/sqt/ - Stupid question thread. In this thread we ask stupid questions, that doesn't deserve new thread.

I have ADSL connection, and it disconnects and not connects, until I short the phone line. Why and what is happening? Shitty wiring? Shitty modem? Shitty everything?

Is the RX 560 a "decent" card for pre-rendered 4k(videos) and x265 hardware decoding? I just need something to replace my fermi(90C idle temps anyone?) I dont game and just need something for video watching.

shitty wiring. get a specialist in.

>
Not him, but I have clone/image questions if you don't mind:

Can you NOT clone from 1 MOBO to another? (Same with image I assume.) So I can't just buy several computers and clone them all as the same?

Suggestion on easiest (most trouble-free) clone/image program?

...

Specialist is already called, but holidays...

So I switched from a pajeetROM I was using for a while to Lineage. It's pretty great so far, but one thing the shitty rom had was a bunch of statusbar ricing that I'm already starting to miss.

Are there ways to get the following in Lineage?
>date (preferably WWW DD/MM if it's not customisable, but any will do)
>de-emphasised seconds (I like seconds sometimes but don't want to visually parse three numbers every time I check the time)
>tapping on the time to open the clock app (I'm now realising I can't fucking live without this for setting alarms and timers quickly)
>current network activity (along the lines of bits uploaded and downloaded in the last second, updating once per second obviously)
>possibly, but less important than the rest: a "battery bar" at the top of the screen
I know a whole bunch of pajeet ROMs have some of those features, so it's not something that one guy who made my particular rom built all by himself. But I don't know where to even begin looking to try to get those features.

I think so, just make sure your cpu doesn't bottleneck it.

Make sure to get the one with the blue LED fans because they spin faster

Does anyone know of a better way to control a Labvolt 5250 then the fuck-awful program it ships with?

Get a UPS

To my limited knowledge on the matter, you should be fine if you're plugged into a surge protector. Surge protectors SHOULD protect from big spikes, and your power supply itself (the transformer within) should even out voltage moving around a little up/down.

If you have a shitty old surge protector, might be time to buy a new one.

How the fuck do I get Void to install on UEFI?
Burned ISO with Rufus, with the UEFI GPT option, booted with USB but nothing happens

Inter-mobo you have drivers and activation problems. Often the more recent versions of windows can do a repair boot and adjust the drivers, but not always. Correct solution is to run sysprep before you clone.

You can usually move a license from an old board to a new one

windowscentral.com/how-re-activate-windows-10-after-hardware-change

But you definitely can't get the license to run on multiple PCs at the same time.

Best program is macrium reflect. Crappier options include clonezilla and dd.

What is the most lightweight operating system
Windows 10 LTSB or Windows 7?

Probably the filter got fucked up, it's a box that separate your phone line from the ADSL line.

x265 anime?

May be. But I am shorting line before splitter.
And yea, I do not have analog phone... So, why they can't give me extra 56k/sec?

linux

Already using this, need windows for another computer

I want to check my GPU and CPU temperatures, but I want to do it using FOSS alternatives. Is there a better alternative than Open Hardware Monitor?

Are there any decent 3d mouse pads on amazon or will they all be chink trash?

Most people around here use Speccy.

But it's not FOSS right? I kinda want to use something FOSS because obsession.

Should I get a wireless USB mouse for my laptop, or a Bluetooth mouse?
I've always used wireless USB, they never fail me. But I'm leaning towards Bluetooth because I'll also be able to use it with my Chromebook.

Have you ever actually modified something FOSS and used it yourself?

Hardware monitor is the best there is

What's a good Sticky Notes alternative for Windows? The default one kinda sucks.

In the wake of Christmas and everyone getting the wiretap that is Amazon echo, I'm becoming paranoid. How do I make sure that I'm not being watched and listened to?

easiest free way to stream video from my computer to my phone? I do not wish to pay for an app.

Is there a way to execute a command on a visual-block highlighted text in vim naturally?

I know you can do like, :! cmd % to run the command on the FILE, but can you do it for a single highlighted 'selection'?

Just a quick update, I know a few days ago an user recommended I look into a mirror in order to tell if I am dreaming or awake since the mirrors won't work, but last night I dreamed that I spilled hot coffee into my eye and ran into the bathroom to check in the mirror. Everything looked perfectly normal except for some red circles on the white of the eye where the coffee drops hit, sort of looking like little circular veins or something, and a single brown drop of coffee dripping down the bottom. So I'm not sure how effective this method really is.

vlc or kodi can play videos and streams from remote sources

For some reason my tablet is now unable to play the .mp4 files I produced with ffmpeg and have been viewing on this device for over half a year. What gives? I suspect it might have to do with the tablet's res being 1280x800, and the videoe being 1080p, but a hard cap on this suddenly is some bullshit. The tablet has also been slow as of late. I don't know what's going on. Model is Samsung Galacy Tab E, if it matters, and no system update for months.

I think the mirror thing only works in a lucid dream. Otherwise your brain just ignores any irregularities since the critical part is shut down anyway.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a PCI-e 4 port gigabit NIC that will work with Linux/BSD/pfsense/opnsense?

Im thinking about getting this

ebay.com/itm/DELL-YT674-PRO-1000-VT-PCI-E-NIC-4-PORT-GIGABIT-SERVER-ADAPTER-EXPI9404VT-/201546662426?hash=item2eed1e021a

No, but I think it's important because this software will find out the deepest secrets of my hardware, I want it to be slightly more trustworthy than other software.

Thank you.

Thank you I will check.

>that will work with Linux/BSD/pfsense/opnsense?
In other words you want one that works with Linux and *BSD.

HOLY shit I think it's unironically because the resolution is greater than my screen. A random 1080p webm I once saved cannot be played offline on my tablet anymore.

Holy fuck why would this even happen???? The last update check (not even an update) was two months ago, and I've been able to play these videos since after that. Why would my tablet suddenly not play videos higher res than its screen, after two years of allowing it...

>No,
then it's purely a fashion accessory for you.
Unless you audit every piece of FOSS software yourself, it's literally no different. You're just going off a label.

Any idea how I can get this windows 10 update to fuck off? It pops up shortly after I start up and if I leave my PC on for long enough it pops up again.

Is there a trigger I can disable somewhere?
The update breaks my PC (the screen goes black then it resets to the previous update).

Currently I wait for this pop up, then hide it, end the process in the task manager and disable the 'windows update' service.

This works for several hours or until a restart but i'm sick of doing it.

I was thinking of deleting the 'Windows10Upgrade' folder in my C drive but idk if that will mess up my PC

any ideas?

modems/routers/switches will detect power (electricity) coming into a port and determine that that port is up and should stay up. If there's no power going in, it will assume the port is down and thus shut it down. If your wiring is iffy and the power is going up and down intermittently then it might assume it's down and shut it down.

>Setup a network share on your computer
>Dump your files there ( recommended to be organized by video, song, movies, artist, etc)
>Access said share with Kodi or vlc from your phone

Is it "STATISTICALLY SLIGHTLY MORE TRUSTWORTHY" than other software if it is FOSS?

Any way to get audio to come out multiple interfaces on pc? We're trading off on PUBG with my roommate and it's better for the player to listen with headphones so they can hear footsteps better, but I also want to be able to hear out the tv that we're playing on. So can I get the audio out both headphone jack and hdmi interfaces?

Not necessarily.

Deleting the folder works, it will say update failed, but it will come back after you reboot.

What are some modern applications of expansion slots. I dont see why motherboards and cases accommodate for so many of them if most people only use them is for a GPU. This is of course in the context of a home user.

Ok goys, so I have been tearing myself apart about which gpu I should get. Should I go for the 1060 or the 580. I was going for the 1060 until I learned about AMD and their awesome freesync. There is more, cheaper variety for freesync monitors. Should I just get a 580?

Is there a chance that is higher than any other software?

>is a vague case possible to fit my naive and dumb preference
sure
There's also ones to fit the opposite. You do FOSS a disservice by advocating it on label alone.

Should you use Outlook / Windows 10 Mail?

It seems convenient but I don't know if MS is gonna use my email details to force MS bloatware on me

>sure
>There's also ones to fit the opposite. You do FOSS a disservice by advocating it on label alone.
Let's go back to the beginning then:
Is it "STATISTICALLY SLIGHTLY MORE TRUSTWORTHY" than other software if it is FOSS?

I wrote that part in uppercase because I knew you were going to claim that you could find samples that are not more trustworthy than others.

I don't audit it myself, but my understanding is if I'm one of the hundreds of users, there will be ways to audit it and improve it if it is FOSS. Compare that to something closed source. This is just one aspect of FOSS, I don't think I'm doing a disservice to FOSS because literally this is one of the core objectives of FOSS. They don't expect everyone to be well versed in computer science.

moar USB ports

Can i use any PCIe to mPCIe adapter to put a GPU in my Thinkpad?

You're buying the wrong form factor if you have far too many PCIe slots. mITX only has one, DTX has two, etc. There are larger form factors for people who need more expansion cards, such as NICs, RAID controllers, coprocessors, capture cards, TV tuners, etc.

why are you using windows 10 if you're concerned about bloatware?

>PCI
Legacy support

>PCIe x16
GPUs in general.
SSDs.
Server shit.

>PCIe x1-x4
Soundcards.
USB ports.
M2 SSD adapters.
WLAN cards.
MOAR USB ports.
LAN card.
mSATA adapters.
MOAR SATA adapters.
RAID controller.
IDE adapters.
And so on.

We are not most people.
Better have them and not need them than need them and dont have them.

...

If you pick product X over Y just because X is FOSS and Y isn't. As well as, if you don't even take the time to atleast skim the source to see what kind of product you're using , or find potentially sketchy or alarming things, then yes, you are. I may sound like an anti-FOSS shill, but it's the opposite. I just loathe people like you. Same as Sup Forumsermin who praise Linux while being on stock ubuntu.

I don't understand your logic. Mine is really pragmatic:
- I think I should be able to choose what I run on my computer.
- I don't have the expertise to find out exactly what the software is doing (except for some).
- I choose the one that is less likely to include things that I wouldn't want to run on my computer.
- Other software don't even give anyone the opportunity to find out, so I think FOSS is better in that aspect.

What part of this is not logical?

Part of the knowledge gathering process about a software that you don't understand is asking about it to others, which was exactly what I was doing. I honestly do not understand what kind of world do you imagine a true FOSS one would be.

Is there such thing as Molex to wall socket adapter?

It's called a PSU

I don't think so, are you going to connect computer fans to wall sockets? That won't work, because they usually have DC motors.

I want to connect my tv as clone of a main screen. Afaik, windows can't clone displays selectively(i've 3 displays), so i've already bought cheap passive hdmi splitter, but i'm not sure if it'll have enough power to connect display over 3m cable and tv over 10m cable. I can't check it right now since i still don't have 10m hdmi cable yet. Will it work? Or should i get active hdmi-rj45-rj45-hdmi repeater and 10m ethernet cable instead of hdmi one?

If that's what he's doing then he just needs a 12V wallwart. I've done it before to cool mining ASICs.

I was thinking of a single cable.
I only need Molex for a external GPU.

A 50w GPU.
So i guess i still need a proper PSU.

vidya gaems also its not that bad after you disable everything

>Got a new tool set for christmas
>decide to finally clean my 6 year old laptop for the first time since I can finally take it apart properly
>clean it
>put it back together
>turn it back on
>now all of my right USB ports don't work at all

Googled it and tried the software fixes but it's probably not that, if I fucked it up can I fix it easily myself?

>disable updates

:^)

Hey so I just got new Hyper X alphas for Christmas, mic works perfectly etc. But the sound is weird, it sounds kinda distant. The headset I used to use was a Razer Tiamat 7.1. Am I coming down in sound quality from the Razer Tiamat to the Alpha's? (My alphas are NOT the USB ones). Why do they sound so distant or "echoey"

How do you fuck up all your USB ports.
Do they even get power?
Can you boot out them?

Windows Home, Pro or LTSB?

>le gamer headset
they probably have some virtual "surround" effect enabled

Hi Poo, have you tried the loo?
>and not connects

They don't power on anything through them, only my left single USB port works.

>le gamer headset
Makes sense. I play lots of games.
>they probably have some virtual "surround" effect enabled
All I did was plug the fuckers in, I have been googling for drivers and shit.

could somebody give me a (You), I'm testing something

>its not that bad after you disable everything
it is exactly that bad, and there are things you can't disable like the lack of quality control and thought behind changes

i don't know why you'd do that to yourself when windows 7 and 8.1 are still supported

Do you have a Linux USB?

Did you use any kind of liquid other than isopropyl alcohol when cleaning your laptop?

sent

thanks m8

I don't have a linux USB. When I removed the bottom panel of it I took a damp paper towel and ran it over the dusty areas of it since there weren't any electronics on it. I then dried it off directly after and made sure it was completely dry before bringing it even near the rest of the laptop.

it's an old VPCER34FX Vaio to give an idea how it looks.

Why do so many people die on Christmas?

Suicides

could I bother you for one more

Does it really matter whether you're part of the botnet at this point? I mean even if you manage to avoid every possible piece of software/hardware that spies on you, it's a near certainty that the people you talk to are being spied on, so your data is basically gonna get leaked either way. Why not just forget about it and go on with your life?

First explain me, why out all things you decided to use water and not any kind of alcohol on it.
And why not a rag instead of paper.
You are supposed to use canned air or alternatively a brush or a toothbrush on dusty areas of the case.
Water leaves residues on the stuff it was used, alcohol evaporates.

Did you fully disassemble it or only the back cover?

is kuman software safe

Also I dont know your exact model but the ones like it have a cable to connect 2 or 3 USB ports on the right side, did you disconnected it at one point?

How come Windows doesn't have a shitload of different distros like Linux does?

Giving no choice to customer kills the choice.

Its like you never heard of Windows Black Wolf Pro Extra clones.

I took the back cover off, blasted the fan with canned air, and the back cover but some dust was so caked on there that it didn't come off. It was all plastic with no electronics connected to it so it didn't occur to me that anything bad could happen from it if I dried it up directly after.

I could have on accident, I'll have to take it back apart tomorrow and see. It's getting too late for me to take it apart again.

If it was discovered that cattle are sentient and just as intelligent as humans are, do you think the beef industry would shut down overnight? Or would they try to make up excuses to keep it going regardless?

Then you forgot to reconnect it, all you have to do is connect it correctly.

It should look like this, but wider and cable should be thicker with 3 USB ports.
This why they are not giving power or data.

And why your left USB port is, because it is directly in your motherboard while the others aren't.

Alright, I'll check it out in the morning. Thanks for the help user.

What's a good kodi build for the firestick.
They all seem slow and just hangs up mostly. Takes like 15 minutes or so just to get something streaming.

late you
