Rent rises 200% near the first Apple Store in Seoul, neighboring stores close

Apple paid 2x the going rate to get a landlord to kick out existing tenants, raze the existing building, and a build a custom Apple Store building in Garosugil, a Seoul neighborhood known for quirky fashion boutiques.

Now, most of the Apple Store's neighboring stores have closed after landlords demanded double the rent or are preparing to close when the current lease ends.

How do you feel about big tech brands setting up "brand halo" stores in trendy neighborhoods hoping to associate their brand with trendy fashion only to trigger soaring rent and death of the independent stores that made the area trendy to begin with?

stupid move by the landlords. apple will give them hell, they'll not having their store next to abandoned shopping windows.

...

>distort market with retarded amounts of capital
>blame everyone else for fucking up the market

kicking out the tenants seems like a good idea, if everyone else is willing to pay 2x for the same space and they have people lined up around the block to move in

somehow I doubt this is the case
also i don't know of any tech brand that can pull off the trendy "fashion" look other than apple, this is gonna blow up in their faces

As much as i hate apples, the landlords are to blame in this story

You can't actually raise the rent 200% in america.

The law that prevents this is known as the Rent Control Act

real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/landlord_tenant/rent-control.htm

in other words seoul is unregulated and i should invest in an apartment there

In other words, you're a greedy asshole who should die of ass cancer.

apple is cancer and people who buy their products are the ones to blame

Residential rentals are heavily regulated in S. Korea, but most commercial rentals are not. Try coming up with minimum $10M you'll need to buy even the smallest retail building in Seoul.

I've been to Seoul and knocking down a few of their shitboxes will pay off in business traffic for the replacements. Seoul is far too dense for property to go to waste.

Bonus is an Apple store might actually comply with building codes. Most structures are palletfag cuckshed quality because it's cheaper to bribe an inspector.

The building is in Gangnam. You can't do that shit there because people lawyer up to shake you down.

Why shouldn't the landlord do as he pleases with his property?

ok this isn't america, its seoul

rent control only applies to very specific areas in cities. if my landlord decided to raise my rent by 100x, he's allowed to do that

>he's against capitalists

How about private properties start requiring everyone who's on the premises to pay for breathing their air?

>he thinks being a capitalist leech is something to be proud

Brainlet identified.

The problem here is that yet another shitty suburban mall brand (Apple Store) has come into actually trendy neighborhood to pretend it's a hip, edgy brand when it's really for suburban boomers and geriatrics, and has driven up the rent for all its neighbor stores to the point the neighborhood is on verge of collapse and will likely turn into yet another "basically mall with only chain stores, but outside and less convenient" bullshit nobody wants.
