Fuck it lads, too much information, I don't know who to trust. I use this computer for all my sensitive personal stuff, my business, and banking, I can't afford to take any risks. I'm clean wiping.
I reckon this is the perfect time to try Linux. Win 10 is bloated and buggy anyway. I've hesitated so far because I like all my botnets in one Google botnet, and Linux doesn't have Google Drive, so I'll have to move all my docs to Dropbox. But that's a small price to pay for peace of mind. If really hate it overall, I can always put install Win 10 fresh. But the possibility of drive-by is freaking me out. I saw the weird ads at the bottom, and even clicked on one.
I don't know. Curiosity. Every once in a while I click on one of these shitty clickbait links, just to see the state of things. Always in Private mode, and with uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger, so even if some horrible popup loop starts, I can easily end the program, and it hasn't affected my browser profile with cookies etc. Was browsing 4chens in Private mode yesterday too, so didn't think anything terrible would happen.
Btw when I hovered above the banner, the URL displayed wasn't proper. The browser bar at the bottom indicated the address was like >title-of-the-clickbait-story-displayed-like-this incomplete, not dot com ending or anything. And when I clicked, all it seemed to do was open a new tab of the same thread I came from
It's all too strange, I fucked up, now I need to clean up.

>Linux doesn't have Google Drive I think Gnome bakes it in now.

Is javascript really that serious? What the fuck are other websites doing to us, then?
Ryder Jones
Also, you should only click on those in a Read-only OS like Tails or in a VM.
Christian Sanchez
Install Gentoo
Brayden Long
I didn't click the ads but had the scripts on at one point and also typed one of the addresses in url bar

or a virtual machine? kek, I'm starting with Ubuntu

Ok look... Private mode only discards your history for that session. It doesn't save you from drive-by downloads.. Ublock origin also only checks if there are any known-for-ads URL's embedded in the site and removes them. It doesn't save you from drive-by downloads.. Privacy badger is made so that a website can't get infos from other tabs you have open in the same browser.. No drive-by download security either.. The only thing that actually takes measures against these things is noscript.. This disables all javascript on a website. (noscript can be disabled manually if you need JS for something. But do this only on sites that you trust) Also don't click on these links except from inside a virtual machine (though this isn't 100% secure either!)
Also this
Additionally make sure that when you use any form of login credentials or authentication on a site that you're on a safe page (HTTPS) and check the url for any sort of misspelling since SSL certificates (the ones used in HTTPS connections) can be forged.
I wish you luck on your journey user

OP here Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or 17.10? Obviously I can't wait for 18.04

wew lad, post more if you've got it, please.

Damn, I thought Sup Forums regulars were dumb. It looks like crossboarders are at least 10x dumber. How is this even possible? Like, how do you buy a device without knowing how to use it correctly?
James Sullivan
You're not being serious right OP? You saw a banner ad and clicked on one. Genuinely nothing will have happened if you're using an updated browser and OS.

>koreans are so cucked with their porn ban that they fap to kpop stars
s-sorry ubunto 16.04 or 17.10? the wasted space at the top of 17.10 is annoying me but if it does other things better ill be persuaded
i-i want to believe that but everyone else here is scaring me ;_;

>ubunto 16.04 or 17.10? In all honesty, I'd recommend fedora. Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, a POS company that injected amazon tracking into their OS a few years ago, and Ubuntu is based on Debian which has an ancient package manager. I've NEVER had an Ubuntu install where apt didn't mess itself up after a few months.
Fedora, on the other hand is backed by Red Hat: the largest "Linux company" in the world, and the changes made in Fedora directly influence what changes they make to RHEL, their enterprise distribution. They hire multitudes of linux developers, and know what they're doing. And the package manager isn't dogshit.

Make sure you have an ethernet connection while installing. Don't install flash or java on your linux box.
Xavier Cruz
>But that's a small price to pay for peace of mind
Peace of mind, eh? Like the peace of mind you are going to lose when you open an mkv file and there is no video or audio because you installed some garbage non-ubuntu based distro that doesn't come with multimedia codecs?
And don't think that Ubuntu is free from "justlinuxthings" it just happens to have more support and better defaults that the others (for desktop use).
Sebastian Hall
Don't listen to this fag OP. Also ubuntu is pretty bloated. Use xubuntu. It has the xfce desktop
Elijah Price

Also OP, don't put personal stuff on your ACTUAL computer hard drive. Get one of those external 500 gb usb hard drives.

Debian doesn't care about SELinux or other modern security policies, either. Fedora comes hardened out of the box.
The most popular enterprise distribution is RHEL. The second most popular one is CentOS, which is basically an unbranded RHEL. Debian-based distros are very far away, and for good reason.
I used Debian unstable for a couple years on my laptop before I got fed up with apt's bullshit and Debian's shitty documentation. I switched to Fedora, and never looked back.
Henry Nguyen
Nice try. Systemd faggot.
Gabriel Gomez
Oh look some faggot already pushing OP into installing a distro that doesn't even play mp3 by default
HAHAHAH enjoy your peace of mind OP. You will surely forget about your one Windows problem with all your new Linux problems
John Diaz
This. Make the switch OP.
Carson Phillips
I challenge you to name at least three ways systemd has been an inconvenience to you.
Protip: you can't, because you don't know jack shit about linux. Have you even written a systemd unit? If you did, you'd know just how much nicer systemd is for administrators.
Brayden Anderson
>purposefully de-selects "Multimedia Support" in the installer >"hurr hurr fedora doesn't support mp3 by default"
You're right, i am a brainlet but i do know systemd is BLOAT
Hunter Baker
Try ubuntu the only linux distro for normies
Julian Smith
I will give you two ways harry potter has fucked with me
My amplifier no longer being recognized because fuck your shitty pulseaudio abomination.
Not being able to wake up my PC with a bluetooth device.
Those two things worked flawlessly before your shitty Red Hat software made it into my distro.
Michael Kelly
Can you even define the word "bloat", as it relates to this context? Actually, do you even know what systemd does?
Sorry bud, but while I respect the suckless people, just linking to them and spouting memes means nothing.
>My amplifier no longer being recognized because fuck your shitty pulseaudio abomination. pulseaudio is pretty shit for anything outside the most common usecases, I agree completely. But I was talking about systemd, not pulseaudio and other lennart-ware. Fedora makes it pretty easy to switch out pulseaudio, if you so choose.
>Not being able to wake up my PC with a bluetooth device. sounds like a driver issue
Adrian Rivera
This. You'll save yourself money and from fear mongering with this simple fix, user

Or for people that have weird laptops that can only boot Ucuntu and still have working CUDA acceleration
Btw, I use Arch just not on my laptop Also btw, I use i3 wm Also also btw,.....
I use Arch

noscript doesn't disable javascript anymore since it went to webextension, it can now only block it. And uBlock can do that too, you just need to tell it to so because it doesn't do it in default mode.
Brayden Harris
>ublock can do that too How?
Landon Price
Search google-drive-ocalmfuse. It's not a real syncing solution but it's quite useful.
Levi Ortiz
OP HERE ALRIGHT, I'M DOING IT LADS Played around with both 16.04 and 17.10 I'm going with 16.04 for now because I like Unity better, that wasted space at the top of Gnome is annoying. Whatever I chose, I'll have to install 18.04 in April anyway, so I'll enjoy Unity while it lasts.
I'M ABOUT TO DO IT RIGHT NAO ANY REASON NOT TO WIPE THE EXISTING WINDOWS SETUP? SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR SILENCE!
Thanks but fuck it I'll just use Dropbox
Nolan Jackson
oh wait what am I saying, 16.04 will be supported to April 2021, so if I like it I can stay with it for nearly 3.5 years :)
Easton Garcia
I did it, Reddit! Srsly though, what do I do now? What are some essential setup things?
Wyatt King
compton if using xfce
Cooper Lewis
Ubuntu 16.04 So getting used to this new way of installing software Weird If I hate it I can always go back to Winblows, but Binbows was annoying me a lot even before this hiroshimoot scandal anyway.
Noah Torres
You'll be back.
Alexander Williams
Keep us updated senpai. I think you'll come to like apt. I wish Windows had a proper package manager. >inb4 windows app store That's a late stage cancer, not a package manager.

Linux does have google drive, at least you can access it and integrate it into your file manager, sadly it's shit on Linux. Google's fault.
John Reed
>using the same computer for casual browsing and business

This is why I hate Linux. Or at least getting recommendations from Sup Forums. The former's post has a sound reasoning, then the latter comes in and makes me think it's all shill tactics. Can't there be one version of Linux that is universally GOOD without a consolewars-tier argument? Fuxake
Robert Diaz
it was literally some guy using a shady proxy
did you expect him not to get hacked using one of those
Now, I'v already visited Sup Forums before doing this, so how do I remove what ever got on my PC from being here? Is there something in my cache I can delete, any tips?
I just want to be safe ;(
Luis Powell
Clean install OR Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes scan. I accidentally torrented a bad vidya game rip and got hit. I cleaned out a few things by hand. Check your hosts file and make sure it's not blocking malware sites.
Grayson Kelly
Cheers for that filter user
Not sure what to do now either though. Running antivirus and malwarebytes scans but neither is making me feel any better
Julian Collins
Linux is just a kernel.

Phantom webserver?
Juan Barnes
But which one is GOOD? I'm beginning to think that Linux is just like pizza - There are different toppings, so people will fight to the death over which one is best even though it's only a matter of opinion. Whereas, here I am on Sup Forums thinking that there's actually a universally agreed upon version of Linux that does everything right. But no, just Sup Forums's equivalent to console wars.
Connor Watson
They're all good, doublenigger. The problem isn't which ones suck. The problem is that it's literally everyone having a different idea of good at the same time. It's all good to someone. Else it wouldn't exist.
Gavin Mitchell
What the fuck is this shit and why is it required for the page to display properly? Happens on at least a handful of boards but not all.

I know a woman that larps as a "tax business" where all shes does is buy a copy of turbotax and runs random peoples info though it to make a profit off of them. She keeps all of her customers private and confidential info saved in plain text on the laptop and regularly lets her retarded son and drug addict daughter use the computer. They download all kinds of random shit and even let people connect to the computer though team viewer.
Grayson Wood
wasn't it already discovered that the ads have no actual drive-by downloads and that everything they possibly could inject in the future would still be detectable by antiviruses unless it's straight up more nsa spyware?
i swear fags cackle like chickens saying it's some MEGA TROJAN CODED IN HELL
Brody Foster
meant to say it's dormant, as in it COULD download shit but doesn't yet, so as long as you've done the necessary blocking or moved to non-windows shit you're safe

Not the OP, but what do you recommend aside from malwarebytes? My computer has been bugging hard. RogueKiller was able to detect a few things, but it couldn’t find the culprit. I can’t even use system restore to restore to an earlier point.
