Use openbox, i3, awesome, or dwm as your WM and never use a DE again. They are literally not even needed.

Cinnamon is a fork of gnome 2 not gnome 3. It's pretty lightweight and not bad at all. It's been my go to since gnome 2. Before that I was a kde user in the early 2000s.

KDE uses hardly any ram these days. It's still over bloated with widgets, though.

I don't think it's true that KDE is a RAM hoarder anymore, from what I heard it's been using less RAM than GNOME lately.
