Why is Jamaica more culturally relevant and iconic than countries who have 50 times its population (Indonesia, Nigeria, Philippines)?

DUDE WEED LMAO

It is closer to the U.S.
The same reason you know more about Mexico than most Latin american countries like Argentina or more about Canada than New Zealand.

Every country that has prominent diaspora in US will have a chance to be included into American pop culture, which in turn makes them popular world wide.

>implying the literal meme nation, the Philippines, isn't iconic

You're just elevating Jamaica because it was a former colony of yours or something

I'm onto you nig

But no one cares about Haiti that's even closer. No one cares about Puerto Rico that's literally U.S. territory.

All these places are also more populated than Jamaica.

People don't know what happens in Philippines, they can't even name one person from your country (except Manny Pacquiao for sports fans), they can't tell either what language you're speaking or whatever.

Regionally, only Indonesia, Laos or Papua New Guinea are thicker mysteries than your country.

I don't know if we can talk about a large Jamaican diaspora in USA. They have a much larger Polish diaspora but who cares about Poland?

stereotypes and dudeweedlmao

>people don't know what happens in the Philippines

Just because our country isn't being bombed or run over by trucks on CNN doesn't mean nothing is happening

Google philippines time magazine

Reggae became popular in America and England.

>no one cares about Haiti
dude everytime there's a "natural" disaster in Haiti you just have to turn on the tv
but an earthquake happens in Turkey and media is like "dude who cares lmao"

1. Weed culture
2. Fast runners

While this is an obvious simplification, Mexico was a relevant country for Europe (eg French intervention) prior to the US becoming a world power, it is the fact that Jamaica has strongly influenced American pop culture via Bob Marley and reggae and Rastafarianism and ganja being a big part of 60's counterculture. While obviously this isn't the country's full history it did give it a distinct personality, and a popular one, compared to other nations in the Caribean. American pop culture is the same reason Haiti is better known for Voodoo and zombies than for having had the first European settlement in the new world or being the first nation in the Americas to gain independence.

Of course stuff is happening, but the question is: why aren't people interested?

Even if you were run over by trucks, I feel it wouldn't be big news here.

Well, Haiti is so low that it becomes interesting when it hits even lower than the bottom. Other than that, no fucks are given.

Meanwhile Turkey is featured in international news every day with the current arrest craze, the migrant crisis, etc.

literally nobody except the mexicans remember about Frenchs in your country, amiwo
it's all about Tijuana/Cancun/ariba ariba. blame your neighbors not me

comfy accent and weed

Bob marley, reggae and weed.

Mexico is also renowned for its unique pre-Colombian culture.

I think most of it's Marley, plus being an anglophone country. Indonesia might have a harder time because they seal their own languages but Nigeria can definitely produce a meme celebrity

They're 181 million, they speak English, but they still haven't a single meme / personality / cultural landmark.

>Jamaica culturally relevant and iconic
That's news to me

Dude, I'm talking the 19th century, Guatemalan guy was jealous and now you think this is a pissing contest. Mexico is the most populous Spanish speaking country in the world and it isn't by a little, on just that we are going to have more attention regardless of the US, For instance we had something of a diplomatic row with France over the arrest of Florence Cassez in our country. It could've hapenned in say Colombia, and at any given time there's probably a half dozen countries (mostyly Francophonie) being tracked in the news cycle. But when you had a full 19th century going from Napoleon admiring Morelos to socialists embracing Juarez to Victor Hugo pleading for our country it isn't exactly like we were just any other country lost somewhere in South America.
