Keep it up OP!

Why is there mayonnaise on her leg?

Still using my trusty Nexus 5. Running yesterday's nightly of Lineage 14.1. Comfy af.

it dripped off her fish sandwich

It's true to what they say, the Nexus 5 was the last good Nexus phone. All are now plagued with issues and even more with how unstable 8.0 and 8.1 is.

How does user justify buying a smartphone? What do you use it for? I am just out of usecases for such device. Yes, if you have ADHD on Sup Forums you can easily browse it on phone, but needless to remind you that medium smartphone (like xiaomi or meizu) costs as much as 2-3 thinkpads (x220) from ebay, and thinkpads are damn good investment. Playing games? You can do it on thinkpad or PC. Watching videos while in bus or metro? Just sit down and open your laptop. Listening to music? Buy sansa pro. Wanna call someone? You might buy those $10 dollars cellphone. I am not judging anyone, I am just curious for the unique usecases for smartphones.
And there is privacy issue as well. You can libreboot your x200 and have absolutely free device, while android phone is a giant botnet inside your pocket.

Yup. On top of all of that, I bought this off ebay for $65 shipped.

It's a small device you can keep clipped to your belt and instantly access anywhere you are. I keep my todo list (todo.txt format, accessed through Simpletask Cloudless, available on F-Droid) and Commonplace Book (TiddlyWiki) to jot down thoughts and ideas, or to work down my list of todos while out and about, or at the store, etc.

It's an important principle of GTD (and many other organizational systems) to have your data capture device eon you at all times. And I agree with that. Because otherwise you won't eveer get around to entering something in your system "later" and eventually won't trust your system because it's all out of whack and then you will quit using it.

I also sync important files like KeePass, bookmarks, and whatever else I need across devices. This way I have access to them wherever I am. I also drop reading material in an appropriately named folder from desktop or wherever, and then if I find myself stuck somewhere for a while I have something to read, even without an internet connection.

In short, a smartphone is just a computer with a more limited interface, that is readily available. Now I wouldn't want to do serious work on one but I have laptops and desktop for that. Right tool for the job and all that.

Also you can mitigate a lot of the BS by using AOSP ROM like Lineage, and only free software from F-Droid. That doesn't eliminate the baseband issue however, but for that the Librem 5 is just around the corner. Or, you can use Replicant today although the hardware (s2, s3, etc.) is a bit dated (and IMO, underpowered) by now.

Smartphones are usually just to satiate select purposes whether it's social media, responding to emails, texting friends, listening to music, reading news, playing mobile games, taking photos, watching videos, or generally browsing the internet. The thing is flagships are designed to excel at all these features for a premium price. Once you've slummed it using a budget device you no doubt wanted more and tried a mid-range. Most people are happy with a mid-range but if you participate in all the thing things I listed plus more, then you want the power and reliability of a flagship.

Same response from the last thread, just a bit more thought.
>How does user justify buying a smartphone?
Convince
>What do you use it for?
Music, browsing, media, games

Fuck off

>I keep my todo list
I agree with todo lists, but wouldn't it be more "convinient" to sit down (even if you in the store), grab your laptop, open terminal, write tasks, and move on?
>I also sync important files like KeePass, bookmarks, and whatever else I need across devices
If you haven't had a smartphone you wouldn't need to sync files in the first place.
>I have something to read, even without an internet connection.
Having your laptop in a backpack with you solves that problem
> is just a computer with a more limited interface
Yes, but that's the point of limited computer in your pocket, then you can have fully operational system in your backpack for 1/3 of the price?

Hey /spg/. I'm shopping around for a new phone and I want one with VR. Mostly for porn if we're being honest, but I might play a game or two.

My carrier is Virgin Mobile, and they sell the Samsung Galaxy J7. My main question is what headset would be best? The Samsung Gear only lists the Galaxy S series as being compatible, but there's no mention of the J series anywhere.

Apologies if this a dumb question. Sup Forums isn't my homeboard.

There's a time and place for everything.

>more "convinient" to sit down (even if you in the store), grab your laptop, open terminal, write tasks, and move on?
not sure if srs
>Having your laptop in a backpack with you solves that problem
but phone clips to belt, much smaller, no need to carry a full backpack and laptop everywhere
>Yes, but that's the point of limited computer in your pocket, then you can have fully operational system in your backpack for 1/3 of the price?
Well it's a trade off, you are trading form factor for portability.

Maybe when Librem 5 comes out, you will finally see the light once you can have a fully GNU/Linux (not Android) smartphone OS. kek

kys

Anybody know of a Xiaomi phone that works with freedompop's att LTE bands in the us?

I do believe in free software and not being spied on, but the situation of having laptop in place of smartphone is inconvenient.
> You can have fully operational system in your backpack for 1/3 of the price?
Of course, I own a Thinkpad because it's a great unbeatable laptop. But replacing it is not practical, people go on in their everyday lives. Commuting to work and especially moving around for leisure, a busy person needs to be able to respond in a reasonable time to emergencies, family, and other contacts. I willing carry around this tracking device because I need it in order to continue my functioning outside my desk.
>Why not just bring the laptop with you?
Simply for the reason of not wanting to carry that weight, cowboy.

Smartphones are not leaving, if you care about spreading free software and hardware here you're wasting your time, instead focus on projects that are pushing for libre alternatives like the Librem phone, Postmarket OS, and Repilcant.
Spell it out

Now say please

wish this weeb faggot would stop making the OPs

please

seconding this and cant stand the lot of you

Are there security risks to running Xposed on your device. InstallGentoo made it sound very cautionary

Now give me a little kiss
What's your price range?
And you can't use VR on the J7, there's no gyroscope. I can't imagine that being enjoyable to watch videos where it doesn't track your movement

Tried checking willmyphonework.net/
But a lot are quite iffy with 4G LTE, even with some forum posts talking about its inconsistencies. Is there a reason why you have to use a Xiaomi phone?

So to sum things up, here is list of unique usecases for smartphones:
1.really small camera
2.gps and navigation
3.some phones can substitute high-end musical players
4.cell phone

is knockoff scratch resistant glass like xiaomeme uses softer/thinner then? i've had them bend out of shape over time so reflections get distorted.

why does my face look so messed up on smartphone camera? they make my nose and lips look huge and my hair look strange but when i look in a mirror it looks nothing like on the cameras.

We're used to seeing our self in a reflection that it looks odd when reading our faces in the way others see it.

I'm just interested in a good-ass chinkphone for less than $200.

How do people get phones carrier unlocked? Can you just contact the manufacturer?

What's a decent sub-300 USD smartphone that doesn't overheat and subsequently throttle? I don't care if it gets warm, I just don't want the damn thing overheating when I'm watching HD video or gaming during my long train rides.

Should I use SuperSU or LieneageOS?

if you already installed lineageos, you might as well use its root tool.

I'm asking if I should install LineageOS or use SuperSU on my Oreo instead.

You're asking if you should flash an entire customrom versus rooting your phone

Samsung galaxy a8 or Sony xperia xa2?

Oreo? Yeah, I'd stick with their own tool to keep it uniform. It really doesn't matter though as far as I know.

Who else /v20/ here? Running LineageOS with all the current updates.

Manufacturers have different methods to unlocking their phones. Look up the details.
The XA2 isn't even out for review, but from what I seen from hands on I'm not a fan of the changes. If you're on a budget it's probably going to sit on the 300 dollar range, but I would probably go with the a8.

All modern smartphones are fucking shit.
I own Xperia Z1 and it's a beautiful and decent phone, but it's so sold it's basically falling apart in my hands.

I'm thinking about buying a new flagman phone, but I look on the modern ones and all I see is shit.
Apple had removed literally everything from their phone, so all the functionality is locked inside their ecosystem.
Android phone manufacturers either follow Apple in their degenerate ideas and removes useful ports and features from their phones or just make some weird shit.
For example, I like my current Xperia so naturally, I thought about "upgrading" to the latest flagman in the Xperia series ... which has a 4k display for some fucking reason, zero battery life, and is overheating like crazy. Also, it doesn't come in purple.

What phone am I missing, user? I need that goddamn mini-Jack. I want good battery life. I want a decent camera. I want it to be powerful enough to run some simple games without stuttering, overheating like crazy, and draining all the battery in an hour.

redmi 5 plus

...

US name brand? You want a Note if money isn't a concern. Stick it in a rhinoshield and a skin and enjoy the best hardware android has to offer. Otherwise, a Moto G or E, depending on what you want out of a device.
If name brand isn't a concern, Huawei or Xiaomi phones are what you're looking for.

I wanna buy a phone with atleast 64gb what is the best phone for this at the moment?
buying from the netherlands
budget is over 1k so I guess anything goes

Will there be a Pixel 3?

My moto e finally died and now I'm using an old Samsung Note 2. How the fuck did Samsung make literally every single part of android worse? I want to throw this thing at the wall every time I use it. I fucking prefer iOS for fucks sake.

So Doogee is releasing its Mix 4. It's a slide phone, like Nokia 95 where the front camera, earpiece and other shit is accessible if you slide it down. The front is a full screen.

Last I heard about Doogee is it has very good cameras that are as good as the Zuk Z2 Pro.

Daily reminder to not buy Huawei phones outside of Europe otherwise you'll never get updates ever again. Just don't buy their shit.

>Last I heard about Doogee is it has very good cameras

Where did you hear this? They're known for dual camera phones with dummy cameras.

What's a decent sub-300 USD smartphone that doesn't overheat and subsequently throttle? I don't care if it gets warm, I just don't want the damn thing overheating when I'm watching HD video or gaming during my long train rides.

>dual camera phones with dummy cameras
the absolute state of chinkphones

What are good reasons to buy an iphone 8?

What's the best keyboard to use for Android?

ur gay

Doing the OP 3 root guide some user said, I followed the steps, but for some reason when I'm in the Terminal Emulator and enter "su" it just says "system/bin/sh: su: not found"

What am I doing wrong? The instructions don't really specify anything else.

Small phone with good camera and imessage.

>medium smartphone (like xiaomi or meizu) costs as much as 2-3 thinkpads (x220) from ebay, and thinkpads are damn good investment.

my redmi 4x only cost me about 160usd including shipping and tax

>Just sit down and open your laptop
>sit down
Do you have a job, user? Have you ever been on the metro during peak hours?
Also, I can play simple games during my 15-minutes walk to home, as well as reading shit on the Internet.
There's also a lot of smartphone-relying shit in the modern world - QR codes and what's not.

I bought my Galaxy S5 for the same price I bought my T420. I bought both of them about a year ago.
You might think you need more than an S5, but you really don't.
Also if you're worried about the botnet you can flash LineageOS on it, just make sure to not flash gapps along with it.

What's a decent sub-300 USD smartphone that doesn't overheat and subsequently throttle? I don't care if it gets warm, I just don't want the damn thing overheating when I'm watching HD video or gaming during my long train rides.

Galaxy s8 or OP5T?
Both are the same price for me in australia.

s8

Any subtle FTP servers for android?
Something that doesn't make notification is preferred.

How is kogan.com? Thinking of buying a phone from there

>For instance, the Mi A1 has a dual graphite layer under the chassis that absorbs the heat from the processor and distributes it evenly across the body to keep the temperature from rising up.

5 hours left until I can unlock my Redmi Note 4X. Should I flash LineageOS or stick with MIUI9? I'm mostly interested in the google HDR+ cam. Are there any other advantages in using Lineage? Are there any cons?

Seven threads of straight Kirino. God bless.

Fucking Huawei. I had a Nexus 6P that shat itself because the battery is terrible because of their incompetence and they refused the fix it because the glass on the back where the camera is had a slight crack.

he said usd, unless he's ok with only band5 compatibility he's gonna want something else

That looks cool.
Hopefully apple copies it soon so other androids can copy it too.

The Moto G5 Plus 4GB RAM/64GB ROM is $260 at bhphotovideo.com and is getting upgraded to Android Oreo. It comes with the Snapdragon 625 SoC which is one of the best on the market for NOT overheating (it does warm phones, though)

is oxygen os any good or should i replace it

Not hip enough for apple to copy it and sell to rich girls living off of daddy's money

Just had my Moto G5S Plus arrive.
Can I root it and have a stock rom but with root access so i can use xposed?
Or do I need to jump down the "it's a feature" rabbit hole of custom ROMs like with my Nexus 5.
Also I've been away from android stuff since 2015, did i miss anything?

>using an old Samsung Note 2
>How the fuck did Samsung make literally every single part of android worse

Because you're using android from 2011. What did you expect from something 7 years old?

Use a Galaxy Note8 and tell me samsung isn't currently the best smartphone manufacturer.

I just got my Mi A1. What should I do now? I'm euro so I guess I want the EU rom? Is it difficult to do? I've never done it before.

Also should I update to Oreo before or after?

Lineage my dude. Magisk and closed are comfy

Gboard (botnet)
Hacker's keyboard
Anysoft
Oxygen is okay, but I prefer lineage over any custom ROM.
Yes, you could root and use xposed while keeping the same rom on your phone

Alright guys, first time checking those threads. My Galaxy J7 2015 is almost dead (screen acting funny, 16gb aren't enough for me anymore, RAM is a joke giving me no more than 400mb free even in custom roms, and the battery stops charging after 88%) and checking some sites i found the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, 64gb 4gb ram version. Does anyone knows if it's a good choice? It's well within my budget but I want to know if I can trust this and if it has any potential hardware problem.

Forgot to add, I already checked if it's compatible with my carrier and it is.

>Hacker's keyboard
Do you like it more than Gboard?

Not personally, I like Gboard. Hacker doesn't give word correction and suggestions. Anysoft is odd to type on, Gboard does it the best.
Wouldn't trust it
There would of course be a successor to the Pixel 2

Should I install lineage os on my HTC one m8? I have problems with 16gb internal memory because it's out of space regularly.

How can I tell which chinkphones work 100% in the US

look up what bands the phone in question supports and then look up the bands you need for your carrier.

Check the link in the OP, it has a list of carriers, phones, and models and what network they support

i just got lineage, downgraded my android from 8 to 7. When is the Oreo version coming out?

goddamn iTunes is literally garbage, how do people use this. I bought an iPhone thinking, hey i'll try it out, apple is good with music right?

I can install Google Play Store for apps without being a part of the Google botnet right? F-Droid is missing a lot.

I want my next phone to last me a good 4-5 years. I narrowed it down to two choices, the Pixel 2 or iPhone 8.

I'd be tempted to choose the Pixel but I'm worried somewhere down the road the AMOLED screen will start burning in. I also use my phone for GPS sometimes.

Do AMOLED burn ins occur relatively quickly? Otherwise the iPhone display will last half a decade no problem.

I really don't care about OS, I like both iOS and Android. It mostly comes down to software updates, patches, stock OS, and overall longevity of the phone.

would it be a retarded to buy the 6GB RAM + 64GB Storage for $499.00 when I could get 8GB RAM + 128GB Storage for $559.00?

>33% performance increase
>double storage
>Only for $60

Yes, you would.
