shit
life was always shit
everything was and always will be shit

2007 was the last good year (bad things started happening in 2007 but overall it was the last year with anything good)

steve jobs
that's when it went wrong

Came here to post this. September never ends.

This. Usenet grognards talked about the death of the Internet in 1993 (Eternal September) when AOL users flooded usenet with shitposting

Forgot I was 4cuck

>HURRRR DURRR YOU'RE A ILAG KEK HURRR LE REDDIT SPACING

about 2007
vista bloat, facebook big brother, cell phone brain sucker
maybe reality TV too

same here. smartphones are so weak compared to what desktops, or even laptops can do. no settings, spoonfed/highly-controlled contents, and ever-constant surveillance because everyone's a potential terrist

2007 2007 2007 2007 2007 2007 2007

>When and why did the internet go wrong?

When websites started to become bloated with javascript and screen-blocking ads became commonplace.

>Implying that avoiding mass surveillance on desktops doesn't require extreme autism and can't be avoided on both platforms

social media killed the internet
>facebook
>youtube
>twitter
>tumblr
the internet is not the internet anymore its tv with channels

Spot on analogy.

porn websites and anonymous forums like Sup Forums are the last gasp of the old internet
the web is getting smaller man

honestly i think the "good" internet is still here in tiny pockets. it's defintely not anywhere near facebook... in fact if you see any of those little social media buttons around you're participating in the cancer.

everyone looks on the past with rose colored glasses. The internet was shit since it's inception, humanity has been shit since our inception

The internet has successively gotten "worse" as the quality of internet connections and overall availability increase. Some things get better, of course, but the IQ of the average person on the internet decreases each year, and this is what causes the decline in quality.

Several people have written about this phenomenon, but most of them believe it's a single event. Endless September is a good example of this, but you can find various other cases where a massive influx of new, dumber individuals outnumbering the previous community cause a deterioration in the quality of content on individual websites or the entire web. Sup Forums is hardly excluded.

The good news is that we're at the end of the road. Right now, almost everyone on the planet has an internet connection. There won't be any more massive waves of new people, they're already here.

>This
Now we just need ever more inaccessible and autistic strongholds to keep out the normies.

Those places already exist, but people are smart enough not to proliferate information about them this time.

can confirm
only reason i browse Sup Forums is because it has more traffic than other places

how old were you those years? want to test a theory.

Your theory is that everything seems better when you're a child, and you're absolutely right.
It doesn't really change the fact that some things objectively went to shit.

There is nothing wrong with phones. What is wrong is social media enabling every single matter to be made available for public shaming.
