how is VR for just general desktop productivity use? I was thinking of buying a cheap headset and using it as a replacement monitor. I wouldn't do any actual VR gaming with it. Would it work with just integrated graphics?

Considering you need something strong enough to hit 90htz so you don't throw up, no.

on microsofts website it says the Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 meets the requirements. I'd be using a 8700k.

Hello.
I'm female.
Do you guys think you can be satisfied with SEX by using VR?
If so, VR will be a hero for sexual victims, I guess...

I've got an oculus and with big screen desktop its ok, however it really isn't feasible due to the resolution. I have to practically make the screen like 80 inches and bring it up to my face in order to actually be able to see what's going on. The pimax 8k headset would probably be way better but that's just about all I can think of that makes what you're looking for feasible. The tech just isn't there yet aka the story of VR so far.

And what I mean by this is like just doing productivity things i.e. typing something up, coding, etc.

well are there head mounted displays that just act as a regular monitor with no VR stuff that would look normal? I didn't see any on amazon.

I honestly don't know but to be fair, it sounds like a waste at least to me. The appeal of VR for what you're looking for lies in that one can sit in space with a headset on and watch a movie. Outside of that you're honestly just better off with a nice monitor, friendo. Those HMD's you're talking about are not popular for a reason when you really think about it. I don't see how they'd be better than a VR headset but if you're willing to try it then its all you pal

Keyboards and mice are designed with precision in mind. Human hands aren't. Browsers are designed for precise controls, and are really hard to use if you don't have that.

>Would it work with just integrated graphics?
Maybe? You need at least a GTX970 or greater. Some games work with a GTX960, but for the most part you need a 970 or better.

i see it was a bad idea. thanks

Regarding the VR headset that utilize a phone, I have few questions...
1. IPS LCD or OLED?
2. What's the minimum needed pixel density?

The resolution isn't high enough to read text at regular size at arm's length. It won't be this good for some time, there's some promise with drawing and cad apps like photoshop or solidworks since there's such little reading, and what text does exist can be blown up.

You need at least 4k per eye to comfortably read text. Wait for a few more years.

this

Some people use VR to watch stuff. You can do shit like laying flat in bed and watch animu with the HMD on.
Current gen res is too low for small text reading but it will come. Also consider that HMDs get uncomfortable after say 2 hours

What if I want to just get off on POV porn?

360° is a meme, haven't tried it though.
Spending money on fapping equipment is kind of pathetic.

Shit res, uncomfortable after an hour.

If you care about reading text, don't use a VR headset.

VR is for video games and movies. Also, I doubt your computer can support it

I've never used any form of VR other than a virtual boy so excuse my idiocy but could someone explain why reading text is apparently a problem with VR headsets? 1440x1440 seems like more than enough pixels for text so what am I misunderstanding?

The lenses are warping it and you are really close to the screen. Todays gen VR has a clearly visible pixel grid and small text is hard to read.
The more you get out of the central spot of the lens/screen the more warped it is and therefor harder to read.

I have used Google Cardboard, Gear VR, Playstation VR, and now Oculus Rift. Reading small text up close, like tiny text is blurry. I don't know why it does this, but I have experienced it.

Put your nose up to your screen, and you'll see why. This is basically the distance you're away from it with a VR headset. Added to that you'll have lens distortion which is compensated by software, though not perfectly, and lastly chroma when you move your eyes instead of your head to look at things.

Tits or gtfo

Tell that to any woman you meet cuckboy.

Would the Ryzen 2 APU be good enough for VR

The resolution is just too low for reading lots of text. Unless you plan on doing everything in an 80x80 text editor don't bother.

Idk about cardboard but if you guys have ever received freight shipments using layered fibreboard that shit is basically as rigid as a hard plastic. Definitely en97gh to make a pc case out of

I bought the Rift just to determine productivity potential. Had it for a week, and while the games were fun(especially Onward VR), the potential for productivity is very limited in its current state. Virtual Desktop text is too blurry and gave me a headache after more than 20 minutes of use. The screen door is just too obvious still.

But thats not my biggest gripe. The worst aspect for me was the singular focal plane, which I knew about going in but just wanted to see how bad it was. I suspect the single focal plane was the main source of eye strain.

To sum it up, I think the productivity potential for VR and AR can only be reached once lightfield displays are standard. We simply require multiple focal planes for this to be practical. Im pretty pumped for the Magic Leap dev kit, terminals all over my fuckin house.

Oh, by the way. Returned the Rift in less than a week.

Just get one of these

oculus is pure shit by nowadays standards
>oculus rift: 1MP per eye
>samsung odyssey: 2.5 MP per eye
>pimax 8k: 8MP per eye (if they ever deliver as promissed)

would still prefer the vive over the odyssey in the moment because of tracking and compatibillity
