I bought an used Toshiba C660-1P3 from ebay with an 500 GB harddrive and wanted to use it with linux. The seller said that this laptop just "couldn't start into windows" and he didn't know where the problem was.
TL;DR I removed the HDD and discovered that the HDD was defective and had many bad sectors. After I put my (working) HDD into the laptop I realized that it doesn't even start my HDD. Bios bootup works fine and booting via USB isn't a problem.

A motherboard replacement is more expensive than the actual laptop. I bought mine for 100€ and the replacement costs "just" like 160€.
Is there any way to fix the controller? How even is it possible to damage the controller?

silver lining: this is a relatively cheap lesson, showing you that you've got insufficiently good imagination (i.e. ability to model risks) - profit (good case scenario): only a damaged HDD/erased windows - loss of investment (ok-ish case scenario): enough damage that repair is time/money-wise not worth it - worse case scenario: more damage than investment: during your efforts, you manage to damage other components, fuck up your electric installation, start a fire, etc - etc

If the HDD controller really is fucked but you can still boot from USB, you could solder an USB to SATA adapter to the USB port from the inside, and use that to boot off of your hard drive, assuming you can squeeze all that shit in.
