I think I went to my dad crying saying I broke my computer or something. He was fucking pissed but we bought the recovery CDs and restored it. Eventually I figured out how to dual boot and started using Linux more often. I still use Linux primarily to this day.

Great Book btw

I was probably around 9 and it was around 2001 or 2002, dad got a couple Linux magazines with install CDs, one for slackware and another for mandrake.
I eventually managed to install mandrake by following the magazine's instructions but didn't keep it for long since the PC couldn't run any windows software. I only got back to Linux in 2008.

y/o, found Knoppix in a videogame magazine
>> disc didn't work, searched Linux in other magazines, one man with a beard took my magazine and said "yess yess these are good distro"
>> spent lot of times playing free games on knoppix and became interested in Linux and Open Source

My dad wanted to teach me how to use Linux, and set me up a CentOS VM.
He had this mindset though, that because RedHat/CentOS is used in businesses, those should be the ONLY distros you should bother with.

GNU/Linux*. Linux is just the kernel.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'.

Guys, while a lot of this might be complete autism, I personally think that in this day and age, calling it GNU/Linux actually has some real meaning. There is this little thing called Android, and it uses the Linux kernel, but the rest of the components are non-GNU. Some are even proprietary! However, I have seen normies make the dangerously misleading claim that "Android is Linux!" It technically is, as it uses the Linux Kernel, but it shares nothing else with GNU/Linux distros, particularly their respect for your freedoms.
Because of this, we should say GNU/Linux, so as not to confuse it with the botnet that is Android, or other such projects. By saying GNU/Linux, we make it clear that yes, we are using Linux, but we are also using Free Software.

Sounds like a plan

I didn't, I still have it installed on my ThinkPad W530. I had the Windows 10 desktop while I had the ThinkPad running Solus, and I got the MacBook Pro over the summer for uni. Also recently got the iPhone 8 Plus, and I am really enjoying it and the integration. I still love Solus though and it is my favorite Linux distro.

Only switched to Linux as main OS way, way later, when - after my PC went up in smoke - I was suddenly saddled with an ancient laptop and decided I want something lightweight on it - so I went Debian LXDE. After I got back to more modern machines, flip-flopped between various Ubuntu flavours and Win7 for a couple years, depending on how much I wanted muh games. Now WINE is at the point when I see no reason to keep Windows though, even for games.

I then went from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 which was laggy as fuck. After a while I switched to Linux Mint Debian, but that crapped itself after an update. Then for the most time I ran Arch until a few years ago when I installed Fedora on a new Laptop. I wanted to install Sup Forumsentoo, but it failed before I could even begin. Now I'm running Arch on my ARM-based chromebook.

I haven't regretted getting into Linux. It's really fun, and I make some money with part-time work I could not make if I had not taught myself Linux. Understanding how a computer works really is a reward in itself.

(OP)
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I wish I still had that computer. I had it up until around 2012 but I left it behind when I moved to the United States. It still worked and I was running an IRC server on it before I left. That was the experience that taught me linux wasn't to be feared of

When I was like 13 there was a magazine that came with a different GNU/Linux Live disc every week, I remember using it for the first time, I liked that the boot screen resolution was much higher than windows, though the OS was too complicated for me to use and the lack of games was what made me drop it instantly, though I still collected all 40+ releases of the magazine because I liked the concept of free alternatives made by enthusiasts, the discs must be somewhere down in the basements right now, maybe I'll try to find them one of these days.

Corel Linux was my very first experience.
I later ran RedHat 5 through 8 before moving to Debian and eventually Ubuntu, which I still use.

I've toyed with Mandrake/Mandriva, Gentoo, Fedora, Mint, Arch, LFS (only once and not on real hardware) and the BSDs
