What is software minimalism?
suckless.org/philosophy
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimalism_(computing)

Beginners guide to GNU/Linux minimalism

1) Get comfortable with the terminal and learn terminal commands. Practice makes perfect.

computerhope.com/unix.htm
computerhope.com/unix/overview.htm
computerhope.com/unixtop1.htm

2) Try one of the listed GNU/Linux distros inside a VM (Virtual Machine) before installing it on real hardware

3) Ask questions in the thread.

If you use Arch, Manjaro, Ubuntu, Mint , Antergos, Solus, Fedora or any other of the thousands of BLOAT GNU/Linux meme distros. Don't bother posting in this thread.

What about OpenBSD?

I'd like to see a screenshot

alpine is nifty for being a wholly non-GNU distro out of the box
but after like a week, I gave up on that shit
it's mostly a hassle
getting X to start was dramatically more hassle than it should have been (yeah, yeah, it's mainly meant for running in VMs doing server shit and being really skinny so you can run more VMs and have more program time available for whatever you're serving, but hey)
I'm also really curious as to why the standard headers (you know, for shit like printf) aren't listed as dependencies for clang or gcc or whatever too.
also, not having bash installed made me acutely aware of how many scripts expect bash (read: just about every non-trivial one)

it is pretty damn slim though, a hell of a lot slimmer than a minimal debian (which is what I went and did instead)

When you're so minimal you don't even waste space on mentioning the fact you're minimal.

Old screenshot I posted in a Desktop thread on /wg/ like a week ago.
I'll post a more up-to-date one later.

Kekkk

Suckless should be renamed to suckmost.

Any suggetsions for torrent clients? I'm working on a seedbox and looking for something minimal.

I don't get it, do we have to go back to the hardware level to avoid being engulfed in this VM based dystopia?

rtorrent i guess

What?

>mfw I actually understand timecube
That was a fucked up day

Op here. explain it to me please.

Well I watched this

youtube.com/watch?v=59uGH9raOV8

Then immediately remembered Time Cube and then suddenly everything made sense.

Okay but do you fully understand it? What do i get out of understanding it?
Anything else i should know?

>Okay but do you fully understand it
I understand it as 'more true than anything else I've been told' But I'm stuck on the 'why'

>What do i get out of understanding it?
How esoteric are you willing to get?

The neat part is how it settles the differences between flat earth and round earth.

>Anything else i should know?
Not sure, this train of thought has gotten me wrapped up last couple months though. I'm going to get a VR setup so I can manipulate 4D objects and see if I can't make sense of it.

Hmm okay..Why don't you think scientists don't want to start a discussion on this topic?

Do you like ash? I use mksh but im thinking about switching.

Is Wayland /minimal/?

I meant FIM not FBV (Fbi(frame-buffer image) IMproved)

Special mention to jfbview another console image viewer with pdf.

Arch (not a zealot but so far it seems pretty great)
hlwm
feh
ranger
bash
qutebrowser
xterm

>Why don't you think scientists don't want to start a discussion on this topic
They would if they could, but it'd require a massive paradigm shift across several studies. Like History.

You'd also have to be willing to go against the grain long enough for other people to catch on.

so for shells, everyone seems to focus in on the pdksh-side of the kshes. mksh, openbsd ksh, etc.

But what about the original AT&T ksh, which is now open source? is ksh93 /minimal/?
kornshell.com/
github.com/att/ast

Damn okay. What other stuff should i look into besides the time cube?

I would gladly use it but i can't. Fuck AT&T. It's either mksh, ash or dash

>Fuck AT&T

It's much faster compared to bash and more minimal for automated tasks and scripting but it's harder to interface with so it's nice as a backend and using Fish or ZSH as your userland interface.
Both are slower but have more intuitive and interactive aspects.

Ash makes no attempt at hand holding like Bash but it has a lot of the same Bashisms and probably the best Bash compatibility compared to even ZSH and Fish.

This same architecture stack has been used on debian for a long time because of the improved operating performance.

You interact with Bash to simplify but if you look it's main dependency is ash.
You can actually compile Debian without Bash but by default it's setup like that.

Wayland is a protocol and the implemented compositors can be minimal.
Look into Sway or Way Cooler.

Gnome for example is much larger in comparison and I expect even more minimal implementations as the interest increases.

The rabbit hole goes incredibly deep user. You'll probably have a couple existential crises

Okay sounds interesting but i want to know how YOU research this stuff and why YOU are into this stuff?

>i want to know how YOU research this stuff and why YOU are into this stuff?
I read books that interest me. Go to historically important places. etc. Just absorb information man.

I'm into it because I enjoy seeking knowledge. I'd rather know the sad truth than a happy lie. Maybe it's Thoth, who knows.

Okay thanks man. Last question, you know any stuff about aliens?

What was the name of the person that makes these again? I was thinking of buying a print but forgot about it

>know
Nope, not enough to speak about them like I did at least lol.

I definitely saw a UFO when I was 12 though. It was hidden technology or aliens. It went faster than anything I've ever seen. One of my most vivid memories.

Maybe they're from space. Maybe they're inter dimensional. Maybe they're demons(dimens). I can die happy when I find out though. Speaking of which, knowing some basic latin will help you too.

Paul Laffoley

Thanks

it's really not very minimal at all, it uses like 200mb of memory with nothing open
I wanted plank cause it looked nifty but it uses like 40mb of ram which is dumb
I'd like to make it a bit lighter but when the browser uses like 3 times as much as my entire operating system as soon as you start it it all feels a little pointless you know

>openbox 8.3M
am I doing something wrong or what?

The person who benchmarked these things was on slackware

the browser is currently using 8 times as much ram as everything else combined
is there a browser that doesn't do this or is this more the fault of bloated web pages?

oh that explains it

I think it's the fault of the browsers needing to be bloated to be able to display the bloated web pages.

also, if you're looking for ways to shrink it slightly/improve things:
Use sxiv for image viewer
Use mpv for video player and mpd for music
Use urxvtd/urxvtc for terminals.
