Why do smartphones bother with 6, 8...

Why do smartphones bother with 6, 8, or 10 little ARM cores instead of making 2 or 4 big ARM core processors the same size as the 8 or 10 core ones with much better single thread performance?

Wouldn't the improved single thread performance also improve battery life thanks to the struggle of programming for many cores, the phone needing to hotplug more cores to complete the task, and race to idle?

Wouldn't it also be easier to manufacture as having less cores also makes it less complex?

I'm no engineer though, could someone with more knowledge please explain this to me? Is it more than just marketing?

The higher the clock rate, the more energy lost as heat, hence, the quicker the battery will die.
Transistors are so small that cores only take up a small area on the die, so adding them isn't a problem.
Most of the complexity is handled by machines once the initial design is already done. ARM have already done the designs and then they just license it on to companies that do the fabrication.

Clock rate doesn't have to be higher, more transistors = more performance?

Look at Ryzen VS Bulldozer for example. Bulldozer had smaller cores in CMT clusters while Ryzen has larger cores with SMT.
I know it's very different because desktop vs mobile, x86 vs ARM, etc, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Bruh, EVERY modern mobile CPU utilizes big.LITTLE, there are high performance cores for heavy tasks and power efficient cores for the rest.

Snapdragon 820 = 2 big + 2 little
Snapdragon 835 = 4 big + 4 little
Why not instead of doubling the number of cores, improve the performance per core more. The single core performance increase of the 835 is abysmal in my opinion. It's half of what we got when we went from SD810 to 820.

I've even seen my Snapdragon 820(not 821) go over 2000 single core performance which means that it's matching what the 835 is supposed to be getting...

I would rather use an iPhone because the performance will be better than Android because it's a native UNIX OS, not a laggy Java VM

instead of having dual cores why don't we just have 1 core that's 10000% faster?

Damn, Black girls look like THAT?

Because multitasking.

But even then wouldn't you prefer 4 cores that are faster instead of 8 weaker cores?

Think back to fx8350 vs it 2500k, or now to r7 1800x vs i7 8700k.

Some do, yes. Expand your porn horizons, bro.

Jesus Christ what a hideous creature

thinking about fucking a whore thats supposed to look like that

Are you talking about the 10 core phone processor?

Name?

Whites: Look like shit as bimbo, look hot in the 30s
Niggers: Look hot in the 20s, look disgusting in the 30s
Gooks: Look like jailbaits in the 20s, look okay in the 30s, look middle aged in the 60s

Explain this

Whites not pedophiles. Here you go, a scientific proof.

What he said had nothing to do with pedophiles or white people, you pedophile.

>Whites don't like jailbaits
Obvious assumption.

Big words and numbers sell better,
Also post nigs.

yeah but they need to do tons of shit to get their hair like that

a good black girl is absolutely top tier... miss mine

>10 cores
There's no kill like Overkill.

Who cares lol

Specifics aside, the correct answer to "why don't CPU designers do X to increase performance" is usually "if X was possible or useful they would have done it already".

In your case, the problem is that you think making cores "big" will somehow make them faster.
If there was a way to "scale up" a core and have it be faster, CPU manufacturers would already have done that. There isn't.
Making cores faster is dependent mainly on frequency (which is already as high as it'll ever get) and process size (i.e. how small and tightly packed the CPU die is).

And no, better single thread perf will not improve battery life. Hotplugging is nowhere near as power-intensive as you think it is.

Daily reminder that both android and ios are shit.
Debian arm can run on a single core potato just fine.

Imagine if Android was spun off from tiny core Linux.

>Why do smartphones bother with 6, 8, or 10 little ARM cores instead of making 2 or 4 big ARM core processors the same size as the 8 or 10 core ones with much better single thread performance?
Power consumption

>Wouldn't the improved single thread performance also improve battery life
No

more cores = better multitasking

yeah, you do that

Don't listen to this faggot. Please post more qt negro girls.

Dumb niggerposter

"Sure"

Very few of them unfortunately. Most are borderline baboons.

>struggle of programming for many cores
You litteraly have to add ONE OpenMP instruction to your program

>Those milkies

People still struggle with that.

The wonders of arches not x86.
Not all cores in an arm processor are created equal. Especially not on phones.
Some are weaker and used when the phone doesn't need the extra processing power. The stronger cores kick in in need.
The problem you propose has been solved years and years ago.

Really though

Expensive though
