Were the early/mid 2000s really that good, Sup Forums?

Were the early/mid 2000s really that good, Sup Forums?

Absolutely

Programs didn't have bloat
Gaming wasn't bland focus marketed generic formulas
The internet was mostly populated by enthusiastic intelligent nerds and not a normie free for all
There was still a lot of experimentation

newfag underageb&

Never really was on the internet in the early 2000s but judging by what's in that pic fuck no there is nothing appealing about the early 2000s.
The mid to late 90's I'd go back to.

keep your memes to yourself user. he is right

Yes, getting on internet required at least three digit IQ and computers so it was fairly niche, now every imbecile with phone/tablet thinks his opinion matters because they can connect to facebook.

nostalgic but current day isn't too bad

>be me
>6th grade 2008
>spend 6 hours a day playing Runescape
>got hack losing my 52,640 gp
>still play to this day

>mfw was a poorfag and didn't get a glimpse of the internet until 2008ish

i miss playing roller coaster tycoon and posting on flash game forums

I hope you're playing old school

nigga wtf MapleStory is like top 10 games of all time

>6th grade 2008
Fuck

I'm still pissed I didn't use my actual name when gmail came out.
Now I'm stuck with a long shitty username.

The Orange Box does not belong on that image, what the fuck kind of faggot made that. Try Quake 1 deathmatch with 150 ping minimum.

>getting on the internet required at least three digit IQ

wut

>be tech illiterate normalfag
>buy an iMac G3
>plug in cable
>now you’re surfin’!

The only people locked out were niggers.

CS 1.6 is also acceptable.

To the thread in general, the internet back then had its positives and drawbacks, much like today.

Information is much more available today, for example.

> 2000 + 0x11
> no HL3
> mfw HL2 still best gaym ever

Go away trent

>skip high school classes to play wow
>blink 182 playing in the background
>waiting in queue to download brand new naruto sub on irc
>chatting with your crush on aim for hours
>doing a survey on myspace your friend sent you

take me back

I wish everything wasn't literally designed around spying on me at every fucking turn. Getting a Gmail invite back in the day was a big thing now it's like why even get a Gmail account when all your doing is just making Google money.
Today's internet keep making me excuses to further disconnect myself from it.

Can't believe you forgot napster

It certainly has been commercialized but, then again, it was not going to go any other way. My thing is malware has gotten so much more insidious.

Back in the day, it was an annoyance. It was very obvious, almost immediately, when you got a virus. Now it's far more insidious and far harder to remove.

Can't leave out unreal tournament.
List too many hours to that game...

I would be remiss to not mention tribes. Also HL1 being an absolute master peice.

i miss people on irc but i don't miss using forums unless they were registrationless

>the internet back then had its positives and drawbacks
this

watching internet porn is more enjoyable now than back then, since you can watch that stuff on your phones

forreal that shit was BOPPIN'
still hit up the slime tree ost missing you every now and again.

that e x p e r i e n c e will never be had again :(

I played the everliving shit out of that game. Used to just run around in Ludibrium listening to the music.

Yeah. Kids don't know the pain of waiting for single pictures to load.

Hell, God forbid you want to watch a movie at 160p. I remember figuring out that if you stop the web page from loading after it initialized the mpeg container, you would load the video faster due to not waiting for the ads to download.

I don't care if internet services are commercialized it's just internet companies want to have there cake and eat it to.
Prime example is Microsoft you bought windows back in the day and didn't think anything of it, it was windows it's what everyone used. Now you buy Windows for the privilege of Microsoft data mining you.
It's not about providing a service and making some profit though some non-intrusive ads or paid services, it's now provide a service and sell your ass out in the process to the highest bidder making an ungodly amount of profit and hoarding it.

I let my sister use my oink account and she didn't seed and keep a 1.0 rating and I lost it.

Selfish bitch

>I remember figuring out that if you stop the web page from loading after it initialized the mpeg container, you would load the video faster due to not waiting for the ads to download.
that would've been good to know, even if it would be just for a 10 second preview video on MILF hunter

You do care if the services are treated like a service. It was inevitable. Merely having cookies made this so.

I personally view the internet as a public place anyways. I don't expect privacy, never have never will, because it never really existed. We have been tracked from day one. The tracking just evolved with the internet.

Simply the best

Did they have a one person per account rule like what most PTs have these days?

>playing tibia back in the day
>telephone rings
>internet shuts off
>die in game, loose 5 hours worth of gp and xp grinding

These kids who throw a fit over a small lagspike that ruins their twentieth kill streak of the day in CoD cant even compare.

lol I lucked out there.

People are always surprised to see my email is just [email protected]

The greatest game of all time came out in the 2000s (Super Paper Mario).

To think there was a time where games had no save function so you'd spend hours in a day trying to reach the end. And retry meant starting from the first level.
We're really spoilt these days

good job user, by characterizing yourself.

tfw kids these days consider that modern broadband era software old school

Shit I remember going to DSL and thinking that it was the absolute shit.

>he doesn't know how it feels overtaking popular irc channels on dial-up

>he never felt the upgrade, yes upgrade, to 56k modem

I am akin to a god compared to you, child.

>he knows how it feels running a 33k modem
hey buddy

>MapleStory
What is/was the appeal of this game?

It was kawaii

but we must not give up and evolve as well

>tfw sending ascii tits over a 103 baud modem when i was in the service

"giving up" is irrelevant. There is no giving up on something you never had.

I think kids think the web 1.0 was some kind of bastion of freedom from being tracked, pwned, and otherwise maligned; this is false.

The internet can and will evolve, and keep doing so, both positively and negatively. It is the nature of things.

RIP Oink
RIP WCD

>using gmail
don't do this

>playing runsecape on dial up
>can't use phone when connected to the internet (it just hits dial tone)
>taking forever to log in
>hear mum call someone on phone
>turns out the connection dropped
>phone call takes like 2 hours
>finally done
>recconnect
>user! That's costing us money everytime you connect! Turn it off!

Didn't use most of those
>MSN
Miranda IM for ICQ/AIM
>Lime, Oink
eDonkey
>Orange Box
CS, Alpha Centauri
>MapleStory
Ragnarok Online

>eDonkey
I am sincerely sorry, for I would not wish that existence upon any man.

>I think kids think the web 1.0 was some kind of bastion of freedom from being tracked, pwned, and otherwise maligned; this is false.
it was
you could do literally anything up until 2006 and never get caught

nostalgia goggles.

it sucked. the only good thing was it was all so new and unexplored.

I will always miss MSN Messenger, today chat services are so lackluster or just crap it hurts

Enjoy your shitty torrents with trackers that constantly die, Mr quads guy

Agree.

>The internet was mostly populated by enthusiastic intelligent nerds and not a normie free for all
Very true. From the people I knew at least 75-80% where on their way or working in something related to STEM. It was expected that you lurk, today more people want everything spoonfed to them and if somebody says RTFM they complain about a toxic environment.

I miss the troll kingdoms that were yahoo and aol chat and dont miss the faggotry that was webtv.

And you and your friends had lot's of time to sink into that grindfest. I think the first time I had a longish conversation with a girl was in that game when I was 13. She was Guyanese, whatever the hell that is.

overrated.
i think it was actually the worst period in time. you millennials keep distinguishing 'le early 2000s vs late' but theyre basically the same and i find it funny
it was precisely when internet became completely for normies. and people said gaming today sux since the 90s

No, I'm started using the Internet in 2003 and always was big shit with small island nice things.
But Megacorps and Government are turning everything even worse.

ed2k network was pretty good.
Better than all the Gnutella/FastTrack shit.
And early torrent stuff sucked too.

I remember the first torrent site I'd download from was a public one called TorrentSpy.

>plug in cable
>now you’re surfin’!
You're surfing all right, but it's mostly passive as there aren't many places making it easy for you to share your worthless opinions with the world. Having to configure a newsreader was an entry barrier that kept Usenet retard-free for a very long time, and the early web forums were pretty small communities concentrated around very particular topics that didn't tolerate idiots or shitposting either.

>normie
Fuck off normalfag

I used remarq.com from 97 till late 2000 for usenet. it was web based. god there was so much autism on there. I refuse to pay for it now, and my isp doesnt give me usenet so I leave it be. I know google has access to it, but its time has passed for me.

Damn I love that animated download window from IE. There is/was something really comfy about it.

>tfw you get bullied for using outlook express

>I refuse to pay for it now, and my isp doesnt give me usenet
WUT?
Good times.

spectrum doesnt give Usenet with service. time warner hadnt since 2006 at least.

hey, I still use Winamp

It's quite funny watching the nostalgia on this board shift from the late 80s to the early 90s to the late 90s to the early 2000s, and we are now even beginning to witness nostalgia for the late 2000s/2010.

To answer your question, no, each "era" of the internet was plagued with its own problems that were just as bad as each other. When you see all these "omg i miss le 2000s ;(" posts, you're just seeing people born in the 1995-1999 range gushing over their childhood. They are blinded by childhood nostalgia and refuse to/never saw (because they were children at the time) the flaws of the time.

in terms of internet, absolutely

however the economy absolutely sucked, and IPS didn't exist yet

>Be grade 9 in 2001

I wanna go back bros

Msn messenger was inferior to AIM.

AIM was inferior to ICQ.
Can't even show off with your low UIN in AIM.

Same here.

Battlefield 1942
UT2004
Halo on PC
Yahoo chatrooms before they got fucked
RuneScape before it got fucked
Ventrilo harassment
MSN group chats
MySpace
playlist.com before it got fucked
Kazaa
Limewire
Frostwire
Still good shit on TV
No fucking Facebook

Yes, it was better.

I'd say until the very end of 2006.
>all the cp on Sup Forums every fucking day

I had a low 7 digit ICQ number

no one I knew used ICQ except for a fat korean girl whose dad was a customer of my dads Garage, that was always after my little brother until he blasted her with a fire extinguisher after she said she was so hot for him. little bastard was a Arnold tier one liner.

...

Everything was better "then" since we've been plummeting downhill since WW1.

our sisters boyfriends mother said one time (imagine a really bumpkin ass redneck southern accent saying this) "boy, you can just hop on top of her and ride her like a mattress down a stairway", and "missy you know thar might be a couple of pretty girls under all that fat". she said this right in front of the girl too.

she wasn't bad looking once she did lose the weight and didn't have that horrible flat face with slitty AYYY LMAO looking eyes. she was just a fucking weirdo that dressed herself like a 8 year old special ED kid on the shortbus, and after my 15 year old brother. her sister was HOT but had such bad breath, it made me believe in dragons, because her mouth smelled like a baby dragon used it for a potty.

her dad was a fucking asshole cheapskate with no mechanical inclination whatsoever, that would try to work on a W126 series mercedes with a great neck brand standard socket set and a crescent wrench to try to avoid paying anyone else for shit you needed specialized tools and training for. he coldnt even change the oil on his own without leaving the old gasket on teh oil filter and having all his oil leak out of the engine, or nigger rigging something till it went tits up, and he was forced to bring it to my dad, who was the only mechanic around that was willing to work on his cars, since everyone else including the mexicans refused to deal with king korea. my brother and dad called them the bootleg version of japanese.

If you've ever seen those bootleg cartoons Korea made when they were still banning anime (like Space Thunder Kids) you'd have reached the same conclusion.
I don't know any Koreans but where I live they run all the donut shops. Is that normal in other parts of America?

its mostly convenience stores, Asian grocery stores, dry cleaners, cash businesses they can cheat taxes with.

my dad hates Koreans since his father was over there in the war, and was at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. shits documented and he had medals and all from it. he had told my dad and his brothers, "if you join the military, I will cut you out of the will". so my dad the fucking retard joined the army, and was cut out of the will. grandpa had nightmares from it till he died in 2005.

Yes
I still live in the early 2000's

Free 6 week trial of net tv. Trial expires, unplug, replug, make a new account. Free internet, the way god intended.

>early 2000's
>Cheibriados
Does the name Cheibriados predate Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup?
Otherwise this picture is from late 2009 at the earliest.

I have no idear desu ne.
And sorry no I'm a shitter, this was taken roughly a month ago.

I don't miss XP being a security nightmare, but it was the last hurrah for the "earnest dork" Microsoft aesthetic if that makes any sense. The internet also had lots of nice little fansites and forums as opposed to today's consolidation to the social media and web template borg.

Not really Sup Forums related but 2006 was a perfect fucking storm when it came to internet nerd shit; Haruhi, Sony's E3, the start of tons of memes that pop up now and again, Code Geass. Shit was amazing yo.

>orange box
>habbo hotel
I miss these carefree days

glad someone noticed that

More like 2005-2010 was best at least according to me. Not as much rampant degeneracy and forums still had people. Then came the phone posters.
