Gopher

When did Sup Forums stop falling for the HTTP meme?

I rediscovered Gopher a few years back, then just a little over one year ago I finally started my own.

why not remote filesystem?

explain how an ancient protocol is less of a meme than an established and widely used protocol?

They think it's better just because it's lesser known. Similar thing to IRC and many other things.

Gopher is a happy medium between this and HTTP for sharing files. It's also simpler than a remote filesystem protocol since it's generally read-only. In cases where you need writing you could use both.

And on a side note, there's gopherfs where you can mount a Gopherhole as a remote filesystem.

It doesn't require a client with a system draw equal that to a AAA video game of a decade back.

I guess it must run lightning fast on your Pentium 4 with 256mb of RAM
You fucking hipster

You could probably run it on even less that that.

have you ever tried gopherfs?

Gopher represents a time when people thought the Internet would be mostly information-driven, with a little bit of commerce, before The Web showed us it would become exactly the opposite.

>"I saw a URL on the side of a bus," he says. "That’s when I knew the Web was all about advertising. Gopher was not good for advertising. I knew it would start winding down."
- Mark McCahill

>creator of 2 awfully designed protocols
why should anyone care?

I haven't, but I have tried gophervr

I'm just asking because last time I checked it was for Hurd and damn impossible to find source yet idiots still shill it

git.r-36.net/gopherfs/

here, I just built it on a Debian install from the linked source without any trouble.

Debian (GNU/)Linux* btw, not Hurd

A major mistake was unifying information presentation and exchange, and conversation.

POPmail was just a POP client, he didn't invent the protocol.

Bucktooth with Bucky (for http exit) is all you need.

to be honest just use word and usb sticks

Kek

It's not about wheter http is a bad protocol or not. It's how people build things around it.

Javascript isn't "embeeded" in http and yet is everywere.

And you know, you could just use a browser with no javascript support.

"Add" javascript to this protocol, it will become as "slow as http"

Any info on your gopher you would be willing to share?

Gopher is trash. Stop being a hipster

It's gopher://khzae.net
Not too much of substance yet, just random projects.

Extend tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1149 to support mounting the USB stick to the carrier and you've got something.

Do you have the source code to your gopher chan?

It's in the sticky called "User Guide, README and source"
gopher://khzae.net/1/chan/sticky_4
as a .tar.gz, or you can clone it from GitHub
github.com/kibook/1436chan

fantastic, I found that just about as soon as I posted it, sorry for not looking around a bit first. I am trying to install the bucktooth server, but the configure script is not able to find components that are right underneath its nose for some reason. I will have to play around with it a bit more, I haven't used gopher since the 90s.

>gopher chatroom

Disgusting. Gopher is for presentation of documents.

Just have a telnet/SSH BBS.

>muh snowflake memes
Bitch please, you're still nothing and will die as a sad fuck like the rest of us.

For anyone else trying to figure it out, perl for some reason does not use the current directory when searching for lib components. export PERL5LIB=. worked for me.

Thanks

On the off chance you are still here, what the fuck are phtools?

Some utility shell scripts I made to simplify very common mole (like a CGI script in HTTP) things. For example phitem 1 'Some things' /things spits out 1Some things/things\r\n. They should be included in the repo, just make them executable and put them somewhere in your PATH.

Can you give me a dumb explanation of gopher? And should a retarded like me learn about it?

>Can you give me a dumb explanation of gopher?
Document navigation based around a rigid hierarchy.

>And should a retarded like me learn about it?
If it interests you, why not?

You can navigate a gopherhole faster than a traditional website because everything is according to the folder hierarchy you put the text on. Is braindead easy so why not. Use bucktooth with bucky, bucky provides an http exit, you just put the files under the directory and fire the bucktooth.

Start here gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw

>you put the text on
*files, can be any kind of files too not just text

Just use ssh and tail -f

Gopher can't even be encrypted. It's even worse than http. Not to mention the lack of anonymity and distribution, which means it's on par with http in that regard.

>what is Tor
>what is i2p
Good point tho, on regular network this is a good point.

Holy fuck, you're khzae guy? Your Gopher server is one of my most visited now.

is there any good gopher browser for linux?

Its literally called gopher. The package is in every repo.

Lynx.
