Why are there over 9000 gnu/linux distros again?

Why are there over 9000 gnu/linux distros again?

Because fuck you, that's why.

>people have options
>I don't understand what people pick an option
This world.

Why are there 9000 brands of cereal?

The kernel itself and base packages are typically all the same and universally used. Distros are a collective set of utilities based on a specific demographic. There are over 9000 disros because there are over 9000 ways to use linux.

Can't there just be a distro that can do all or most of the ways though? Why does it have to be so specialized towards one particular use?

...

Because you can't have chocolate taste and strawberry taste and no sugar and sugar in the same cereal.
Are you saying that's what Linux is like? It's impossible to do A without eliminating B and C?

Because anyone can make one.

There are distros that can do all or most of the ways. Debian, Ubuntu, SUSE, Fedora... The ones that are funded by corporations. The only issue there is that they are bloated (they try and do too much) and they aren't preferrable for less popular-more specific use cases.

Its called Ubuntu

Freedom, freedom of choice.

>"lol existing package managers suck imma make a new distro"
>"lol default packages are shit imma make a new distro"
>"lol ugly logo imma make a new distro"
>"lol retarded compile options imma make a new distro"
>"lol retarded name imma make a new distro"
etc.

Because the vast majority of the active community can't (or can't be arsed to) make proper software, so instead they waste time tinkering with packages and duplicating efforts for no real benefit.

Choice! And so there is no real standard, it will never catch on....

But it isn't tho. You can make a pentest distro out of something like Slackware...don't know why you would want to do that, but you can.

Because a distro can't be in-depth and easy, it cant be a desktop distro and a pentest distro, it can't be binary and source based also... BUT they also can be...but specialization is always better than generalization. Its not like its hard to just install a distro for a specific purpose.

You know that story about how an infinite number of monkeys typing on typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare?

Well, now you know the GNU/Linux plan for creating a successful distro.

...

Freedom, motherfucker!
Do you speak it?!

Because Linus wanted that way. And he can't prosecute fuckers who does shitty distros.
