would you guys be interested in hearing a noise track I threw together with audacity amd my cellphone muc?
Isaiah Nguyen
Do you use a patch manager/editor yet? Way easier to program them on a computer, one of my bandmates has a DX7 that only has factory patch cards, whereas I use my computer to program my TX-616
Josiah Walker
No, but I'll give it a courtesy listen since you asked.
If you are a total beginner and want to create/make/produce music (or something that resembles music) you should first think about two basic things first:
what music you want to create
>why you want to create music
whoever wrote that just know that you're a cunt and everyone hates you
Dominic Green
What's wrong with trying to articulate why you want to? Not the guy who wrote that, but it seems like a pretty open ended question. Like "just because I feel like it" seems like a legitimate answer

i got a saxophone sample i want to use but there is piano underneath it and i am very amateur and have no idea how to eq it out. is there an easy way to do this? is it impossible? pls help
Nathan Rodriguez
probs impossible
Alexander Green
Questions of why lead to questions of what you want to achieve. It's important for giving yourself direction.
Jeremiah Morris
all you have to do is eq out the piano frequencies
Need to get a MIDI interface first! Really want to though. Been getting some cool sounds manually but I'm ready to step it up.
Owen Gutierrez
>Need to get a MIDI interface first! I would recommend getting an audio interface that has midi. Usually usb midi devices are either cheap crap, or fancy devices that cost as much as a decent audio interface that already has midi.
That said, it's not totally unprogrammable as-is. You do have to go through a few hoops to get programming software that runs on modern OSes.
Luis Perry
Hm, alright. Which one do you recommend? I actually need a good way to record anyway.
Grayson Morgan
the focusrite 2i4 is only $35 or so more than the 2i2 (so $145), and comes with 2 more outputs. They both have 2 audio inputs, but only the 2i4 has midi
these days, it doesn't really matter what audio interface you get, they tend to be the same quality unless you spend extra money for crazy good shit like an Apogee Duet
Jacob Wright

Real talk, no scrubs plz.
I've been doing some shit for a film soundtrack, and I cxan simulate basically everything and it sound like not a synth except for high note brass. Strings, no problem, deep brass, no problem, but high brass always seems to come out like some shite 80s synth. Wat do/tips/etc?
Adrian Brooks
I would advise getting a good saxapone library instead. That way you can write your own sax licks and not have to worry about isolating premade licks.
When 2 sounds are put together in a recording, especially if they're real instruments with wide frequency ranges (like the piano) it becomes very difficult to isolate them from each other. Nigh on impossible to do 100% without losing anything.
I would recommend kontakt 4 or 5 VST with the VSL tenor sax library
Brandon Cook
Does anyone have a super (expensive) interface / sound card? Is it good, can you say why?
David Peterson
>Talking bout sax Just take a random video from saxdad, chop that fucler up and you're good to go. Just pick any 4 secnds from this shit. youtube.com/watch?v=RPJXPHDtGUU And you're good to go.

Care about how good your equipment is after you can write a tune.

I think out of all of the people who have entirely missed the point of questions, you've outdone them all.
Perhaps you were looking for the soundcloud thread?
I've been drinking heavily. Thank fuck this place is anonymous.

No
Dominic Wright
Not as bad as it sounds. By which I mean composition wise you're fine, but sound wise you're way off. If you hd a decent sounding drumkit and a synth that sounded like a real instrument, you could pass this off as smoky jazz. The potential is there, you just need to learn how to produce.
Parker Thomas
Pretty much this, the actual song is great it just sounds like lame MIDI unfortunately. It's really hard to make good sounding jazz on a computer
Justin Rodriguez
this used to be somewhat expensive, now it's not since they're dropping support on it because it's hard to make money off of devices you have already sold
it's still great because it has 4 mic pres and a bunch of line ins and outs, so I still break it out for when I need to mic drum kits
otherwise I use an Audient iD22, which sounds much better, but only has 2 inputs
John King
there is nothing wrong with soundcloud
Nolan Robinson
Ah I got it. What's the problem though? Honestly I think I used pretty decent instruments compared to what's out there. Maybe it was my horn sounds? lol. How about the mix? I felt like the horns were loud at times, right?
Jason Sullivan
Youknow if you really can't see how you were way far off, can you export the midi files, upload them and let us fux wit dem? I want to show you the difference that could be.
i don't have the midi files bro...didn't do this with the default microsoft synth. Honestly I used samples from AD and stuff like that. I got scores but whatever. It's all good mate. Listening to it now maybe some of the crash sounds are shit. should probably change that as well as other parts of the mix
Ethan Brown
but user, I prefer to write my own music. I only sample things that aren't instruments. Things like aircraft carriers, combat footage, unknown radio signals from the cold war, etc.
William Adams
of course not. We all use it. There is something wrong with /prod/ becoming a soundcloud thread though. People just dropping links hoping for plays and comments, and then leaving the thread. This thread is about growing as producers. Mindless soundcloud posting isn't really conducive to that. There is nothing wrong with clyp.it either
Cooper Bennett

I've been an instrumentalist for a long time now, but I recently got into producing.
I made an electronic track for a project I'm working on. Considering that I usually don't come anywhere near electronic music in my own work this is somewhat odd, although I do think that it fits with the other tracks I'm working on for the project.
I'm a complete beginner production wise and I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some feedback on this track, both regarding production and the track itself:
This is a demo and I'm aware it needs a better mix.
Adrian Williams
first off, try to avoid soundcloud links in /prod/ threads, in the future.
- low end on the pad synth is awful and boomy. if it's a layered synth, drop that layer. if not, eq it out and you can bump the volume on the synth up for more presence. - replace that low end with some proper bass or a better low-end layer. - ease up on the phaser. - kick drum is awful - throw it out and use something else with better low end and less of an acoustic top. - don't know if it's the sustain on the piano, the sample library or the reverb but that piano at the end needs work. sounds shrill and muddy all at the same time. high velocities on those notes are probably compounding the issue as well.
generally muddy and indistinct mix; makes it hard to diagnose without multitracks on hand, but don't post those here.
>People just dropping links hoping for plays and comments, and then leaving the thread.
Jose Bailey
Not even, really.
That does help. I'll look into it. Thank you.

>It's just that I'm such a beginner that I'm afraid to give others, who are more experienced and knowledgeable than myself, bad advice.
fair enough I'm not trying to single you out and be a cunt, although I might of come across like that. I don't always give out production advice if I'm not 100% comfortable, unless someone asks something specific like "are my drums too loud?" or "How does a compressor work?" as I think quite often a lot of that sort of thing is subjective, unless of course its way out in the mix, but you can still listen and give feedback on how things sound to you. After all opinions are just that, opinions, but yeah giving out wrong technical advise is probably not so smart
Brayden Ortiz
There he is. There he goes again. Look, everyone! He posted it once again! Isn't he just the funniest guy around?! Oh my God.
I can almost see your pathetic overweight frame glowing in the dark, lit by your computer screen which is the only source of light in your room, giggling like a like girl as you once again type your little Soundcloud Kid post up and fill in the captcha. Or maybe you don't even fill in the captcha. Maybe you're such a disgusting NEET that you actually paid for a Sup Forums pass, so you just choose the picture. Oh, and we all know the type of post. The "epic" passive aggressive sc kid cuck post, isn't it? I imagine you little shit laughing so hard as you click it that you drop your ipod earbuds on the floor, but it's ok, your mother will pick them up in the morning. Oh, that's right. Did I fail to mention? You live with your mother. You are a fat fucking fuckup, she's probably so sick of you already. So sick of having to do everything for you all goddamn day, every day, for a grown man who spends all his time on Sup Forums posting about social justice on /prod/. Just imagine this. She had you, and then she thought you were gonna be a scientist or an astronaut or something grand, and then you became a NEET. A pathetic /prod/ ruining NEET. She probably cries herself to sleep everyday thinking about how bad it is and how she wishes she could just disappear. She can't even try to talk with you because all you say is "So transparent lol." You've become a parody of your own self. And that's all you are. A sad little man laughing in the dark by himself as he prepares to indulge in the same old dance that he's done a million times now. And that's all you'll ever be.
Forever...

Is it difficult to record a upright piano? I have one of those Yamaha uprights, sounds decent to me and I wish to record it, but it's sitting in the living room without any acoustic treatment.
I could opt to buy one of those sample libraries but honestly, I would rather play the damn piano.

Need some help finding this VST, it's kind of like a microsoft sam type thing where you type the words and input the melody and some woman's voice sings it for you. I'm pretty sure it's some Japanese anime avatar and it's called Sophie or something?
Noah Powell
not really, but uprights tend to sound bad when recorded or in general I like to use grand pianos for that shit
vocaloid? I've heard that it's tough to use, but I knew a female weeb back in the day that claimed to use it all of the time, but I knew she was full of shit

How do i get good at VST string ensemble instrumentation?
For example, most of the Dark Souls 1-3 OST is made using virtual instruments, yet it sounds really close to the real thing. How do they do all that legato stuff and such using virtual instruments?
I have Ableton Live 9 Suite and it comes with a bunch of orchestra instrument packs, but haven't been able to utilize them well at all.
I assume you have to make use of clever songwriting/layering etc. to hide the synthethic sounding features of digital orchestra instrumentation.
Hudson Rodriguez
Is anyone here into sound design? Like sound effects for film/games. How do you get started with this stuff? I mean i already have my trusty DAW, midi controller, monitors and other hardware, i've been making music for a long time, but recently i've been getting really interested in just making sound effects
Alexander Ross
Although I don't make sound effects for films and games I do Make almost all of my own sounds, I'd say 90% of my time in the studio is Sound design and maybe 10% making actual music/arranging.
I guess how you get started depends on what sort of sounds you want to design? Like if you have a sci-fi film you want to sound design for then I'm guessing you'll be looking at making a lot of metallic sounding sounds and pads and things with long reverbs and atmospherics?
One way to start is to find a scene in a film you like and stick that into your DAW, remove the original soundtrack and start arranging your own using synths, samples and effects, just like any other sound design I guess?

Which microphone should I go for recording vocals/guitar? I'm having a hard time deciding between the AKG C214 and the RODE NT1.

Clever layering and whatnot is part of it but the stock Ableton sounds aren't that good for the most part. Try Kontakt for better strings/orchestral sounds
Jason Torres
Yeah but like what is it?
Leo Jones
I want to be able to record bars of a drum kit (4 or 5 tracks) and have it start looping, but I can't figure out how to record multiple fixed length tracks simultaneously.
I'm guessing I need a foot controller to work around this. What foot controller do you guys recommend for live recording with Ableton? Or is it all the same? Some of these things with banks and shit seem like they might not work well.
Lincoln Cox
>tfw tinnitus is back for no apparent reason Aw fuck. And it wasn't acting out for over a year.
Jack Collins
I'm not quite sure what you mean, like are you trying to record yourself playing drums and have it play back immediately? Or do you just want to multitrack somebody playing drums, then edit it then loop it?
Jason Anderson
Recording stuff and mangling it is the easiest way. I'd guess a vast majority of stuff you hear in movies and games starts as a recording.
Henry Watson
The first one. Record myself playing drums and have it play back immediately while I shuffle over to the guitar or something.
