i like most of those albums dont get it twisted
you do you
you know fuck it I'll just post what I wrote about Stocky because it's better than any argument with Montie
One of the earliest and yet still most inventive and renowned compositions attributed to Darmstadt philosophy is Karlheinz Stockhausen’s composition Gruppen (1955-57), for three orchestras; which is humorous, considering the composer was initially denied a performance at Darmstadt due to his music being “too old fashioned”. The piece involves three ensembles placed around the front of the concert hall in a triangle shape with three different conductors who each beat different tempos. This creates a rhythmic phasing between the groups, as sometimes massive blocks of sound are being passed off in seemingly arrhythmic fashion. However, the tempo and rhythms were supposedly purposefully organized by Stockhausen’s own view of the slopes of the Alps. On top of this, the piece utilizes the distinctly Darmstadt-ian appropriation of serialism, total serialism; partially pioneered in Pierre Boulez’ Structures Iwhere everything from durations and dynamics are placed into sequential rows the same as tones done since Schoenberg. Like Schoenberg and his pupils, however, Stockhausen often lets go of the system for the musical effect, but this is similar to when fabled composers such as Bach sometimes let go of their imposed contrapuntal limitations in order to fulfill a musical effect. In many ways, like his contemporaries, it’s a type of new music that not just seems build on the idea of predecessors, but also conjure something entirely, wholly brand new as a result.
The piece dazzles and confuses a first-time listener, as it starts with a cluster chord in stasis, only for six beats but feeling like sixty. Gliding curves of woodwind and string lines then cascade, with triplets juxtaposed with quintuplets and septuplets. The second orchestra enters with sur ponticelli strings to the side of the listener, creating an air of suspense that is fulfilled with the fortissimo violin solo and the introduction therefore of the third orchestra. And yet this bizarre display is just the first thirty seconds, with twenty minutes yet to come involving fractional tempos, simultaneous fortississimos, and stunning virtuosity.
