Are robotic vacuums memetech or are they actually fairly good?

Meme. Completely useless. Stop being a lazy fatass and vacuum clean the floor yourself.

Useful if you don't like vacuuming. Dangerous because they improve vacuuming by mapping out your home and optimizing travel paths. This means a map of your house is being stored to a cloud server, unless you have one of the dumb first generation roombas that just wander aimlessly and aren't Internet connected.

They're godly if you have pets that shed fur. A coworker of mine is extremely pleased with those tiny things. He lets them clean the house while he and his wife are working. They don't clean certain regions, like some corners and the zone between an open door and the wall, but those can be cleaned rather quickly by hand. The robots take care of the bulk of the job and they do it well.

i mean, it could save a local map and use that. it doesnt have to be a cloud server.

There even some module on ros that makes possible for a robot to make and use map of the surroundings

Shill me good robot vacuums plz

Depends on your place, very dependant on floors and furniture placement, it's a godsend for me.
Older model roomba that cleans my apartment while I'm at work every day. Does a really good job too, I wash the floors every month or so though.

So what? If a spook or burglar wants to get your house plan they can just look through a window when no one is home or get the plans from the local council.

Works great for me, but do get the one in your pic or the successor model. Randomly driving shitty suction roombas don't do the job well enough.

The one from the OP was the cheapest one with mapping and path finding based on sensors last time I checked. Get that.

>Dangerous because they improve vacuuming by mapping out your home
This sounds like some Clapistan armed home defense fantasy.

No burglar will bother to get a floor plan from some server that isn't easy to determine (or access) to get floor plans.

>This means a map of your house is being stored to a cloud server
why can't it just map it out on its self?

The one in the OP can. IDK about all other vacuums. Maybe some of them offload the path finding or something to a cloud server.

That doesn't mean the Xiaomi vacuum isn't doing the whole smart-device-in-the-cloud stuff if you connect it to the internet. It's part of the sales pitch that you can control it from everywhere and show your friends your old cleaning logs and remote start the vacuum and what not.

I thought about buying them but then I wouldn't be able to throw shit on the floor anymore whenever I like.

Unless you are talking about shit so small that it'll get vacuumed, the robot vacuum will just drive around.

And you could just drop your small shit into a tray or box, tends to be wiser anyhow.

Apart from that, you can also designate zones off limits on many of the models that have non-random pathing.

wheres the massive bag dragging along the back with all my shit?

My dog would literally shit all over the house in fear if that thing was left running while I was gone. I wish I could get one

...

Your dog will probably easily get accustomed to this slow moving thing that almost can't injure anyone, even if it's noisy.

The main problem with a dog would be that in case he isn't fully trained to shit outside or in a basket, these machines will quite possibly drive over dog shit and smear it all over the place.

How are the ones that have a built in mop as well?

Obviously it's a meme, you don't need to vacuum so often that you need a vehicle driving round your house 24/7 constantly doing it.

I heard they were decent enough for some light dust and soil removal. Which arguably might easily be the situation in your house.

I don't recall any models that are good enough for more heavy cleaning ( definitely nothing to rival an airport scrubbing cleaning vehicle but on a smaller scale).

> that you need a vehicle driving round your house 24/7 constantly doing it
Wat. Who the fuck runs their robot vacuum 24/7?

This is literally meant to run on its own while you jerk off to porn vs you spending the same 10-20 minutes vacuuming the ground yourself (or hiring a costlier house keeper to do it, which additionally may require negotiations with regards to what time they come and if they can come another day extra after you had that party or whatever).

Was thinking of getting one as most of my house is hardwood floors.

Even on hardwood floors most of the cleaning against dirt can be done with a vacuum alone.

But sure, if you also want a quick mopping, yea, why not get a wet cleaning function, too. Definitely has diminished returns over the vacuum function, though.

How about I just not connect it to my network?

With the robot vacuums can you have a single one set up for multiple areas? So say upstairs and downstairs?

I had one bequeathed to me, its nice for my place since my living area is carpet and just one floor. It has the added bonus of scaring the shit out of my roommate's cat and keeping it from rolling around in my clothes and my bed. Also, as said before, its good at getting like 80% of the cat hair that accumulates everywhere. Sometimes it will go full retard-mode and get stuck under a table or something, but it always sorts itself out eventually

That works on the first generation Xiaomi, IDK about others.

That works on the Xiaomis, and I'd think it also works on most other vacuums.

I don't actually really have anything set up on my first generation Xiaomi, I just carry it upstairs and hit "go". It's using its LIDAR all the time anyhow.

Well then you should do what any sane Sup Forumsentoomen would do and run ROS on it. You could have a robot vacuum that you could be running gentoo on right now!
wiki.ros.org/Installation/Gentoo

Heck, you can probably download a FOSS ROS package that's ready to go for vacuuming your house. Oh and you could add better sensors, object recognition, a voice synthesizer, etc. You could have your own custom maid!

>tfw 2 storey house with plush pile carpet

I wish these would work on my carpet.

I have a Roomba since 2015 and since then have never touched a manual vacuum cleaner.

But they do work... surely not ideally (I'd guess the suction level on most isn't enough to get the heaviest particles up), but they'll grab a bunch of the dust and dirt anyhow.

The better robot vacuums do have pretty decent suction. Like some average household vacuum or something.

You end up having to spend more time cleaning the robot, after it has aimlessly driven around the room for hours, doing an absolutely abysmal job at cleaning while bumping and knocking over all your shit (if it doesn't get itself stuck in a cord before that), than it would have taken you to just get off your lazy ass and clean using your way cheaper conventional vacuum cleaner instead.

I have one. It's nice because it runs when I'm at work and picks up the little shit that would build up normally.
>hurdur 300 dollars for something that picks up a bit of dust
I spend over a third of my life working, there's no fucking way I'm going to manually clean up that shit. NEETfaggots need to kill themselves.

>You end up having to spend more time cleaning the robot
Takes ten seconds tops to take out the bin, empty it into a trash bag, and put it back.

> after it has aimlessly driven around the room for hours
Yea, don't buy a crappy model. That one from the OP is decent.

It'll do path finding and pass the accessible areas once, one area at the time. Second runs can be useful if you have a lot of dirt, beyond that there's probably no real benefit.

> while bumping and knocking over all your shit
It doesn't even strongly bump into larger objects that the LIDAR picks up, and even the smaller ones it naturally bumped against haven't been damaged here.

> than it would have taken you to just get off your lazy ass and clean using your way cheaper conventional vacuum cleaner instead
No chance. Works fine for me and grandma and more.

...

Suction isnt the problem. they can't move around on the carpet.

Of course it can.

Here's a random YT video with the memebot 1 getting on a carpet:
youtube.com/watch?v=5EJQeEiFLlQ

The thing can raise its wheels to get over obstacles.

Would be good for a kitchen I guess.

My Roomba Red still does me well...beware it will eat cables and stab you.

Nice for light duty work, and if you don't want to be bothered getting under the bed. But no replacement for a proper vacuuming.

>This means a map of your house is being stored to a cloud server

user did you know theres satellite images of your house that can already give a comparable gist of the layout of your house?

If you have a larger home, with no obstacles (Stairs, mats, doorways etc.) it's alright. Even then, you still need to empty out the robot and do other cleaning, so the benefit is pretty small. If you have a small or otherwise obstructed home it's useless.

Not only that, but new homes generally have the floorplans available online from the builder. They're taken down after the development is fully sold, but nothing ever completely disappears from the internet.

Thinking about getting one for my mother for Christmas. Let's say my budget is ~$150. What are my options?

Double your budget and get the Xiaomi meme vac. It performs like a 900 dollar vacuum so it's worth

Are there particular benefits beyond cost for the Xiaomi's vs Roombas or other brands? Is there a definitive Sup Forums robovacume list I can consult, or will I actually have to use best judgment?

Well for one it's the only decent vacuum even remotely close to 150

Google it yourself, it's actually very good

Yeah I'm looking at it on Amazon, and the reviews seem positive enough...
But even still, it's almost $400, way off my mark. Maybe closer to Christmas it might drop down a little...

cat owners, are these good for picking up litter and dry food that they kick all over the place? i have carpet btw

It's a luxury product to save a little time, if you can't afford a good one just don't.

I had one in my 17th floor apartment and I.T drove right off the balcony. Either it malfunctioned or it wanted to escape vacuuming up my cheddar around my thighs and upper arms.

If you have a dog or cat it's quite handy.

It's not that I can't afford it, it's more that it's going out of my convenience zone. Yeah I can shell out the extra $250, but I'd rather not if it can be helped.

>I'm looking at it on Amazon
gearbest.com/robot-vacuum/pp_440546.html

Prime nigga. But thanks.

Do you need it in 2 days? Otherwise save yourself 60 bucks + no tax.

No, not necessarily, but I'm thinking I'll wait and see as Christmas nears and maybe the price drops. Then I'll need Prime.

aw shit.

I have hardwood floors and my robot does nearly all the cleaning.

camelcamelcamel.com/Xiaomi-Cleaner-Guidance-Powerful-Planning/product/B01MU4WAUI

Rule of thumb, prices typically go up the closer you get Xmas

Hmm. Ok, if worst comes to worst, I'll probably just find something else to get her. Save it for next time.

I've had one on tile floors. Keep in mind that this was a cheap brand which didnt seem to have optimized paths.
>It is NOT an adequate replacement for vaccuming - it merely means you'll have to vaccum less often
>Obviously, you still need to mop about as often.
>You can't leave shit like socks on the ground or it will trip up
>If you have an unusual layout, due to potted plants in corners, sliding doors with both a glass pane and a screen pane, with the innermost pane left open, strange table stands, etc. it may need some babysitting.

What's your time worth to you? If having your whole apartment vacuumed every day while you're at work or doing something you like is worth more to you that the few dollars/cents one costs when spread over it's lifetime, then go for it.
Have a non WiFi version cleaner that vacuums and mops.

It's really useful. I attach my electronic anklet to it so the police think I'm wandering around my house and I go out to rob people.
Posting from the S8 I just stole.

Only those with SLAM are good ones. All others sweep blindly

I should add, visual SLAM.

I laughed
Have a (you)

I have the xiaomi vacuum it's has a laser on top that maps the room, navigates around tables and chairs fairly easily.
I put magnetic tape across some doorways to stop it from entering the room. The pic is a map of the rooms it cleans and the path it takes while cleaning.

Meme.
I had one for about two years and it was not worth the money.
Get a good vacuum instead, it is a much better investment.
If you already have one and want a robot for the hell of it, go for it.
Some of them have ROS support, so you can play with them and make a coverage planner for your place.
But I don't see it as a huge time saver.
You have to constantly empty the bin. Make sure nothing can be hurt by the robot etc.
But my problem with it was that it didn't clean that well.
If I invited someone over, I couldn't just grab the vacuum and make the place spotless in 10 minutes, the robot doesn't do that.

I bought ilife A4 about half a year ago.
Frankly, this is one of the best purchases I made in this year. I just fucking love it - makes my life a lot easier.
Totally worth it.

It takes like 10s until the container is emptied and back in the robot and I didn't even optimize where the closest garbage bin is situated.

Of course it'd be easier if it emptied itself and then also took the garbage bag to the disposal container outside but its already super simple and quick as-is.

Maybe you could vacuum the place in 10 minutes, but it can do dry cleaning in 30 minutes with you spending only 20s or so to empty the bin. The most basic planning ahead will do the trick.

If the suction wasn't enough to clean the usual dry household dirt and it had issues with destroying things then you probably bought a shittier model than the one in the OP. Never do that.

>wiping instead of vacuuming
>can't get over the edge of a living room carpet
Let me know when they sell one that looks like R2D2

> wiping instead of vacuuming
No, they vacuum. The brush is mostly to give it reach right to a wall with a more centered suction area.

>can't get over the edge of a living room carpet
Nonshit models easily can.
