Must have some value. Chinks have been signing into my abandoned account left and right in the last few months.

A festering shithole for autismal kids. I don't play games so I have no reason to use it.

>us

Are you a Discord dev Pajeet?

What the fuck is discord anyway? I have been seeing it in some posts, but nobody tells what it is

skype for gaymurs

I like it better than TeamSpeak

bretty gud

>Electron
fuck it

It's good with large groups. I barely use it for vidya. Sending an image over Skype saves it (or at least its thumbnail) in all participants' computers, and the alternative is to upload everything before sharing a link. That's shit. Discord uploads everything by default. Voice calls on Skype are shit and they rarely work with large groups. Discord's server-hosted voice chat are convenient for dropping in and out. The search feature is pretty nifty, too.
It misses two features in my opinion: quotes and proper integration of RTL text.

botnet

It's nice compared to Skype, but the fact that its entire backend is on Google means
1. Botnet
2. It going down from time to time
3. See 1
It won't get normies to switch from Skype, but it's still far superior.

A messaging utility for users that doubles as a voluntary user wiretap and user data profit generator for its developers.

It's a good service, but has bad user data and privacy practices. Unfortunately there are not any great alternatives, everyone I know ditched IRC for Discord and for good reason.

Being better than Skype is a hilariously low bar to pass, unless it got a hell of a lot better over the past ~8 years. Which I doubt.

May the anime trap porn I watch bring them many fortunes.

>botnet as argument
>skype is somehow okay
Subtle Microsoft shill

For simple person-to-person calls, it's actually pretty decent on Botnet 10. I heard it got a new UI but I'm not touching it after what happened with those malware ads.

best example of web 3.0, ahead of its age

Never said it was okay. Are you having trouble joining the group Skype call? :^)

Doesn't provide anything over Mumble, Vent or Teamspeak

eh, just using it because i gotta and it would be way too autistic to force team members to log on to my own server or some other gay shit like that.
don't care either way 2bh, will uninstall when i'm done with it.

>Facebook nag prominently showing affiliation with Facebook
Don't use it for sensitive communications, that much is clear.

IRC desperately needs proper account and chathistory support

Quotes can be done with ```quote```. The output will be "quote" in a bubble

>the fact that its entire backend is on Google means
This means nothing for your privacy, why would it be better if they stored data on their own privately run servers? In fact, it's probably more likely there will be an intrusion on to some random companies servers than ones administrated by Google. You should care about whether or not there is end to end encryption, who has access to the data, how the data is protected from attackers, how much data is stored and for how long, etc.

destroyer of friendships
ruiner of communities
breeder of drama

it fucking sucks

>Doesn't provide anything over Mumble, Vent or Teamspeak
Try making the most basic effort to google "Discord feature list" maybe? Why did you bother posting this.

>a protocol needs to support things completely unrelated to it
This is the job of IRC clients and networks, and is also a solved problem. Every modern IRC client supports chat history and nameserv is more or less ubiquitous. If you want a global account then you want something that is antithetical to the concept of IRC. Do you expect a global account for all HTTP services?

And no disclosing your IP address to anyone who tries, dcc or no dcc

It has a server about vore and dragons and voring dragons

>Every modern IRC client supports chat history
nothing supports server-side chathistory
>nameserv
it's nickserv, and it's garbage

I never understood what it is about Discord that makes it nearly Twitch-tier cancer if not actively locked down.

I don't see why such thing should be included in the protocol. If a server wants to implement such features, then let them do it.

The """features""" list is all junk I don't need in a voip program. Plus a lot requires bots. Why bother with all that junk when other programs provide without the hassle?

actually, no server can implement infinite scrollback chathistory because it would require changes to the protocol
ircv3 is trying to fix everything but right now there's no fucking way irc can compete with something like discord

Got any to share? Give me your best stuff.

Discord is really awful the only reason I use it is because I have friends there that I wouldn't be able to communicate with outside of that app or website or program or whatever you want to call it.

>Mumble
My nigga, it's barebone but the sound quality and latency is leet. 1.3 when?

That's for code. It's arbitrary text. I want something similar to Skype's quotes where text is copied with no changes, and it mentions the author and has a timestamp.

in their privacy policy written they are collecting your data and sell it lmao
how can anyone use it

trash
shit chat architecture
voip is also quite shitty
bloated html implemetation
only users are gaymers and turbonormies who never thought of something better than skype

It fine if you're not a pedo weeb criminal with something to hide

It's simple. You type in "hop on our teamspeak, here's the link and password", two people hop on, two say "it doesn't work" you send them a link for how to configure their router and forward the port, two go to download teamspeak. The two who hopped on are stuck in the lobby and there's no one with permission to move them, one person successfully installs teamspeak, the other says it caused his computer to crash, the two who say it still doesn't work. Twenty minutes later you go with just 3 of them in the teamspeak.

You type in "join this discord: [url here]." Four people hop on, one says "what am I supposed to do with this" you say "just put it in your browser", another says "it doesn't work." Five minutes later the first guy hops on and the other guy hops on and says "I just opened it on my phone." Two of them say "I'm in, but our voice won't work." You say "that's ok, as long as you can hear us."

>it doesn't work
>forwarding ports for teamspeak
>crash
>doesn't work
have you even used teamspeak before?

spyware.neocities.org/articles/discord.html

Messenger For Desktop, but more bloated.

You go to Mumble, tell people to join a random empty server, works for everyone. People spend 5 minutes configuring their headphones and removing text-to-speech.

Unfortunately.

And why would you think that no one would ever have to forward ports for teamspeak? It's not like it uses port 8000 or 80 or something. Some people have overzealous router settings.

discord is run by the most unbearable nu-developers on earth

I'm guessing you don't do a lot of random/open match gaming, often involving people who have never hopped on a voice chat before, and instead stick to a small group of people who already have a lot of experience setting up voice chats and speaking to each other.

My experiences with Mumble were not even remotely the same.

It does everything I need it to do

>My experiences with Mumble were not even remotely the same
people who have difficulties with simple software like mumble should not waste their time gaming
they should use that time to educate themselves

What? Mumble is identical to Teamspeak except it already lists servers you can join and most don't need a password. If you're retarded enough not to understand how to connect to it then I doubt you know how to connect to online games.

the "underground" for normies

IRC and discord aren't competitors.
IRC is the backbone for twitch and several huge online communities in wide range of subjects.

Discord will die when gamers move to the next big cool thing that gets pushed by their shitty industry

A data mining scheme, basically, disguised as a chat app for gaymurs.

Botnet as fuck, bloated as fuck, completely unnecessary and redundant.

slack for gamers

it werks

>proprietary software

>devs too stupid to learn anything besides javascript
>slow
>bloated
>literally a chrome window displaying a website
>proprietary
>botnet
>centralized

IRC if it was proprietary gaymur trash with VC.

btw if you write
```css
>[your text]```
it will be green text
It's a meme.
Install it. Start up the app. It'll literally display memes on the loading pop up.
Raid this server: discord.gg/neTsRUy
Too resource expensive . But all modern software has this problem in common. Why do I need HD icons in a fucking desktop application. Because of this my 8gb ram aren't enough anymore.
>inb4 get 16gb
It's pretty comfy. Ideally I would like no censorship and it to be truly free software, but it is what it is. I use it to talk to my friends every day, mostly not even for video game purposes.
get 16gb
>us
Hey, discord devs.
Your app is like a facebook for autistic gamers, including botnet features. It's OK, because it used to hide my ip from angry 13 years old, but loads slowly and consumes too much connection on mobile.
Piece of shit.
> hogs CPU during idle
> installed client can get stuck and you can never install, update or run it again. happened to me twice.
> sound quality is not that good, it's meh
> while everyone things it would improve a community, that just does not happen, Discord servers are just dead
its' shit.
>Discord servers are just dead
Sounds like someone hasn't been to /csg/'s Discord
I got my entire social group off of Skype and onto Discord, which is a vast improvement.
Use it on an everyday basis to communicate with muh friend(!s)
However, updates are hit or miss, and while wanted features may be added, some other things my get fucked up like the UI (latest one is shit)
>my get
may*
botnet
it's literally fine
In terms of features and usability, it isn't bad at all. Of course, that's not considering the sosh meed implementation and other bullshit. Regarding their privacy policy and data mining, these things should come as no surprise. This is a business model that has been around since the advent of Facebook - provide a free service and then finance it with the data they produce.
The problem is less with discord, really it should come as no surprise, and more with communities' wholesale adoption of it to the exclusion of all else. It's becoming unavoidable for a lot of people who desire to communicate with others online, and that's the larger problem.
I tried it and it maxed my CPU and used all the memory on my box
I wasn't even running it in Chrome
son, specific IRC channels for scrim in games for example were popular all along. so, of course it would work for something like that.
I simply meant guilds/clans where you would expect them to become more lively, engaging. But that never really happens.
Just use Matrix (with Riot.im if you're fond of web bloat UI) instead. It's federated and FOSS.
protip: the client is a lot fatter than the web version. unless you need the system-wide global voice hotkey (which most need), just use the web version.
desktop uses ~25% on my i7, web eats 0%. quality chinese software.
CIA spying tool
I was using firefox
A modern desktop communication application.
Bonus points for being free and easy to set up your own server.
Weird. Maybe V8 is better running it? I mean let's face it. It's a big pile of smelly javascript dogshit.
Good goy!
>free
Oh don't worry, my friend. You're paying for it. Not even going to meme about Jews. Nothing is free.
Maybe. Not the nicest UX either way, especially when Hexchat and Mumble add up to no load.
>discord
>your own server.
wat
botnet
well it's 170MB alone and not really native. it's either "Electron" or a borderless Chrome. I have opened the Chrome "Inspect tool" by accident few versions ago, so I reckon it's Chrome.
Electron is basically stripped down Chrome for when devs are too lazy to write a real program.
Garbage.
popup messages lik e'Uh Oh!! Links are spoopy!' makes me wonder who this is targeted for. 1 year olds?
Mumble:
+Comes bundled with a Fisher-Price™ theme specifically designed for newborns
-Harder to use, decreases accesibility for developmentally-challenged individuals
-No funny gifs; doesn’t feel like my Tumblr dashboard
Discord:
+Web 5.0-ready; ready to be absorbed into the Google-Facebook conglomerate within a minute’s notice
+No certificate-based security for authentication and communication means more accessibility!
+Bad
+Dehumanize yourself and become the botnet
+Is run by litteral and figurative faggots twitter.com/discordapp/status/897170310348263426
+Used by the cool people I watch on Twitch who play LoL
-Name is intimidating
Sounds good. Comes with Quake 3 preinstalled?
>>A festering shithole for autismal kids.
He asked about discord not Sup Forums.
This is unironically the worst part
Retard
it werks
Or maybe you're talking about the church of the subgenius?
>can either abandon my friends
>or deal with the botnet
Nice soy-tier "messenger" you got there without p2p file transfer support between clients kek
The most substantial and objective post in the thread at the moment.
