Bread with something on it is rarely the main dish here, I eat bread everyday and it's highly popular in every region but almost always as a side indeed. Either during the main course to wipe sauce, push meat on the fork etc or after to eat with cheese
I use dark bread sometimes for the main dish: Toasted dark bread with molten goat cheese on it + honey and spices

Belgian and Dutch bread is in every way inferior to german bread.

pretty much all german bread is made with sourdough and it's so much healthier and tastes a lot better than the dry shit you buy in dutch supermarkets and bakeries.

My grandmother made the best bread ever. It was traditional Eastern Finnish rye bread. Very sour, dense but soft and had a very strong flavour.
