I finally got around to replacing my PC/CDROM that was almost 8 years old. Going to a Ryzen 7 1700/16 gig ram/1 TB SSD/and a Radeon 580 (picked the worst time to try to find a video card it seemed).
My question is I've been on Windows 7 forever and refused the free upgrade to 10 when it was offered because it was too new, intrusive, and every other article was about privacy and control issues. Now that I'm upgrading I can't really decide what to do.
I understand that Microsoft doesn't support Ryzen on Windows 7 or 8 (though I did find the workarounds to that just in case I choose one of them) but I'm still hesitant to go to 10. I know you can turn all the spying stuff off though I don't trust it really does completely and a few articles have even been written about it. Also the fact that it makes you update eventually is shady to me. Means they can force whatever they want down your throat just like they are trying to force me to go to 10 because I bought a new processor.
I was thinking about going to 8.1 with the classic shell because it runs quicker and is more efficient than 7 but won't be that big of a change. Is that dumb to go to 8.1 since it never really took hold in the market? Am I being paranoid about 10? Should I just make the jump? Or should I just stick with 7?

Windows 10 seems fine, pretty sure you can disable a lot of the built in spyware, I remember doing it when I downloaded windows 10 but I'm not sure if I actually completely disabled it so I don't want to give any bad advice.
Make the jump, shell out the $200 ($100 if you don't need BitLocker in Pro), get on with your life. 7 is EOL in 2020. Microsoft has been getting better about privacy in 10.

Windows 7 is great, it would be wonderful if M$ could develop their desktop OSes to be more like it and less like a tablet. W10 is an astronomically better OS than W8 though. 8.1 is better but W10 improves upon 8.1.

Might want to consider 7 if you're planning to play games though because you can't disable DWM in 8.1, that shit gives a small amount of input lag and if you're autistic then you will probably going to notice it.
Otherwise, 8.1 or 10 LTSB, whichever you prefer.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 - Just Works. Long as you keep your antivirus software up to date and lock down your firewall/router to limit open ports to only the ones you need you'll be fine. Security Essentials just works. Since MSE is baked into Win Ten and cause the core of the program is the same as standalone install version it'll get updates "forever" (however long Ten is supported). Hackers don't really care about your little home network. They're after the big fish, companies with lots of employees, financial institutions,etc. I'm not saying to leave the "door" to your network open by any means just that your risk of getting hacked is pretty low.

There are registry settings you can change to enable dreamscene on windows versions that don't have it. Doubt they ship with the video files though, so you'd have to track that down.
