Microphone targeted advertising

My wife and I tried some delicious new yogurt we found at the store. We came home from shopping and then found that on her IG and my FB there were ads for this very brand yogurt. We immediately concluded that FB had to be listening to us through the microphone, to target ads. How could targeted advertising be this good? But then I had an even scarier realization. What if they know our demographics so well they KNEW that we would want that yogurt. Here we are thinking we are living free and independent lives, when really our every desire is already tracked by our age, interests, social groups, etc. Thoughts?

I had a similar experience. I was mumbling something out loud and I started typing into google search and the word autocompleted after I typed the first letter. I thought I had disabled the mic in chrome, but apparently something was still on...

Insta could have employed the new tracking technologies. Someone post the leak.

Or it could be coincidence.

>Here we are thinking we are living free and independent lives, when really our every desire is already tracked by our age, interests, social groups, etc.
The botnet can only track normies so far. And normies have always been controlled by media and marketing.

Or it could have been, you know, something you searched before or a really popular search. Try doing it 10 times with less common words.

>facebook.apk
>access to microphone
>access to camera
>r/w sdcard access
>screen on/off detection access
>wifi on/off access
>contact list access

Hm...
y-you don't think..
t-that they would..
s-s-spy on m-me r-right??

Good point... Nobody thinks twice about giving it permission.

>using facebook apk
You have yourself to blame, normie
g thinks twice.

no no no
I clear my history of everything before I shut down my computer and always unplug the ethernet cable when it's not in use. I also turn off the modem, so I don't get the same IP at every boot. THAT's why I was so spooked by the one-time autocomplete (I'm sure it wasn't something I ever searched before, which is why it alarmed me)

I googled the topic, and apparently I'm not the only one...
computerworld.com/article/3149085/search/does-google-listen-in-on-your-life.html

when I think of all the fools uploading their photos to unlimited storage google photos, I deplore how they're just feeding skynet/deepmind with learning data.

>we are living free and independent lives
ha haha HAHAHAHAHA

>"i" clear "my" history of everything

yes your history but not theirs

>that being said, the ISP might track me across IP addresses

You mean the IP assigned to you by your ISP? Wooow. What the fuck are you doing on Sup Forums?

idunno. maybe frogposting too much

I assume the ads where always there.
Which is why you subliminally thought about buying the yogurt in the first place.
But only after buying it had noticed that the ads where trying to force it down your throat.

I use adblock and have google services disabled on my phone, but I encountered something very eerie like OP's scenario as well.

>Notice that my brother's cat has a lump of matted fur on her back
>I bring this to his attention how he oughta comb his cat to get rid of that matted fur, my phone was in my pocket
>Later that day I saw a recommended video on youtube on how to get rid of matted fur on a cat. Used the exact "matted" expression I made.

even if all this is bullshit, Google's suggestion algorithm still scares me

they intentionally engineer the software to 'accidentally' always be listening

This thread is 2spooky4me

>tfw using public wifi
>Try posting itt
>Get the b&page
>Turns out someone on this wifi posted see pee back in 2012

Should I tell management they need to monitor wtf people do on their networks or what?

that's creepy, man

in all reality they don't really "spy" on you.
they just have a program that is ment to recognize target words.

I bet if you yelled " I FUCKING HATE GODDAMN BRAWNEY PAPER TOWELS" they would advertise brawny paper towels. becuase the program had "brawny paper towels" as one of its flagged sayings and words.

its how targeted advertising works.
dude pays facebook x dollars
dude gives facebook keywords
facebook puts keywords into algorithm
wa la

if you got a google email
or a facebook account
or pretty much any online account like steam, even a Sup Forums pass.
they save your shit

if only you could unsubscribe from this shit by screaming
"I HATE YOU" or
"I HATE ADVERTISEMENTS!"

there is billions of dollars worth of incentive to spy, the capability exists, and you think they voluntarily restrain themselves?

are you me? my work ip is banned on 4chin for see pee aswell, fucking creepy dont even wanna know who it is

Did you pay by credit card or other digital method? Banks and money exchange systems are notorious for selling customer data. Why do you think PayPal is "free" to use? All free to use systems are without a doubt linked with regards to marketing, because there is no such thing as a business model that doesn't make money in some capacity whenever possible. If you think they allow for a percentage of their users to to use the service for free by selling premiums, then you are mistaken, that kind of business model never works alone except as some added value.

>when your machine learning algorithms can accurately predict the future actions of people, but you still only send them ads for the product they just bought afterwards
They are like gods.

or you have seen the ad before subconsciously then proceeded to buy said yogurt and after the fact you noticed the ad because you just spent time eating it and staring at the label.

Anyone remember the deadman switch leak from that company that offered datamining and user tracking services to gaming companies?
Pic related is the gist of it.

The screencap only mentions "social media", but in the actual leak it explicitly says Sup Forums and reddit, among others.

i hope theres someway that we can fuck with this shit and make the corporate marketers and technocrats eat themselves.

Yep. She only has Instagram and we started talking about "mid century modern furniture" and it showed up. Then we talked about "Reese's cups" and it showed up within minutes.

She has microphone access denies but it still happens.

My theory is some other app she has shares the same advertising company as Instagram and she hasn't denied access to the mic.

You sure you didn't Google it or search on Amazon? Because I get ads for stuff I search for but nothing else.

Facebook does do that though :)

>FB had to be listening to us through the microphone,
No, that is just stupid.
Did you pay in cash at the store? Or through anything which can identify you?
It seems a lot more plausible that some company which organizes your payments sells out some data.

>Here we are thinking we are living free and independent lives, when really our every desire is already tracked by our age, interests, social groups, etc. Thoughts?
Of course, that is how mass democracy works and how you can help the people to stay stupid/happy consumers and not interfere with your profits.

>I clear my history of everything before I shut down my computer and always unplug the ethernet cable when it's not in use. I also turn off the modem, so I don't get the same IP at every boot. THAT's why I was so spooked by the one-time autocomplete (I'm sure it wasn't something I ever searched before, which is why it alarmed me)
Why are you bothering with that?
That is just stupid and pointless.
Unplugging the cable is irrelevant, the data is just stored, clearing history means nothing aside from what you see and tracking you through your IP is completly unnecessary.

>when I think of all the fools uploading their photos to unlimited storage google photos, I deplore how they're just feeding skynet/deepmind with learning data.
If you use *any* non open source software at all you have no grounds to complain about these people.

>living free and independent lives
>with a WIFE
Sad

What yogurt was it?

>see advertising
>forget
>go to the store
>buy the product
>notice the advertising
>write a retarded conspiratard theory about microphones and the noosphere

>access to microphone
>access to camera
video chat

>r/w sdcard access
crash reporting

>screen on/off detection access
stopping videos when you close the screen

>wifi on/off access
hey retard your wifi is offline popup

>contact list access
building their connections database

use different browser profiles for different things:
support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
(chrome/ium supports this too)
also, there is (it has to be enabled) this:wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Contextual_Identity_Project/Containers
use noscript, ublock origin and/or umatrix
that should be sufficient, though not really enough: you have to disable lots of features in your browser to be protected from spying

>IG
>FB
you should KYS if you use any spying media.

Personal botnet anecdote time
>be fappan
>it’s birthday
>using a browser that I only use for fappan
>use vpn
>never save cookies/cache/etc
>get ad for free week of premium to site cus it’s my birthday

I have never reacted more while operating a PC then that. I’m hoping it was just a coincidence. No way otherwise it should’ve been able to know as that browser is pretty isolated.

>log in to google photos
>find out i've got a bunch of porns photos recorded

Well I hope someone at google has had a good jerk off at least

more likely the credit card company is giving them data about everything you buy.

This is something that is happening to everyone who is using Facebook for what I see. In a class a professor told us the same story than you and then every student there seem to had experienced the same. Back then when I used that piece of shit, someone brought me food to my house. I told him it was good cheese. And guess which was my first ad when I opened Kikebook? Yes, a cheese ad. I told this to one of my friend, so we did the proof. We started to talk good about a car, I think it was a Mercedes, it doesnt matter. The first log it was nothing, but in the second, the first ad was from a Mercedes!

Capitalism. The only solution is to kill every last jew and jew affiliate in the world.

Also notice this. It was the Facebook web (no the app) on my computer. I never searched cheese in my computer before, nor milk, actually I dont search food on my computer. I do not accompanied the person who brought me food, so I was not close to a store. It was the FIRST ad that you see in Facebook and back then I used Facebook like 1 to week, so its not like I saw that ad before.

Nazis were right about the jews.

holy shit man

maybe you bought that brand of the yogurt _because_ you saw the ad.

Bump

But that's what they want you to believe

>I clear my history of everything before I shut down my computer
dumb faggot they take your data in real time and store it also you paided with a card like a dumb goy didn't you

That's cool.
Normies getting what they deserve.
>But I got nothing to hide!

>uses Sup Forums
>has a wife
yeah right

>Here we are thinking we are living free and independent lives

That's reddit. This Sup Forums.

I haven't saved this, but it's been reported many times before. IE a couple was talking about getting a cat and got it, they hadn't even told anyone yet and fb started to show them adds for cat food..
Also don't use fucking fb

>no way this thread is real
>say tomato to my mic
>type "tom"
>2nd search result
>say tom haverford
>type "tom"
>list of names beginning with tom

ok this is really spooky
