Everyone who is not buying 10TB is retarded and wast his money.

1TB $153
2TB $200

What type of files are you keeping on the HDD?

>

I recommend getting it now.
Remember when years back HDD prices increased to to (((factory flooding))).

I actually just bought a WD 8Tb for a new build. There was an almost £100 price drop on them recently, great value.

Going from 8 SATA ports to only 4 was a pain and I had mixed bag of drives 4/4/2/2/2/1/1 plus an SSD

Now I'm using the 8/4/4/2 and 1Tb of NVMe primary.

>(((WD)))
Fuck off

Music, videos, photos, documents, anything that doesn't require low latency and high iops operations.

> bought a WD 8Tb
good for you.
>Going from 8 SATA ports to only 4 was a pain
Why?
Why do this?
Why not add extension cards to help if the mobo is this level of shit.

because I got two 8TB HGST heliums for $200 each last month.

>videos
Are you the

Can someone explain this to me?
newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1B0-0020-00091&ignorebbr=1&cm_re=PPSSELQJVDCDVC-_-1B0-0020-00091-_-Product
6TB $615
VS
10TB $355

I'm all kinds of files, but no videos. mostly text and images.

I don't record videos on my phone. almost exclusively images.
my music folder is only about 6 GiB.
my main drive is about 120 GiB I think

I'm not

Likely because a 6tb is still for regular use while the 10 tb is for archiving and long term storage

I was struggling to find good Z370 boards with lots of SATA capacity. The one I have has 6 SATA ports but if you use 2 of the M.2 drives in PCIe 4x mode then you lose 2 of the SATA ports taking me down to 4.

I still have the drives next to me an space inside the case (Define R6) so I could get a SATA expansion card and add that 6Tb back in across 4 drives, I may do that when I run out of space which will happen fairly soon.

You need to be retarded to pay more and get less.
>6tb is still for regular use
Insert the 10TB into the computer and enjoy the space.
Seriously why would you pay more for less?

I'd rather not have a full 10tb failure.

Because I have no autism

>I don't record videos
Really get into the habbit.
Its so good.
For regular use I don't see why why going above HD quality is needed.

Lets say someone shows you how to cook something you can:
A) only write it in text and have problems deciphering cryptic messages or omitted information
B) plant a camera on the tripod and record the process while also making notes.
Every gamer who tried to follow old instruction in text only VS video demonstration will instability understand.
Text can leave out so much information.

> record videos on my phone
Phones are gay and I only use my for SMS and calling.
I hate phones.
I have a dedicated video camera I can mount on a tripod.

Global rule 7:

>Advertising (all forms) is not welcome—this includes any type of referral linking, "offers", soliciting, begging, stream threads, etc.

>tfw I remember when 320gb was $300

Literally paying for memes. Backblaze stats show that WD Reds are more prone to failures than regular HGSTs.

>I'd rather not have a full 10tb failure.
???
So lets say you have 5TB of data on a 6TB HDD it all fails you are left with nothing.
Other scenario you have 5 TB of data on a 10TB HDD same thing.

I fail to see the difference.

Also scrub learn to create redundancy buy 2 HDDs and mirror the contents of the primary to the archival one from time to time.
Problem solved.

One good thing for gaming has been Nvidias recording software, it used to be back in the day that you'd use Fraps and you'd have to take a huge frame rate hit, that meant setting up recording before hand, tweaking res and settings etc.

Now you can record off the GPU and encode without any noticeable frame rate hit, and it just runs in the background all the time, either dumping to disk constantly or keeping just the last many X minutes which you can save with a key press.

Now I record everything all the time, and the number of funny moments we've caught, or things like PUBG chicken dinners as a squad, it's completely changed the landscape. You need a truck loads of storage space though.

Why aren't you just using obs lossless?

Wait a sec, that's not how I remember that webm going.

Oh ancient one tell us what you used your HDD back in the day.
Also tell us how you fell about living in the future.

You better delete the entirety of Sup Forums because people are constantly talking about actual products.
And this is a good thing or do you want the nebulous
Some HDDs are great price to storage ratio.

lel, I was waiting for THAT to happen.

>>Why aren't you just using obs lossless?
Just convenience, I use the Nvidia tool already for other things, it's handy to have a single key press set up to just dump the last 15 mins of gameplay.

It looks good enough and I don't have to worry about if it's hurting the frame rate. also Downscales 4k to 1080p quite nicely.

What about 128MB flash drives. Damn school reset Windows after every logout so USB drivers had to be reinstalled constantly.

>not retrofiring your old computer to be used for a dedicated capture device.
I'm disappointed Sup Forums.

Why did you not turn your old computer into a dedicated file server?

Yeah you can capture this stuff off the wire if you want absolutely crystal clear video/audio but it's not for any kind of professional use, it's just for private use to go back and watch some of the best bits. We occasionally throw up some of the funny bits on youtube where it slays the quality anyway.

So what capacity should one get that won't fail so easily?

The main benefit of this is having practically ZERO framer drops while playing and the HDD is free to only use the game,

Also using old computers for new tasks is always fun and smart.

>$355
Fucking thieves. I can get 2x8TB for almost the same price.
Go shill your overpriced garbage somewhere else.

Give us the link.
We want this info on cheap 2x8TB HDDs

porn, lots and lots of porn

No, remember i have 1tb of storage for media and documents. Though i usually dont keep everything i download and usually only like certain music and videos. So in the end it usually doesnt take up much

I took the PSU and video card from my old rig so I need to buy some parts to get it operational, and having just spent like £2k I'm going to wait a while before buying more components.

But it's an OK PC still, 2600k and 16Gb of RAM, so I'll re-use it, but that's for a future project.

It is fun and smart and I will re-use it for something. But the Nvidia recording is basically free in terms of performance, it's really surprising how little impact it has. So convenience wins out.

>10TB HDD for all your needs
>putting all eggs in one basket

>Though i usually dont keep everything i download and usually only like certain music and videos

This is the way to go. Though it starts piling up if you have fetishes and are worried about transient content. Otherwise it's easy to just watch TV/movies and delete them afterwards.

>Nvidia recording
You need to tell me more about it and its limitations etc.

Tell us your backup strategy professor Turing.
Is it:
>I have multiple HDDs is one failed I only lose part of my data.
See:

>This is the way to go.
> just watch TV/movies and delete them afterwards.
What a uncultured pleb.
>Not having a digital library of content you can watch at every occasion.
>Downloading everything over and looking like a pleb.
>Looking up torrents only to realize they are dead or the one you deleted was the best quality
>Not having a library of content you can quickly parse and use to make GIFs or memes.

>fetish
Well its a good thing i only got one, though even that can start increasing overtime sadly

>using an Onion comic for your argument

Its still true.

I'm going to make a edit where the cultured man is holding a HDD and the kid is bitching about YT deleting movies and needing to wait for torrents to download.

Too expensive. 4TB is where the sweet spot at.
4TB is under 100 EUR, 10TB is under 300EUR. 3*4TB=12TB, no redundancy.

I plan on getting two internal 10TB HDD and using windows to mirror the first drive to the second.

I assume I should get two different brands to prevent both from failing due to a common manufacturing issue?

Also I have 1 x SATA III port and 2 x SATA II ports remaining. Will this be an issue? I plan on connecting the mirror drive which I won't be using unless failure to the SATA II port.

WD Purples are for security systems. I have no need to keep writing to a drive.

5400 RPM at that capacity would be painful.

i can understand a digital library of something like ebooks where there's actually value in the files, but most television/anime/film is completely vapid and not worth archiving

>I plan on getting two internal 10TB HDD and using windows to mirror the first drive to the second.
Nice idea however this is n00bish.
This will not protect you if windows will go crazy (this has happened even with zero viruses) and decide to purge the two HDDs or worse yet lose files on them.

Also if some crypto terrorists installs itself it will lock all your files and this will be mirrored to the other HDD.

You are on windows after all.
The best solution is to copy by hand and disconnect the archive and put it into the closet.
Some people take the backup drives to work and keep them in their office so even if you house burns down you still have the backup.

Go for it. I rarely have experience your problems though. I have private trackers and private MEGA sites with content available. As far as GIFs and memes go it's not worth spending time recreating webm for a possible (you). If anything I'm trying to cut down on my Sup Forums usage rather than subsist on it for the temporary dopamine when people rely to my posts.

>buying hard drives in 2018 for anything other than enterprise use
wow you're really special huh?

>I'm going to make a edit where the cultured man is holding a HDD
lel, post it on Sup Forums and reel in the angry (you)s

???
Instructional videos are still valid and they are by definition movies.
> television/anime/film
Kind of true its still nice to have something to watch if you are sick or want entertainment.

>WD Purple for data storage
Bad idea. Get a Blue or Black.

>Go for it.
ok the only problem is I make it a comic with multiple panels or I will write a wall of text.
>I have private tracker
The fuck?
You delete files from private trackers?
And they still did not ban you?!?!?!?!
I have a dedicated computer for the tracker and it holds all files forever because it gives you a good ratio and the mods will freak out if they find you are basically doing a hit and run.
>MEGA sites with content available.
Point at him, point at him and laugh.
Have fun overpaying for the extremely limited and overpriced space they give you.
You are demonstratively wrong.
Want me to make you a calculation using the real numbers?

Or can you check this for yourself and see how stupid it is?
>As far as GIFs and memes go it's not worth spending time recreating webm for a possible
Me me watch a movie or see a funny scene in a comic etc.
Extract it and place it in my personally created collection folder.
Don't post it on Sup Forums like a retard.
If I need a reaction image I simply reach in my collection and post it.

You should think of it like photography, you see something funny then you take a photo of it or film it.

You can later show it your friends or use it to meme on the internet, yes even on Sup Forums.
Reaction images can be useful.

is Sup Forums hating on HDDs?
Why?
I was never to Sup Forums

cause they all stream from shitty ad ridden sites or buy blurays like good plastic goyim

What is the difference between the colors?
Personally I buy the cheapest because I have 2 and if the primary dies I simply lost the content I did have on it for the last 30 days max.
Every 30 days I copy the primary to the archive.

Everything can and will fail so I think this is smart.
Also I'm open to suggestions because I want the best setup possible way of managing my digital life.

>You delete files from private trackers?

I have no problem leaving it to seed there and deleting it once it reaches 1:1. I only care to do this because i already have a fairly decent ratio buffer.

>Have fun overpaying for the extremely limited and overpriced space they give you.

There is no payment involved. Bots scrape releases, upload them and then I can download them if I ever need to download something in a pinch. I don't pay anything.

And they think they are superior for it?
> stream from shitty ad ridden sites
Jesus don't they know they can simply download the file from the website using browser plugins?
At least you can use your own player with the file not the exploding shit these websites have.

>And they think they are superior for it?
the bluray goyim? yeah
>Jesus don't they know they can simply download the file from the website using browser plugins?
they're basically Sup Forums 2.0, they're not too bright, the smartest ones barely manage to download some scene encode from rarbg

Shit, good point.

>reaches 1:1.
OK. Nice save there.
>I don't pay anything.
So you basically download from someones website.
OK.

I was once forced to re-download something from one of these release MEGA websites.
Its stupid and a pain.
Local connections are far superior and faster.
You really need to give it a try.

You can brows and watch the films so faster.

No problem.
I'm here to exchange ideas.
I think I have the best solutions.
Also invest in physical and digital security if you are talking a archive to the office.

Buy a combination lock briefcase this will stop most pranksters and morons.
And always have your data inside of a encrypted file container so even if someone manages to get your HDD they can go and fuck themselves because they will be unable to read the data.
They still can format and use it however.

>mfw building a 6x 10TB stack in my kikeripper this year

>the bluray goyim? yeah
I actually support the bluray goyim because if no one supports physical media I will not get my bluray rips.
Netflix is cancer and jews its transmission by constantly giving shitty compressed streams.

Also Netflix and others have complete control over the content and you own nothing, physical media at least is a legal way of having some ownership over the files you have.

Do you think 99% of the bluray boys are trickers who pretend they buy bluray to get idiots to buy it because they work on my logic?

Well MEGA gives me a very good speeds and despite reports I've been able to download 50GB in one session with no problems.

If something isn't on MEGA or torrent then I just use usenet which is also free if you know what you are doing. Many clients allow you to 'stream' so there's no problem with my approach.

>surveillance drive
B O T N E T
O
T
N

T

>usenet is free
HOW?

The idea is that after you get something from the internet (MEGA, torrent IRC etc) You keep it organized on a HDD because the HDD is faster then the internet connection practically always (unless you are in some data center however I doubt the boss lets you pirate on the internet or is not monitoring your activity).

If they were 5 bucks a pop and buying a 4k bluray player didn't mean having to sell a kidney then yeah maybe i'd fall for the pastic jew too.
>Do you think 99% of the bluray boys are trickers who pretend they buy bluray to get idiots to buy it because they work on my logic?
Considering the level of shilling on Sup Forums, it wouldn't be too farfetched.

If I told you then it wouldn't be so easy to exploit.

What are you planing on making Mr. President?

nobody cares. 60TB isn't impressive and neither is a consumer processor

fuck you mane

t. poorfag core 2 duo shitposter

Because I'm a poorfag yes I have a job. But it's not paying good.

Yeah I get that. Though I rarely re-watch movies/TV so I don't typically care to keep files. I understand that others like to preserve files in case of some calamity but for me I just watch something and don't typically revisit it for many years, if ever.

if a pair of 2699v3s are poor, sure

Ah, the 2011 Thailand floods.

It's just part of the Geforce Experience tool, it runs in the background and continually writes footage and sound into buffer. You select the location, the duration you want to record for, and then the res/quality/bitrate.

Then when in game it just runs in the background and if something happens you want to capture, you hit a key and it dumps the last many X minutes into an mp4

It's done in hardware on the GPU, it's just dumping out the frame buffer and I think doing some minimal encoding to keep file sizes sane. It looks extremely good when played back.

Or you can set it to just record absolutely everything all the time, but I figured I'd never be bothered to sift through the files after so just post-hoc capture whatever happens to be funny at the time.

Like this shit, this made me die youtube.com/watch?v=vWJC4a7yr9Y

Not that user, but one limitation I know is that it breaks in multi-monitor setup. I had been using it until I got a second display. And later Novidia introduced all these botnets so I don't want to even try anymore.

I know this pic was a Honda car factory, but HDD factories there were literally underwater too.

doomsday hoarders are the worst

if piracy becomes impossible and a tyrannical government shuts down the internet not being able to watch your chinese cartoons will be the least of your worries

>1TB HDD for all your needs
>putting all eggs in one basket

I was sick recently.
So while in bead I copied Star Gate Atlantis and was re-watching it while in bead.

That's what I keep saying but I am typically met with ridicule.

And you think some real accidents or (((will of god))) will not happen?
See RAM prices now.

> don't typically revisit it for many years
Same however after all these years its faster to open your Film folder then search google and look for them.

Well that's fine. What I'm really arguing against is compulsively storing 1TB+ of TV/movies that you may never watch again. Something as recent as Stargate Atlantis would be easy to procure.

>It's faster to open your Film folder then search google and look for them

Agreed. But again, I have the resources available that it wouldn't be hard to find anything less than a scene release of the show/movie you're interested in. Also by resources I'm not bragging. It's just simple logic that would lead you downloading a good quality copy of whatever you're interested in.
