I tried all of the internet suggested solutions. Been here for 6 hours trying to fix what should not even be an issue.

I use Fedora with XFCE on my desktop and Windows 10 LTSB on my laptop. Works on my machines.

It's probably because I'm using a GTX 1080 and nvidia don't expect people with anything newer than a 700- series gpu to be running poorinux

Theres your problem. Stop using distros that are utterly worthless garbage and you won't have this problem. You'll need the Nvidia drivers for any pascal gpu so use a distro that comes with proprietary drivers like Ubuntu. So it'll be one click to turn them on. For distros that aren't trash like Debian it's usually just copying and pasting a few commands into a terminal.

It is Ubuntu that I have installed.
A live boot of to 'try' ubuntu works fine. But once its actually installed the resolution is locked at 720p
