/sqt/ - stupid questions thread

previous thread: Will anyone please tell me why "Everything" produces ass thumbnails unless they're shortcuts? I was recommended this as an explorer search replacement a few sqts ago but asked about this too late for help from the same dude I guess. Also is there really no way to enable using this as an explorer replacement? I'm not seeing an index thumbnails option, nor an option to even goddamn open a result folder internally on double click, much less do so without loading all subfolders. Spoonfeed me an explorer replacement that indexes thumbnails please and thank you.

So I used ddrescue on a dying hard drive and am viewing the log with ddrescueview to see where the bad sectors are. Does anyone know how to check if any files exist in those bad sectors?

reposting

maybe it's a stupid question but how would you go about scraping images/webms from a thread but instead of using the unixtimestamp one to save it you get and use the original filename that the poster used?
Can you do it with something like wget? like
wget -P directory -nd -r -l 1 -H -D i.4cdhn.org -A jpg threadurl

wasn't meant to be a explorer replacement. Best use case is to pair it with launchy and make queries with a couple of shortcuts

are you using f.lux?

What's a good site to buy used components? Preferably Canadian to avoid import fees. I checked the wiki and didn't find an answer.

I am but I've been using f.lux for years and this hasn't happened.

F.lux.

check settings, latest update was fucking shit up randomly. Had some problems with a couple of games

...

no problem, I was going nuts with a game randomly quitting and going back to desktop and it did because a game, fps overlay (from the game) and nu f.lux don't get along.

Everything is not an explorer replacement. It's a really good replacement for the search functionality.
Previews always show in full size here. They are only scaled down to fit if necessary. I'm using Windows 10.

>index thumbnails
What is that supposed to do?

I have some videos I want to burn to a DVD. Is there a decent program I can use to make a simple menu on the DVD when I put it in a standard player? Like just a list of the files when I out put the disc in

D-Link DNS-320l (2 bays, supposedly meh software)
or
Synology Ds115j (only 1 bay, supposedly good software)

Is there a way to make Freesync work on an NVIDIA GPU?

What actually changes on my monitor when I turn Freesync on or off on my monitor's menu? I thought it was just a software option.

Is Ivy Bridge still worth as desktop processor?
t. poorfag

Hey thanks for the reply.

Thumbnails really aren't showing full size for me, but I'm on Windows 7. I even reloaded the program and the same preview size as depicted in the thread pic remained.

I just wanted to index thumbnails (in at least arbitrary folders) in order to make browsing through the program instead of explorer faster. At the moment I hate browsing explorer when I could browse on my tablet, instead, since thumbnails are indexed there.

I actually saw a Hydrus rec in the same sqt I mentioned in the OP, and I'm considering it, but I don't know, Everything is almost good enough but it lacks features due to program philosophy I guess.

synology software is better user

Depends on price but as long it is unlocked.
user build a computer, they last 4-6 years till you need to upgrade.

When you say index you mean cache.
Explorer already has a thumbnail cache.

If you want make autistic search queries while fapping then hydrus is a better options.

That's I'm trying to do.
I want to replace my PoS Macbook Pro with a proper computer, but the prices for new parts here (Chile) are excesive.

Please

>Chile
Yeah you are in the corner of the tech world.
Still, a ivy bridge I5 or i7 is good enough if you plan to get a low-mid end GPU for a proper build.
Not something good, not a proper build but it will work.
Try to replace the PSU with a EVGA or Seasonic PSU if you can since it is probably really old.
Also repaste it too.

Also look for a used Thinkcentre.
While Thinkpads != Thinkcentre desktops when it comes to quality they are really cheap and you can get a 4th gen I5 for $150-$170 even in chile.

Sorry, I know I got my terminology wrong- I even saw you used "preview" when I said "thumbnail", and on some level I knew yours was correct but I never corrected myself, still. So yeah, I think you're right.

I just mostly want to be able to scroll through things quickly. I hate how my porn folder is unuseable with explorer given that you open it and proceed to not see shit, because you have to wait for it to load. The folder even sorting by date takes too long to even bother using that as a Windows sort order on a folder that large.

I could benefit from Hydrus, in fact, consider myself on it, already. But I was wondering how I might be able to open a folder and have all thumbnails cached already, so I don't have to wait on it. If Hydrus is the answer then I suppose there's nothing else.

By the way, Everything shows a lot of things I don't recoginze in my C:\Users\cookie (my username) folder. I don't see this in explorer. The bottom two are mine, but have you any idea what this stuff is? Thanks for the patience either way.

Do you know if some model is at least hackintosh friendly?
Yes, I wanna to do hackintosh. The Macbook Pro is a PoS with nice screen, but I really love macOS for some reason.

Why are some CJK characters anti-aliased and others are not? And how do I fix this?
I understand that some characters may be missing in the default font, the hiragana character "も" is rendered well in the tweet and like shit in the comments.
Using Google Chrome on Linux.

>sorting by date takes too long
It's looking for date metadata inside of files. That's the default when the folder has a lot of pictures.
You can click on Sort by -> More and add date created or date modified.

>any idea what this stuff is
That's where the registry for your user is saved. I don't think I have ever seen that many files though.
You can see them in explorer by enabling hidden files and disabling hiding of system files.

Sorry i cant help you with that, but they should be compatible, do a little research about it first.
Another user might know, but for now that is the only way i know you can get a cheap computer with good specs in chile.

Thanks mate.

test

Apparently they work.

I'm leaning to the Elitedesks too. They even have a Github with DSDT patches for hackintosh.

Thanks, and thanks for the date tip- I definitely notice a difference between my arbitrarily choosing "Date modified" from your distinction as a test, which sorted in seconds, verses "Date" which still hasn't sorted after minutes upon minutes...

Elitedesks are good too, but usually more pricey in the US and MX, and usually they don't include the OEM screen.
But if you replace the UPS then it doesn't matter, what changes between any desktop brand is the UPS they use, and HP is known for using low quality parts on anything that isnt from their enterprise stuff.

Is there any way of getting Amazon prime to cast to my tv using my Chromecast without buying a fire stick ?

Posting this in case somebody wants it.

Yeah I was seriously considering doing it myself but was scared it wasn't tech-related enough. But sourcing is technology, right?

what settings do i need for ublock origin so i dont see the ads at the bottom of threads?

Sure, why not. I just figured that I went through the effort already, so why not share?

Why does my mouse "skip"

>I'm late but who cares
i don't care, but i did go to sleep before your reply, so maybe you'll care
>I know but is it a good idea?
it's fine, they'll be separate cards (no crossfire/sli) though
>Yeah, well Windows is asking me to before I can see it, which is annoying. It does this with every drive that seems "corrupt."
that's just windows making assumptions for you as usual
ugh, reminds me of a previous job where i was tasked to extract video from a dead DVR... but not before my boss (head of IT) plugged it into his windows laptop and clicked "initialize"
it went from a possibly simple job to to a "good luck with that" job
ended up having to just doctor some older video screenshots to change their timestamp, i'm not sure if their use of these were legal or not
>my younger brother with extreme behavioral issues broke both of them. The flash drive by just shaking the comp somehow, and the HDD by slamming the laptop it was in to the ground.
that sucks, might want to look into shock-mounting his hdd's or get an ssd (which are much more shock-resistant)
have you tried making an image using ddrescue from a linux livecd? if that goes nowhere, and you aren't willing to pay for a specialist, then just give it up, and remember to keep backups of important things

check your mouse's optical area for dust/lint, as well as your mousepad

I was going to ask, thanks.

my guess is it uses the windows icon cache for faster previewing where it can

Well it don't work, ever. Someone earlier said previews are only scaled down to fit if necessary, and that they were using W10. I'm on W7 and I have never seen that behavior when previewing a regular image.

Is there a Sup Forums recommended vpn?

I saw nord offers 2 year sub for 70$

Thanks, I'll look into it!

Which is better for getting started in hardware hacking: Raspberry Pi type boards or just using a laptop with USB SOIC EEPROM programmers/USB to TTL?

what the fuck is my home folder called on android? i sshd into my phone from my desktop but i only see the micro sd storage.

found it nvm

what's the fastest sd card out right now?

Sandisk Extreme Pro 128GB.

There is the Extreme plus U3 and Samsung Pro+ U3 but they are 3-5MB/s slower.

I'm trying to stream an online radio to my FM radio through a raspberry pi but I can't get the streaming to work.
Streaming a .wav just works fine but I can't stream from the links or the m3u and pls files.
Could somebody show me the right direction please?

Maybe ask here

Or

I got a 1080p laptop and idk why but its hurting the shit out if my eyes. I have the refresh speed set as high as it will go (60hrz) but it just feels so sharp and bright. Even black looks too bright on the lowest brightness and I have to tone it down even lower with an extension. Is it just my eyes? Most sites say I need to set my refresh rate higher but it only goes up to 60, or that I just need to sit further away but its a laptop so I can't move all that far from it

Try f.lux or something - my laptop is so blue and bright it hurts my eyes but f.lux makes everything all good again.

Let me guess, HP Matte screen?

I'd rather fix it through the settings instead of having to install something but I will check this out also.
you got it. I actually may return it 2bh and get an asus

Its their shitty backlight, the display itself is fine, the exact name of this problem is PWM backlight eyestrain.
What happens is that shitty LEDs flickers at really fast speeds which damage your eyes.

Led sounds exactly what it fucking is
anyway to turn that shit off? how could they think this was a good idea

test again

you could set it to full brightness

No, its an array of leds behind your display that bright it up, without them your screen would be pure black.
It gets worse as you decrease the screen brightness.
Its not a good idea at all, but its waaay cheaper in comparison to proper LED backlight.

Recommendation, never buy HP laptops.
Ask anyone that fixes HP laptops and will tell you the same, they are low quality, with planned obsolecense (Whole DVx, Gx, Envy, etc lines are like this except Elitebooks) and more.

PWM is simpler to implement, just a chip that switched the led's on and off with a duty cycle relative to your brightness level
and most people aren't affected by them

-- also, a pwm backlight synced to your refresh rate actually has an /advantage/ as well, it can improve motion quality

Just to show what I'm going through, heres a picture through a shitty cell phone camera. Notice the painful contrast between the black and the creamish gray in the tabs. This is on the lowest brightness btw.

Also theres a really high pitch wirrr noise when I move my mouse with headphones plugged in.
yeah I'm going to return it within the next couple of days. came with incompatible software as well that caused screen flicker, and one of the first mandatory updates caused 2 drivers to stop working (keyboard and mouse, go figure)

uploaded the wrong image

>Those ads
user you might want to install uBlock Origin.

ublock doesn't block those ads anymore

It does, the filter got introduced 8 hours later they were introduced.
Sup Forums.org##script:inject(abort-current-inline-script.js, String.fromCharCode)

awesome thanks user

It is on by default now, just click update filters, or add it manually.
If you ever experience ads showing again always click "Update filters" in the settings.

Just get rid of the computer, you shouldnt have one

I bought a gaming laptop for the first time, with NVIDIA graphic card and stuff. Anyone has a link which explains how to uses well all of its functions?

Are there any good 2tb micro sd cards out there? I have a lgv30+ and wanna get a big sd card.

2TB doesn't exist, we haven't reach a density small enough to create 2TB MicroSDs, biggest is 400GB from Sandisk.

I can't help you, so sorry for wasting your time, but 2tb micro sd card???? As in additional storage for phones, tablets????

A few months ago I randomly came across some dude saying his shit became unreadable, Window wanted to format it or something, and across multiple replies he was affirmed multiple times that those things just go poof sometimes. I wouldn't put even 20 gigs on such a thing...

As another posted said, this is not a windows explorer replacement.

It is for searching, not browsing files/folders. It is very fast because it simply indexes the names of files/folders and some basic metadata. It does not truly index, as in it does not search and index the contents of files. For example if you have a word doc, it will not be searching text inside of it, only the documents filename.

128gigs is fine
you just have to avoid getting chink shit that lie in the firmware, making the computer think that there is more storage than is actually there

Oh, I see. Thank you for the patient response. So there are limits to what it can do without compromising its effectiveness.

I guess my main annoyance then is only that I seemingly cannot even browse as if it replaced Windows explorer. I'm able to manually fetch paths, and make them their own filter, with even their own keyboard shortcut. But that is such a hassle. I can't see myself ever wanting to close the program, but opening explorer from it makes my eyebrows twitch.

By the way do you have any explorer replacement recs to throw my way? I asked a few sqts ago how to replace the Windows "Move File" dialog box, to remove the "Move and Replace" option and was recommended "Far Manager", but I don't know if there's a standard one for these.

I think I'm going to get a 1440p monitor. Should I buy a 24 inch or 27 inch? I want it mainly for programming and artfagging. Not gaming.

What tech can I use to keep my feet warm? Socks don't cut it and I don't want to deal with drying out my feet from a warm water bath constantly.

27 inch 1440p monitors have really good DPI that doesn't make you strain your eyes.

can I mix and match RAM? Like if I had an old 1gig stick lying around could I put it in with an 8gig and get 9 gigs? Or would the smaller sized stick bottleneck everything

as long as they're the same type, yes (for example, DDR3)
if one is slower (say DDR3-1066 and DDR3-1333), it will also work, but both will run at the slowest common speed

Thanks buddy

slippers with wool inside?

What's an average level of fragmentation on a hard drive? I'm sitting at 38% right now, and I feel like that's probably way too high.

Thx user

0%, unless you're using windows

I am

I'm sorry

So what's the answer?

there's no "average level", it depends entirely on your usage
ntfs is terrible for fragmentation
you can do a file-level clone of a disk and end up with more fragmentation on the new disk, it doesn't try at all

0-1%? I mean, Windows 7 and up have built-in automatic defragementation, so you should never reach 38% unless you still use Vista or XP

I'm on 7 It says the last time it ran the defragmenter four days ago, though. Could the defragmenting be failing somehow?

Depends on what software you are using to read it.
Windows should say 0% for properly defragmented drives, but other software will commonly read higher values (5-15%)
