Please tell me everything about your job. What education, certification do you need for a job like that? How do you get into the automation industry? Any tips or advice from your experience? I am looking into getting building automation and it is pretty hard finding details on it on the web. Any help is appreciated.

Caas and IaaS.

It's fucking gay. Overworked to heck and have people nagging at me 24/7. Get paid less than developers who spend 50% of their day playing ping pong and I code more than 90% of them on a daily basis.

I work as a Waste Operative (bin loader), except my district still uses black bags instead of wheeled bins so it keeps me pretty /fit/.

Working a physical outdoor job is the highest form of employment for tech people, healthy body, healthy mind and all that. If I worked with computers it would be less fun as a hobby.

Fuck my life.

I actually started off as an electrician. After I got my trade ticket I went back to school for an Electrical Engineering Technology diploma. My grades were good and economy was booming so I kind of had my pic where I wanted to work (had offers from Rockwell, Siemens, Eaton). I worked field service jobs for Eaton for a few years then left and ended up taking a job at a pulp mill because they were offering to pay for my schooling to get an Instrumentation Technician ticket. Now I do the PLC and DCS programming and maintenance there (along with a bunch of other stuff) We are upgrading a bunch of old GE90/70 PLCs to new Allen Bradley’s right now and replacing some old button consoles with HMIs so that eats up a lot of my time. I just got off nights and need to sleep but if the thread is still up when I get up I’ll answer anything else.

Why haven't you killed yourself yet?

because that's illegal where i live

wage slave job where I surf the net or play games for 7.5 hours a day, and update a database for the other 30 mins. Pays ~35 bucks an hour.

I've been playing a lot of in-browser games, since my work comp won't let me install or run any unapproved .exe's. Just finished Fallout 1 last week, now half way though Chrono Trigger.

I'm a computer science tutor and I lead group review sessions. $11.40/hour

what are they going to do about it when you die

why doesn't your boss only pay you for the 30 minutes you're actually being productive and send you back home when you're useless? so inefficient.

thats the joke dummy

I work in a USPS sorting plant. $16/hr

I also mine altcoins.

Welcome in big corporations world.

you failed to answer my question. you only got one 30 minute chore and you get paid fulltime. they're wasting money on you. is your boss even aaare of this or are you cheating your boss?

In one of my jobs, I was working as "IT". So I just had to reinstall windows and if someone new will come to work set his workplace.

I was working 5 days a week 8h, and for a whole week, it was like the 2h top of work.

In the meantime, I just was freelancing/working remotely so I was getting paid double.
It is a win-win situation.

Code monkey

linux sysadmin

idk about him.
But normies now shit, and at the beginning, I tried to tell them that maybe we will work in a way that they call me when something is happening.
But they just told me that they prefer to have somebody to react fast and also there is really a lot of jobs to do.

...

IT-coordinator. I order minions to do work while I sleep in my corner-office and play World of Warcraft.

I have genuinely not done anything but take credit for monkey's work in 3 years and I'm being considered for a promotion.

Long live middle-management.

>jobs to do
work/tasks to do*

so if they want to pay me for sitting why not?

that's different, you're there to fix stuff when IT problems arise , correct? the other guy told me he only has one 30 minute chore and fucks off on the internet for the rest.

it's a common trend on Sup Forums to sensationalize your job by telling everyone you sit around playing videogames all day and get paid for it, in reality it's always different. these people are always lying.

Interesting
I studied electronic engineering, but I couldn't find something related, now I'm a web developer

I'm a line cook.
It's pretty decent, especially since I work with some great people.

In school for Network Engineering though.

Yes, but the problems that they have anyone can solve after watching 10 min of yt vid.

omg user u are so funny

are you comedian or anything?

collect neetbux.

Thanks that is good info. Is the job mostly being an electrician or is there in IT background needed? Can you go into detail about learning how to progam PLC and DCS? Also what is PLC and DCS? Do you ever have to install, maintain, or interact with controllers for security cameras, doors, and prox card readers?

I'm in the same boat lol. I work as an "instuctor" and "teach" (fix syntax errors 75% of the time) children who are forced by their parents to read instructions that require no thought.

are falcons allowed? do you have falcon chow?

did you run over some niggers in calais yet?

where did you find freelance/remote gigs? I have the same kind of deal now, flexitime where so long as my work is done they don't care when or how long I work for and I get paid a full time salary.

the problem is, the work really doesn't take long at all and having so much free time is really boring. I can't give it up though because my lifestyle has moulded around it. freelance/remote work on the side sounds appealing.

Sysadmin/DBA/BI developer for a soulless Big Pharma company.

Senior DevOps Engineer

>le DevOps meme

Pfizer

Novartis.

To be honest the only reason I took the job was because of the pay raise. I just happened to be a developer with a good Linux background and my company waved 6 figures in my face to babysit Kubernetes.

Our management is piss poor at communicating to developers that we even use containers, so we run into horizontal scaling issues all the time. Sysadmins are pretty old school (most in their late 40's or 50's) and still can't wrap their head around new technology. They are good for "open this port" but you try explaining that upgrading this version of Docker or whatever will break our systems and they still do it once a week.

Data scientist. Got a web developer job 87 days after I started to teach myself since I was tired of manual labor jobs, and taught myself math and other stuff while at my web dev job.

Honestly, I wish I did both. The larger companies that make laboratory equipment favor those who have the science background plus programming skills. Agilent was hiring people with a BS in Biology if they knew R for cancer research. I'd like to eventually work for Thermo, Metrohm, or Agilent.

Software dev

Nice job, management is retarded though.

PLC is a programmable logic controller, DCS is a Distributed Control System(basically a marketing term). These are the systems that control every industrial and manufacturing process in the world. They are programmed using IEC 61131 languages.

They are basically computers designed to take in real world inputs, run a program, and produce real world outputs. Theres a lot more to it but this is the basic idea.

Most of my day involves building new logic to refine existing processes or new logic for things we added. Or building graphic interfaces so the people that run our plant can interact with the equipment. Unfortunately everyone in our group has to take turns doing a few months a year of being on call maintenance(if something breaks they call me on the radio and I have to go fix it), that’s why I’m on nights right now which I hate.

I learned the basics of programming these at school but honestly most of it is learned from doing on the job and self reading. I already had a bit of programming fundamentals, so I just kind of gravitated to that area of work.

I have integrated camera systems but not security cameras, things that are not part of physical plant operations usually are separate systems.

If you want to try some simple PLC programming to see what it looks like I recommend automation directs Click PLC. The software is free, and I think they have a PLC simulater program as well. It’s only ladder logic (one of the IEC 61131 languages) but it will give you a rough idea.

Honestly home automation is the realm of diyers and rich people.

>all these fuckers roleplaying
Plain and simple if you're on Sup Forums you're a neet. And if you aren't NEET you don't belong in Sup Forums. GTFO of my internet.
Listen here. I am 32 years old. American. I had a job once when I was 21 and my parents forced me to get one. That didn't last long. I was so pissed my parents wanted me to work that I intentionally got fired. It was surprisingly hard to get fired, too. The management was way too lenient probably because they knew my parents and I basically got a week's worth of pay without doing anything. So that worked out pretty well actually.
Most of these people with jobs are lying. No you don't work at Google dumbass. No you aren't a systems engineer at NASA dumbass. I think people post these things to feel better about their shitty lives. Which makes them more pathetic than me because AT LEAST I KNOW IM PATHETIC. Sup Forums faggots are in denial about their own lives and futures.
If there is one thing I learned in my almost 32 years of being, it is that work is futile. They have no self-benefit too, so that's why I don't work. The things you work on today won't matter 2 fucking days from now let alone 2 years. Employers just want to fuck you. That's why I beat the system. My parents especially don't bother with me finding a job anymore since I'm making more money than them with their retirement.
Which brings me to income. If you haven't learned how to get NEETbux I feel sorry for you. I am making $1900 a month AFTER TAXES just by sitting on my ass. The one thing I really applied myself to get was welfare. I managed to convince the government that I am so disabled that I need money to function. I need money to function my porn and video game habit and crypto that's for sure. But the thing is they are so convinced that I have a debilitating fibromyalgia condition that they are literally willing to give me money for it. People here are afraid of the government but they don't realize that they are the ultimate cucks.
You should be ashamed.

It's not fake though.
it literally exists because devs and shitmins are fucktards and someone needs to bridge the fucking divide somehow.

nice pasta

developer (who likes javascript) who happens to be stuck doing sysadmining a few boxes for some small company. Also bash/gawk/whatever shell bullshit scripting developer on the side.
