How did 3 junkies become the most influential, important, socially relevant and musically significant band of the 2010s, redefine live performance, revolutionize Hip hop, Rock, Punk at the same time, release their music free on YouTube, get praise form the late David Bowie and influence him on his last album, release a critically acclaimed album a year and literally OWN 2010s?

>the most influential, important, socially relevant and musically significant band of the 2010s

ahhahahahahahahahahahaahah

he's right

You need to step outside your Sup Forums bubble and realize that the vast majority of people don't care about Sup Forums trends.

Death Grips is easily the most influential band of the 2010s for underground music. Maybe not for mainstream music but for underground music, they're probably at the top.

Name another band that isn't accessible that has as many critically acclaimed albums released IN THE SPAN OF 5 YEARS like Death Grips has done.

7 projects
5 albums

None average or below it

I don't even like death grips but tons of my friends listen to them nowadays.

they're not part of the Sup Forums bubble

Who the hell is paying people to shill this group? everyday some dweeb is on here acting like a cuck. Soulja Boy has more influence to this incoherent babbler.

>Sup Forums trends
i met 5 strangers this week who know about death grips 3 of them were fans who own at least an album

> junkies

they are all stone cold sober, total abstinence freaks

Kanye was more relevant and influential in 2010 than what DG will ever be in their entire career.

Death Grips are really popular outside of Sup Forums. Everyone's at least heard a few songs here and there.

OP is right. you don't have to think they're good but you can't deny that they're fucking important.

TMS is only critically acclaimed album they have.

I bet you think that pills bury dough boy looking ass cuck yung lean is influential too

>they are all stone cold sober

try again dude

>Death Grips are really popular outside of Sup Forums.
I've never met a single person in my life that has acknowledged them. Every grandma and her dog knows who Kanye is.

"Rapper Tyler, the Creator,[77] guitarist Tom Morello,[78] late rock legend David Bowie,[79] punk rock icon Iggy Pop,[80] Linkin Park/Fort Minor frontman Mike Shinoda,[81] award-winning film director Edgar Wright,[82] actor Fred Armisen,[83] adult film actress Sasha Grey,[84] actress/singer Emily Osment,[85] and comedian/actor Eric André[86] have all endorsed their admiration and support for Death Grips' music in the past."

of my 130 facebook friends (most of whom i dont talk to), 15 have the death grips facebook page liked.

>I've never met a single person in my life that has acknowledged them. Every grandma and her dog knows who Kanye is.

try getting some friends other than your grandma and her dog then.

Death Grips are only important in providing secondhand inspiration to mainstream artists. The truly important noisy/industrial hip-hop acts happen to be Shabazz Palaces and Dalek. Death Grips aren't as important as you think, and they certainly aren't original enough to be a fitting champion for such bold claims either.

DG was set to open for NIN. Even David Bowie cited them as an influence on his last album.

> always wanted to do shit like mushrooms

Are they really junkies or is that just a meme?

Kanye is great don't get me wrong, he's made some incredible albums. But in the span of six years he released three great albums (MBDTF, Yeezus, and TLOP)

Exmilitary wasn't even released until 2011 whereas MBDTF was released in 2010. Death Grips are an incredibly prolific band that just seems to keep creating enjoyable and boundry pushing music. Pretty much all of their albums so far have been generally favorable to critically acclaimed. The only albums that seemed to drop in quality were their 2 instrumental albums but even those are pretty good (imo Fashion Week is slightly better than Interview 2016 because of how many different sounds they have on that album)

Bottomless Pit is about as critically acclaimed as The Money Store, the others are generally favorable.

From metacritic the albums are ranked as followed:

82 - Exmilitary
81 - Bottomless Pit
81 - The Money Store
76 - No Love Deep Web
75 - Government Plates
74 - Fashion Week
73 - The Powers That B
00 - Interview 2016 (not ranked on metacritic idk why)

theres a small drop in score as the albums progress but its very small and almost consistent. I also realize using one website is not very good for reference but metacritic is a culmination of other sites reviews so if you want to respond with some other scores that'd be cool, or else I might just look for other reviews myself idk.

is he holding a guitar?

He didn't claim them to be an influence in Blackstar. He simply mentioned that he listened to some of DG and Kendrick Lamar's music in the studio (likely shown to him by someone else), and tastemaker sites like Pitchfork twisted that into "being an influence".

Please explain why you believe Shabazz Palaces to be "truly important". You're stating opinions point blank as if they are fact with absolutely no attempt to back them up with any sort of reasoning. Am I to assume this is just because... you like them more?

no one knows who shabazz palaces are m8. i love them but most people don't give a fuck.

was reading through BP lyrics today, definitely have a psilocybin-y feel.

What? who are you quoting. do them man. they're fun and safe.
?
? no ?
?

>Yeezus and TLOP
>great albums
nice me.me you got there.

junkies dont make music. you dont get anything done aside from seeing to your ends let alone write music, perform music, tour, make videos etc.

I mainly like the first four tracks off yeezus, but the production and sounds are incredible even if the lyrics get a little stupid at times. Same with TLOP, personally I only really like about half the tracks (it seems to dip off near the back half of the album around 30 hours) but its still a decent album.

I hate this board

>Shabazz Palaces and Dalek
Niether of those groups are particularly good

Junkies do make music. Al Jourgensen is a shining example of that.

I doubt they are junkies. They're obviously open to drug use, but that doesn't mean they sit around and shoot heroin all day.

one junkie or three junkies don't. one junkie & a band yeah but it's hardly a sustainable situation (see rhcp)

>adult film actress Sasha Grey,

Yeah she was in a vaguely experimental band for a bit

this is true. They are alright but nothing special. Contrarians always bring them up in dg threads tho

people always say these things about this band.
does anyone actually believe they have anything to do with the punk music genre?
or do you guys just say that to sound indeh and knewl?

occultist magic

youtube.com/watch?v=uggrc_rcpm0
youtube.com/watch?v=tnnniIsw3b0

very certainly punk inspired, same with some tracks in powers that b

pretty much anything made after the late seventies is punk inspired,
but i just dont think death grips is musically punk
i think people just need to the word to be attached to them.
the band is very much more industrial, rap and electronic influenced than punk. in my opinion the only punk thing about them is thier attitude towards record companies kinda

>influential
>must be critically acclaimed

well youre right but some specific tracks like the examples i show definitely lean towards a more punk sound than hip hop, and mc ride's barking lyrics certainly can be compared to punk as well

people like their labels, punk fits some areas of the bands sound but that's it, only some

well i mean you can compare anything to punk.
im just.saying the.band is much more industrial, electronic and rap more so than punk and that they are punk band at all, i mean dmc has some barking lyrics? its not so much a label as it is an adjective used ti describe music that recently has become a we wuz type argument

i mean dmx lol not Detroit metal city

...

>it seems to dip off near the back half of the album around 30 Hours

wtf man. 30 Hours and NMPILA are probably the 2 single best tracks on TLOP. Both 10/10s desu my senpai.

When I saw them live Zach came out with a blunt and threw it in the crowd

Fucking Zach. Always on drugs and shit. Love dis nigga.

I've definitely grew out of Death Grips in the last year or so (though NOTM is still my favorite album in the last decade), I agree that they're the most musically relevant and influential even if it hasn't show much right now. It will though. I think they are way ahead of their time.

They at least use casually, it is a possibility some of them may have a problem but it's never been widely publicized

Sasha Grey has an IQ way above the level of genius.

For entertainment, she watches the films of Fassbinder, Herzog, Truffaut, Godard, Bertolucci, Mallick amongst other even more obscure artists.

She understands the hypocrisy of contemporary morality and has exploited it to become a millionaire.

You have every Judd Apatow movie on DVD.

disregard that i suck cocks

I don't even like them but I can't think of any other band to come out in the past 6 years who've been as prominent as DG. Seriously. I see other musicians talk about them all the time as well, seems like everyone at least knows their name

DELETE THIS

She's a pseudo intellectual whore

It's a mystery

Whore maybe but she is smart.

>caring about critical acclaim
>thinking critical acclaim means anything in the 2010s
why are you so stupid?

So you didn't listen to Sue?

Sasha Grey is a genius in exactly the same way as Judd Apatow. They aim for the lowest common denominator and degrade themselves to whatever extent necessary to become popular.

Her place in porn was earned by her deciding that she'd do whatever.

Her music is trite and boring EDM, and doesn't do anything new, and isn't exceptionally well done either.

Fassbender (Not Binder, you moron), is an actor, not a writer or director, and many people enjoy. Herzog is mainstream by this point. Hell, all of those are easily accessible now. The important thing is it DOES NOT SHOW IN HER WORK.

She didn't do something clever. She understood that there was an untapped market that she could use to elevate herself, and that was pandering to extreme pornography and fetishes. Hardly a particularly difficult task. Savvy, but it doesn't take a genius to work out how to spit on someone, finger an ass, deepthroat, or get slapped.

She's not the pseudo intellectual whore as the other guy says.

You are.

>people always say these things about this band.
Yes.

Basically yes. People have called Charlie XCX punk, which is just ludicrous.

You could say they're "punk" in the vein that they're more indie, DIY, which reflects the values of the late eighties, 90s Hardcore scene, and defines a pretty common punk attitude towards how to make music.

Or in the way, and the subject matter they explore.

But it's really just a shallow way to call something edgy. Usually because they're ashamed of whatever genre the music is.

It's posts like this that make me embarrassed to like Death Grips.

How

College-tier shit

No one with the IQ of a genius would have to suck huge cocks and take them up the ass to become a millionaire. There are much, much better ways to make alot of money if you're smart and that is your goal.

>Fassbender (Not Binder, you moron), is an actor, not a writer or director, and many people enjoy.
I can't believe that you are so stupid that you did not even question that Fassbender is listed there with a bunch of dead european directors and went straight to calling user out on it. Shit you even called him a moron for it and didn't even bother googling Fassbinder before doing so.

Be humble or be humbled.

Kanye had (arguably still has) immense influence, on commercial music... It's impressive, but it's more like working in fashion than being a musician, it's not like he innovated music in any significant way, he just predicts/created trends.I like some of his albums but come on.

I always cringe when people like you talk about how DG are only popular in Sup Forums.
Don't you have friends? Weird/alternative music is pretty well-recieved nowdays, you got to have at least 2-3 hipster friends who are into DG. most young people have heared of them by now. You think it's just Sup Forums moshing at their shows? At fucking coachella?

Dalek is terrible, and the music isn't even close to DG in terms of innovation.
Shabazz are alright, but still, can't compete with DG.

It's more about their approach to music: no commercial effort, DIY production, very simple and raw live gigs.
If someone thinks the sound itself is punk he needs to get his ears checked. MAYBE the opening track on their new album is simillar to punk.

why lie though? why does every one want it to be punk, just like that all black band death,
WE. WUZ. PONKS N SHIET.

>pills bury dough boy

Jesus fuck I split my water

dickride death grips a little harder pls
