When did you wake up to the realization that 8GB RAM is not enough anymore?

When did you wake up to the realization that 8GB RAM is not enough anymore?

I've always had 16gb RAM and realized it only was just enough for everything.

unoptimized games that would still run fine if i turned the settings down a bit
still fell for the 16GB ram meme, now feel like killing myself because 6 is actually more than enough

I just hit the point where 6GiB wasn't enough, still haven't bothered upgrading to 8GiB.

I have 1.5GiB in my laptop and 2GiB in my desktop and I've yet to run out of memory on any of them. Heck, my homeserver has 512MiB and it's only started swapping when seeding 10+ torrents and handling a couple samba transfers.

4gb and a ssd just works for me desu

I'm gonna try to get either 32GB or 64GB of RAM by the end of 2018.

What are you doing on your computer that requires so much ram? 4gb is enough for most task like browsing the Web and 8gb will handle most games. I myself have 16gb and it's overkill.

16 can run out real fast doing any kind of photo editing or rendering

2011

8 gigs is fine for a laptop or something where you aren't going to be heavily multi tasking
but for your main computer (unless you only browse the internet) you've "needed" it since like 2015ish

I got 28GB total, though I'm hardly ever using more than 8 at the time.

2019

When web browsers started using more RAM than everything else running on my computer combined. Pic related is from having 50 tabs open

>OS - 1%
>Terminal - 0.2%
>Text editor - 0.5%
>Media player - 2%
>Web browser with a few news articles open - 95%

Fuck this future, seriously.

Well not any kind, just REALLY high resolution files with a billion layers. You can edit most images taken on your phone or DSLR while limiting Photoshop to use less than 1GB RAM. Same with videos, just use proxies instead of loading everything into RAM.

You know that it will make Photoshop running slower, don't you? You have to make a choice, RAM or time.

>8GB RAM in desktop
>open firefox
>run out of RAM and crash within a few hours

>3GB RAM in laptop
>open firefox
>run out of RAM and crash within 10 minutes

FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF FUCK OFF

Sure, but I seriously doubt that you'll end up hitting that limit with most use cases of Photoshop. I tried searching for the highest resolution RAW sample there is, and I couldn't find anything over 8k pixels in either direction, which PS handles just fine with several layered effects, color correction, masking and a few filters, all of which took about 2-3 seconds to apply without raping the disk IO.

Again, MOST use cases. You could open 15 images side by side if you wanted to with 300 layers on each, but most people don't need to do that for "any kind of photo editing".

Depends on what you're doing. For my shitposting laptop, 8GB is enough, tho only because I run a distro centred around compiling, and compiling firefox requires 8GB of RAM. Could probably do very well with 2-4GB if I used a distro that mostly served out binary packages.

16GB should be enough for games, most games wont take more than 8GB, but there are some exceptions. 32GB if you're learning or doing a lot of work with virtualiization. As much RAM as you can afford is the sweet spot when prices are low.

I suppose it depends on the application...

My Wyse terminals only have 4GB, and they work fine. The VM's they connect to on the other hand have 16GB.

Laptop has 32GB, desktop has 16GB ECC.

Server has 256GB, management point has 16GB.

Firewall has 4GB, Tinkerboards have 2GB, phones have 6GB, and tablets have 4GB.

Fun thing about virtualization is that you can now define RAM in software, kind of.

>4GB Desktop
>Firefox running for 6+ hours a day
>Not a single issue since a decade
Git gud faggot

I realized 8 isn't enough a long time ago.

>Solidworks FEA
>Photo rendering
>Astrophotography alignment/stacking

Hell, even a fair amount of games push to 8 GB of RAM use regularly, and more if you use mods. And that's without multitasking or anything.

do you not have the latest firefox with the multiprocess faggotry?

>not having the maximum amount of RAM that your motherboard supports

I had 16 GiB installed and unironically ran out constantly.

Why would anybody sane update Firefox until absolutely necessary for plugins or after all the bullshit their terrible nu-dev team implements is fixed or removed?

>tfw my computer is mostly in a CPU-0%, RAM-90% state.
Older 6 Core Intel and 14GB DDR3 RAM here.
Runs 1-2 VMs together with Chrome hoarding. Chrome took most of the RAM of course.

>14 GB
teach me senpai

Quad Channel, 4GB(2133MHz) 4GB(2133MHz) 4GB(1600MHz) 2GB(1333MHz)
Basically the worst combo ever, the 2133MHz cannot be taken advantage of because the 1333MHz stick crashes on 1600MHz. I figured I need the extra RAM than the higher speed. I ain't buying new/used DDR3 anymore.

Nigga a 2GB stick of 1600 should be $30

Nigga that's expensive. I paid 40-50 dollars for 8GB (1600 MHz ofc.) in 2013.

I have a fucking AMD ''Kabini'' Athlon 5350 man, ram is definitely not my bottleneck.

8+4+2

I upgraded to 24GB because that's the max my board supports, I did so when I started running a server OS in a vm on my desktop instead of getting a separate machine just for it, I also do a lot of video production and the trend of software is leaning towards people just embedding some form of webkit in their program that uses 600MB just to sit idle in the tray instead of using native gui toolkits to host an icon and a context menu.

never.

I'll even downgrade to 4 GB next month. I'm getting a Ryzen 1700 for my HTPC. 4 GB should be sufficient for movie playback and browsing. I won't pay 100 € for a shitty 8 GB stick. Maybe I can find a cheap used module on Ebay but I don't count on it. I could steal another 4 GB module from my 5820K rig if something doesn't work. They would run on 8/12 GB then.

Enough for what?

I do profile testing on a 64gb workstation and some times that is not enough.

There are many problems in which you need retarded amounts of ram.

kek I recently upgraded from 4 gig I know no one here uses chrome but just for fun desu download chrome and open about 12 tabs

Uh. I could live with 2GB (what i have in my netbook) no problem, the 4GB in my mba, or the 8GB in my ideapad that pulls 1.5GB as video RAM straight out of the gate so it's really 6.5GB. You only "need" more than 8GB if you're doing virtualization or running a shit OS like winderps10 and are a manchild gaymurrr faggot.

when I use adobe or other photo video software

Who decided that this shithole was a marketing target? We get it, no one is buying ram with your shitty artificial price inflation. Coming here and trying to prey on inadequacy is a strategy of failure though; this is one of the most kissless virgin filled boards, inadequacy is all a lot of these dudes know. Trying to make them feel something they feel all day long isn't going to work any more than trying to sell them dating site subscriptions by making them feel alienated from society.

>R7 1700
>4GB RAM

You will bottleneck your machine. your computer starts using paged memory as you approach your 4GB cap, instead of after you hit it.

Splurge and get 8GB, doesn't even have to be above 2133/2400mhz.

Too expensive. I'll install a NVMe 960. I'm currently running on 6 GB without problems.

Aren't 4 GB still enough for browsing, opening Winrar archives and movies?

8 GB shit sticks cost 100 € here. A good 3200 dual kit over 100. Last year I bought a 16 GB quad kit for 45 €...

I am not , but he is right, that is expensive even for our currency.
In my region 2nd hand stuff are too expensive for what it is(and of course as a result almost no one buys them) and is not really worth it. I would rather upgrade that machine to a DDR4 platform first(I already have 2 of that, so doing that for at least a few more years).
I am running Quad Channel. Not an X58 fag.

*delaying not doing

I could use some advice on this:

I currently have 16(8x2)gb, and I want to upgrade. I believe another 8gb should be enough, but I also heard that by having an 8x3 you would loose some "dual channel" thing.
Is it too bad? Should I get another 8x2, instead?

I do a lot of heavy 3d stuff, and I'm the kind of person who has ~20 tabs open at all times. I also play demanding games, but that's not that important.

Dual channel mode is mostly beneficial for igpu, and offers little to no real world improvement with a dgpu.

My phone has 8gig of ram

>8 GB isn't enough
>32 GB is all you'll need for now
So:
>8 GB isn't enough to write emails and browse facebook
>But 32 GB is enough for supercomputers owned by big companies or Nasa or whatever when calculating 50 billion petabytes of data or some shit
There is no perfect amount of ram, retards

640K of memory is more than enough

If you are on Ryzen, Skylake-Covfefe Lake mainstream platform, you do lose Dual Channel.
If you are on Threadripper, X99 or X299, you will be on triple channel.
>20 tabs
That's not even a lot.

>tfw you fell for the 16GB ram meme

32 is current sweet spot, 16 is too small to not have to worry about it. I have 64 GB in main rig,32 in laptop and bed shitposting rig.

You could get by with 16 just have to be a little bit more careful

What do you mean? 4gb is more than enough for Linux.

For a normal person, 2GB should be more than enough. The only people who need more than that are:
>retarded gaymers (lol redundant)
>VM soyboy nu-devs
>ADHD kids who need 1000 chromium tabs
>actual creative production people (who dont post on Sup Forums)

After I ran out of RAM using a web browser.
I'm considering just buying 32GB of DDR3 on ebay or something.

>Brother got 16 gigs DDR3
>I got 8 gigs of DDR4
>Wonders why my shit runs faster

I (((develop))) in javascript. I've always known this, because my programs are shit and hog every resource there is.

I'm all those things, fuck you gonna do about it

I use 64GB with an 18 cores CPU and it's close

When I realized that Windows used 4GB on its own, and then browsers started to use many gigabytes, and then many applications use things like Electron...

I don't even have any VMs running here.

I don't own any adobe software and I don't do video editing.

Still manage to use more than you.

And no I do not have my life together. You see someone using this much RAM just walk away, it's not worth it.

Not related to the topic, but can one of you tell me why a pretty basic computer with nothing fancy running would frequently experience very high disk usage ?

My father in laws PCs C drive hits 100% when he performs basic tasks like opening a jpg or opening up chrome.

Look in task manager to see what is using the disk

In the future when I ran into issues.

When I tried running dark souls 3 and browser at the same time without swap file.

Wolfenstein II runs fine with 8 GB.

Don't let the PC journalists invested in RAM companies tell you otherwise.

Okay, thanks

Windows will use a percent.

I have 8 GB of RAM, and doing nothing, Windows less than 2.

If you're using Windows 10 it's probably because the OS was designed to run on a SSD. It's so much more disk intensive with all the random shit it's always reading.

/thread

>even consoles
Even PHONES have 8gb now.

I want 19GB of RAM just to fuck with aspies.

when I started using chrome

When i started doing java web dev, i wish i was fuckink kidding but Eclipse, MySQL workbench and Chrome uses too god damn much ram

When I built my new computer in 2015 and ran Garry's mod to see what it was all about. It maxed my ram instantly and I shut the game down and ordered 8GB more.

When I used a local Kubernetes cluster for non trivial stuff.
Also, local installation of DCOS

nigga, I still use my late 2010 iMac with 4 Gb of ram, and it still gets me through what I do. You simply have shitty RAM.

this.

Unless you're a nixfag, 2GiB isn't enough for a modern system.

Also
>retards compiling huge projects (who actually work)

Around 2007.

>12GB
not a power of two
enjoy your cucked RAM

High resolution SPH simulations.

>huge projects

I bought 32 GB back in 2012 for like $40 on sale. Fuck memory prices right now.

>more ram + better
I just wish people could optimize their shit

When the web became such a bloated piece of shit

VMs.

When I started rending videos in premiere pro or using VMs.

3 years ago lol

I have 128gb in my dev server because sql server. Laptops both have 32gb. Would gladly have 64gb in laptops if that config were available in a laptop I liked.

To do what?
Game, compile, image edit and shitpost? You're flushing money, stick to 16.
Virtualization, computer learning, data mining and photoshop really fucking huge images? Yeah, you're going to need it.

Name a work program that is not photoshop and must use more than 4 gb
No gaymes

>2008
photoshop can do the same things, but runs with just a few gb of ram
>2018
16gb is necessary apparently

I've been using 24gb for like 9 years now
16gb is more than enough for gaming if you play in high presets plus mods and other stuff in the background. 8gb j's please try for mid range gaming and more than enough for most people
4gb is still perfectly fine for the average user, especially now days where Windows and other OS's are far better at RAM management and access to page files is quick as shit with NVMe storage

8gb is plenty for mid range gaming*
I deserve that for being a dumb phone poster

The more RAM you have the more of it Windows will use, until another program needs it

i'm running Winders with a couple virtual machines (one for webdev, one for more private/shady shit) + adobes and whatnot and i'm considering at least as a cheap sollution to put in a reasonably fast PCIE 4x 255GB SSD and allocate the entire thing for Winders 10 swap file? so i have something to cling on when im running out of ram. it's more than half as cheap as upgrading to 32GB DDR3 (4x 8GB).

what do you think guise?

Just use an NVMe or PCIe SSD as the boot drive and Windows will sort it out by itself

Windows uses around 1 GB on its own if you have 4. And it somehow makes do with just 1 total if you've bought a shitty tablet PC. It sucks in its bloat if it needs to.

>i'm running Winders with a couple virtual machines (one for webdev, one for more private/shady shit)
That virtual guest is not private at all when the host OS is Windows, you stupid waste of oxygen. Not that it matters, since the "shady" things you do it in probably consist of join trap porn Discord servers and browsing the Hidden Wiki in Tor, you dumb faggot. Even if you were to use GNU/Linux or BSD as the host OS, you would still have a ring -3 hardware backdoor if you're using an Intel chipset from the last decade or any AMD chipset made in the last 5 years or so. Look up the Intel ME and AMD PSP and cry, kid.

>what do you think guise?
Lurk more or go back to Sup Forums, you insufferable moron.
