>On August 15, 2013, Barlow participated in a Reddit AMA,[97][98] where he shared his "Principles of Adult Behavior", which were originally written in 1977 on the eve of his 30th birthday and have been in circulation ever since:

>Be patient. No matter what.
>Don’t badmouth: Assign responsibility, not blame. Say nothing of another you wouldn’t say to him in the same language and tone of voice.
>Never assume the motives of others are, to them, less noble than yours are to you.
>Expand your sense of the possible.
>Don’t trouble yourself with matters you truly cannot change.
>Expect no more of anyone than you can deliver yourself.
>Tolerate ambiguity.
>Laugh at yourself frequently.
>Concern yourself with what is right rather than who is right.
>Never forget that, no matter how certain, you might be wrong.
>Give up blood sports.
>Remember that your life belongs to others as well. Don’t risk it frivolously.
>Never lie to anyone for any reason. (Lies of omission are sometimes exempt.)
>Learn the needs of those around you and respect them.
>Avoid the pursuit of happiness. Seek to define your mission and pursue that.
>Reduce your use of the first personal pronoun.
>Praise at least as often as you disparage.
>Admit your errors freely and soon.
>Become less suspicious of joy.
>Understand humility.
>Remember that love forgives everything.
>Foster dignity.
>Live memorably.
>Love yourself.
>Endure.

Kill yourself man.

Reverse this or at least have the numale happy on both. Dennis is like a programmer's virtue signal device.

>virtue signal

I don't think you know what that means. Anyway, Dennis Ritchie objectively accelerated progress for computers, you don't need an opinion on that because it does not matter.

Seems like a cool dude, I'm mostly a huge fan of the EFF.

R.I.P.

I do know what it means. Many here sing the praises of Dennis merely to fit in. They think he's the embodiment of some select concepts, and thus lauding him is literally signaling a perceived virtue. Imagine hundreds of 16 year olds posting images of Dennis because a few oldfags talk about him occasionally.

You don't know what it means. Spend less time on Reddit.

Praising someone's accomplishments =/= Praising someone's virtues.

How do you tell the difference between someone who venerates Dennis for the right reasons vs. the wrong reasons; as decided by who exactly?

If a bunch of young folk like Dennis, good, even if they haven't touched C.

You could make the same silly comment about Tesla fans, but hey, I think people actually know a shit-ton more about Tesla and have opinions about Edison and copyright law that are more nuanced than they were twenty, ten, even five years ago!

If in two decades I'm still kicking, and I see people talking more knowledgeably about programming and computer science history because they looked up Dennis Ritchie, I'll be pleased.

I knew Barlow a little bit.

Cool guy. I just rewatched one of his talks, where he was talking about fractals. It was like a voice from the grave - that's what I was always talking about with him.

One reason people are talking about him - he was talking about the net and what exists now, back when no one had any idea there would be all this stuff.

Ripppp
Grateful ded time tho
