does debian support secure boot?

debian supports everything
>wiki.debian.org/SecureBoot

I use both Debian and Arch, but for different purposes.

i fucked my system to shit trying to install proprietary nvidia drivers and switched to void.

i liked it up until that point

But i am
It just werks on my machine

apt is absolutely disgusting
and it is filled with redditors sweaty

For my first distro, I'm loving it.

>systemd
inb4 devuan

Because It's shit. The repertoires are poorly maintained and hardware that works on other distros doesn't on Debian and nol it's not fixed by going to the unstable version. Stuff just isn't where it's suppose to be. Things are removed from the repos arbitrarily the wiki is extremely out of date. Porgrams have names in the repos they're not suppose to have. The whole thing is a cluster fuck. I consider debian less usable then gentoo or arch. It's the worst distro currently being maintained at the moment by a wide margin. Fedora is the superior free distro. It's bleeding edge with a great package manager and good repositories. Fedora kde is the best distro I've ever used.

systemd betrays the Unix philosophy

Repost time!

Arch has never been a minimalist distribution. Splitting packages is rare compared to other distributions, and dependencies aren't made optional whenever possible. Arch has *never* been minimalist... a Linux kernel with every module available and every feature enabled at least when there's no non-bloat related cost, feature-packed/complex GNU tools, nearly all optional features enabled across all the packages, etc.

>pacman is fast but not safe, it tends to break shit and config protection is implemented in a terrible way
>there is no official process to verify that a package is stable within the distro, in other distros a lot of packages are in a testing repo despite that specific package's developer claiming it to be stable on its own, because it might not be stable within the environment of a specific distro
>a lot of AUR packages pull from upstream, which means they could be very unstable
>(arch vs gentoo related) arch users complain about muh compile time when it comes to gentoo, while in fact they compile a lot of AUR packages themselves, namely the *-git packages that pull the source from a git repo
>but it gets even better: they only compile a handful of packages, and those not being libraries mostly, the self-compiled packages get linked against precompiled libraries from a different setup (e.g. different optimization levels), which can then cause even more instability because it's a clusterfuck of unequal shit
>arch uses (((systemd))) and switching to something else is hard
>apparently the vim package on arch pulls in X, so if you want to have a fancy terminal text editor on a headless server, you to install a shit ton of GUI stuff you'll never need nor use
>maintainer told the guy who complained to just symlink vi to vim (vi is inferior)

what init does arch use again? :^)

arch is the reddit distro, half of /r/unixporn is on its dick

you were doing great until you started shilling kde

I am having troubles compiling i3-gaps on it. (would seriously appreciate a script or something) other than that it's actually the most comfy distro I've tried

how does half the web servers run it comfortably then?

The names are different from Arch because the packages are split up more.

I am on my server

I have used Debian in the past, when Ubuntu initially rolled out Unity. Using Ubuntu right now but may consider Debian VS Arch in the future, leaning toward Debian.
I think if you're a Ubuntu/Mint/etc user who isn't happy with something or another, Debian is there and it's stable and it's fine. Aside from the satisfaction of knowing you're using such a big and important distro, I don't get the special appeal. It all mostly looks the same when you set up your DE and start shitposting.

Refracta Distro ChIp'n In.

well for a freetard, debian might be an attractive choice due to having a kernel with no binary blobs, and keeping the nonfree shit in a containment repo.

check your PID 1 retard

>Fedora is the superior free distro. It's bleeding edge
I use Debian because I want the opposite of that

used debian some, mint, ubuntu, and just debian. found that fedora is just my favorite and best for my needs. Sometimes arch too

If you have Debian unstable and you have apt-listbugs installed then there is nothing to really worry about.

(...unless you rely on proprietary nvidia drivers, but that goes for a lot of other distros as well.)

I use to think that too but shit just works on Fedora. I've never had a distro that actual worked with suspend and had proper power management on a laptop outside of Fedora. Every other distro freezes the fuck up. I can leave my Fedora laptop suspended for days. Bleeding edge doesn't always mean unstable.
It's one sentence. I like kde. Gnome is good too. I hate windows rip off UIs. So the other desktop managers aren't on the table.
I have no clue. I tried using it for a media server once and it was such a frustrating experience. I think most servers are running Fedora and Ubuntu now anyway. Debian continues to exist because a lot of superior distros are based on it. I wouldn't even say that about Ubuntu anymore. They're basically codependent at this point. They contribute a lot to each other.

i bettor type one emerge nodejs than bother about jessie wheezy whatever the shit then install through nodesource

>Bleeding edge doesn't always mean unstable.
I've had no issues with suspending my laptop. But I know for damn sure I've avoided a bunch of issues because Debian tracks Firefox ESR instead of the mainline regular-release FF, though. By the time I have to deal with all that Webextentions bullshit with ESR 60 people like you will already have done the heavy lifting and solved most of the problems I'm going to run into. That's a blatant example but you could make similar arguments for a bunch of other common software. I'm just not interested in dealing with my system changing every six months.

GNU is Not Unix. If you care about UNIX and it's retarded way of doing things, install a BSD distribution, download HTML pages with curl and read them with pico.

Debian is not a Libre distro. It keeps nonfree packages in the free repos such as Firefox, ffmpeg and Audacity.

nah but its close enough, f a m

sudo apt install linux-firmware

>shit repos compared to arch
Debian has more packages than Arch even when you include the AUR. Debian has ~57000 packages while Arch+AUR only adds up to ~43000. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions
>autistically complains about firmware
Debian separates nonfree software into a separate repo because they actually believe in free software. You can get a version of the install cd with nonfree firmware on it for installing on things that need it.

Firefox, ffmpeg and audacity are all free software. They may deal with some patent encumbered formats but that doesn't make the software nonfree.

Firefox is the only one you kinda got right

Sorry looks like some nob gave it a new name and the wiki is 200 years out of date.

>Debian has more packages than Arch even when you include the AUR
Yeah but there low quality out of date trash.

>I'm just not interested in dealing with my system changing every six months.
Thats fair but I'd rather use Ubuntu for a stable long term release.

Devuan is admittedly shit, for being outdated as hell.
Look up Antix, it's systemd-free Debian-based distribution. Very lightweight and just werks, don't honestly know why it's as unknown as it is. It's real good.

Put non-free and contrib to your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Because I'm using Gentoo.

>apt-get
>Dead founder was a cynical loony and killed himself
>fuckton of clone variants, including Brickbuntu which has been bricking various branded computers and laptops since 17.10

Didn't they recently drop support for non systemd tho?

Most of them aren't low quality. Also the AUR is filled with trash and half of it is just scripts to pull the latest git version of a package already in the repo. Debian packages are only out of date in the stable repo so just use testing or sid if you need newer packages.

>pacman
>a reference to a virgin yellow ball that eats dots and dies when he comes into contact with chad ghosts

Where are the proofs? Provide examples for everything you just claimed.

I need up-to-date packages and the 'unstable' release is far too unstable. Still use it for my torrentbox tho

Gee, it's almost like there should be a version in the middle of those that provides newer stuff than stable, but not as bleeding edge as unstable. Maybe we should call it Testing or something?

>systemd is replaced with init in 2 commands
source?

Seconded. They cant even be bothered to create a stable api for developers to use apt/dpkg. I mean, even RPM has one. Also, tried to start contributing on IRC but dpkg is a brainletchild of limited folk who "have plans for it". Fuck off.

Your very limited opinions about your experience holds no weight.
>i try debian once and it sux

Hes obviously lying. Unless he chains:

apt install svsvinit...; override inittab; fix policy kid; fix grub

Hes a shill

But user I do

I am, just installed a Debian chroot on my SBC the other day

Until the bug fix you desperately need sits upstream for 6 months

Whew lad. You've been gone from Debian for a while. Maybe its best that you stay with Fedora - god help them.

Any debian variants that offer sysvinit out of the box? Might switch then.

antix

also best logo

>>i try debian once and it sux
I didn't try it once. I've used debian multiple times. It's complete trash.

My Mother-in-law gave me her old AIO Toshitba (LX815-D1210) and I'd like to fuck around with Debian on it. What are the odds of the included Wireless adapter working? No access to Ethernet in my garage where I'd like it.

What's a PID 1 retard?

>again, no reasons just baseless opinion

I gave my reasons. The repos are shit. Packages aren't where there suppose to be. They mislabeled and removed for absolutely no reason at completely random times. It is by far the worst distro I've ever had the displeasure of using.

I am.
I installed the current "stable" version, but was a little disappointed it still had packages with broken defaults.

I thought "stable" meant "it just werks".

Thats a different guy
t fedora user

Your very limited opinions about your experience holds no weight.

Examples?

Thats my opinion. OP asked why I don't use debian becuase I thinks it's fucking shit.

projectM was looking for fonts in the wrong place and kept crashing.

Also, the intel driver is glitchy, shaking/fuzzing the image when moving between windows/fullscreen/taskbar/etc (very) randomly.

oh but I am, on (almost) all my devices

because the bright beautiful future of gnu is finally here

>future of gnu
does it use the Hurd?

not yet, but it certainly is part of their ultimate goals and master plan

Last time I used Debian was when the pi 1 came out though it was decent until last week when I put it on my server. Definitely one of my favourite distros the default gnome is aids though I'll probably setup open fox or just get xfce for top tier comfy

But I am. It's one of the few independent, self-sustaining, community managed, free software distros out there. Apt is great, its software repositories are great, stable is great and headache free for many years.
