Japanese, how do you see your colonial period? Do you see it like Germans see the Nazi time or do you have sort of pride towards your former empire?

I'm leaving to live in Japan for a year for academic reasons. I've had a few video calls with the university department that will be hosting me, and frankly I have a concern I'd like to ask about.
Japan's academics seem drastically different. They seem uninspired, for the lack of a better word. I'm going for a liberal arts field.
Does anyone have any insight into what Japanese liberal arts culture is like? Being in America I'm used to constant discourse between members of a department, serious research and publishing, etc. and I've seen no evidence of this being a facet of the university I'm visiting.
For the record, it's a top 5 university in Japan according to some basic lists online, so it's a nice institution by the country's standards.
I'm trying to be open-minded, I'm just not getting an academic vibe from the place and it's so odd to me.

Everyone has to work in an environment he's not happy with and with colleagues and bosses who have different work ethics. You made the choice, and it's only a year. You'll find the way to make the most of it. Enjoy

I'm not upset about it, I'm just trying to make sure my perception is reasonably accurate. I want to be understanding and useful in the ways they care about. I'm going to take classes and teach at the same time, but I really don't know anything about the structure of Japanese academics. I'm looking for insight from someone who has attended a Japanese university preferably.

If you are going to one of the top 5 universities in Japan, it's a safe assumption that the standards of teachers, staff, and students are really high in many ways. Some professors may be more teaching orientated while others are more research orientated. Older professors may be less enthusiastic, but younger ones are probably more ambitious and trying harder to produce papers that are worthy of publishing or citation. I'm guessing that the university you are visiting is big. It really differs from person to person.
