So, what strategy are we using? We could base it off of an existing chatbot, but that seems awfully limited. If we are using modern machine learning techniques we need a huge source of data to train from. Any suggestions?

It's better to focus on something that can actually be done with Sup Forums resources. Maybe open source Live2D, or waifu hand hondling simulator for VR or whatever. There is nice project like this being developed on /jp/ right now

We're not making strong AI here, just a slightly better chat bot. I don't see anything impossible about it.

Right, so here's an idea. We don't have enough brains/motivation to make something revolutionary. The only thing we have over other people trying to do the same thing is lots of time and endless autism. My thought is make a primarily expert knowledge system.

4 part system:
1. A basic text interpreter that can follow "rules" . Rules are a really simple set of instructions, such as "if number of nouns = 1, set noun as subject". We'd need to develop some basic scripting language, but keep it as limited as possible. Rules are primarily expert knowledge, ie things we input manually. We can worry about automating the process using machine learning once we have a decent set of rules to compare against.

2. An internal "storyboard". The processed input from the parser is passed to the next layer as a collection of nodes, essentially an an object, or multiple objects, with modifiers attached. For example, if the input passed was "the dog ran fast" the object passed to the second layer would represent "dog", and have "running fast" attached to it. The goal of the second layer is to act as a de-facto memory. Nodes stored in the second layer can be referenced by rules in the first, the goal is to keep track of what's happening to things the chatbot is being told and respond "intelligently".
The more "frames" of input back we keep, the better the memory. Maybe we can screw with storing it to disk or using lookup tables or something later for some persistent memory, but that's out of the scope for the moment.

3. Response generator. More rules created by expert knowledge here. This is what we'd swap out to make different characters. We use knowledge from layer 2's past and current frames, in addition to generated emotion values to create a set of response nodes. Emotions are generated based on weights given to connections from objects. If the character is meant to like dogs for example, we might have a negative emotional connection between "dieing" and "dog".

4. The output layer. Depending on how we set up the first layer we can potentially use the input rules to help determine output, but otherwise this will be more brute force. In effect, we use more rules to turn the response nodes into text that makes sense.

Once we have enough data input by hand we could start generating rules using genetic algorithms + supervised learning, and even automatically make generalizations of rules using statistics.

All anyone who wanted to contribute to the project would need to do is learn a shitty scripting language and throw a few new rules in any of the three parts.
