Html and css are not programming languages

Fuck you fight me

why? (im not a programmer please explain)

They're markup languages

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markup_language

html and css are used for creating web pages and text formating. You can't write a program use these languages

makes sense thanks.

I think you are a shit programmer

if css is a programming language then C++ header files are their own programming language too

This but move the stuff with great type systems (Idris, Haskell) to the top of the list

I like Java.
I think that Java is a neat language to learn as a first language. Python is a terrific number 2, learning both would be optimal. Java syntax is similar enough to C that the concepts would transfer over easily enough if you wanted to go with C, and are general-purpose enough that if you wanted to transition to some other (non-esoteric) language then you should be able to with minimal effort.
Java is fine, its bad programmers that are the problem.

>regex
>xml
'I write it on a computer so it must be a programming language'
Ms Word is my favorite.

regex is a language. And nobody mentioned xml.

How are regular expressions a programming language of their own? Are World of Warcraft macros programs too?

>regex is a language
So is English. OP's only gets paid if his market research surveys programming languages specifically.

> How are regular expressions a programming language of their own?
That depends on your definition of "programming language".
But really, we all know the only reason you're getting pissy about it is to try and make yourself look smart over something that doesn't fucking matter.

Like, who cares? It's a language, and still a useful part of programming.

user, I am in the middle of a CS 1 semester so I am not in the market of making myself look like more than I am. However I do know that a function of a programming language, a programming language does not make. While regex is - incredibly - useful, its almost like saying that for loops are a programming language.
A better analog would be that sed and AWK are programming language (which they are) but are mostly used as functions & scripts rather than full-fledged programs in of themselves.

> user, I am in the middle of a CS 1 semester so I am not in the market of making myself look like more than I am
Yes you are. The fact that you're even wasting time arguing about it is proof of that.
Nobody cares whether regex counts as a "programming language".

Haskell removes the 'fun' from functions

Given I've only worked with C#, Java, JavaScript, Objective C, Ruby, and PHP, I'd say I actively like C# and actively dislike PHP. Objective C isn't that bad, but it's a one big "why". JavaScript is okay-ish for its purpose, but CoffeeScript is retarded.

Try a different hobby. Programming isn't for you.

I'm a retard so I like PHP and hate Javascript, for some reason I can build something easily with PHP but doing the same thing with Javascript even meme shit like Vue.js 2 and Node.js is like fighting windmoms.

2 years ago C# was ridiculed on this board. Now A lot of you are listing it as one of the favorite languages. What happened?

Kids grew up and started working.

all languages are ridiculed
we just had a c# thread two days ago that started with 'what went right?' and everyone responded with 'nothing it's shit'

just how Sup Forums works babe get used to it

WHERE IS JULIA REEEEEEE

Rating of the languages I learned/tried learning:

Best:

That's all I've worked with besides scripting/shell languages like PowerShell and bash.

Depends what I'm doing. Might seem simple and heavy-handed but I actually like JavaScript especially when I'm doing web design or web apps. Script with python and math with Haskell. C# for applications mostly because I hate Java and xamarin is pretty cool too for cross platform mobile app design.

why trash python? Its great language and easy to set up some shit with raspberry

The damage python has done in the mind of novice programmers is beyond repair, and in exchange of what? Is not the best tool for any of the applications it is proposed for, not the best for mathematics, not the best for scripting, not the best for anything.

>The damage python has done in the mind of novice programmers is beyond repair,

Please elaborate. People I got a career in Finance/Analytics and picked up SQL by critically reading the queries the SQL dev and DBA sent me. I tried to learn proper programming with Python but it was a horrific trainwreck of atrocious pedagogy. I tried textbooks, MOOCs, Youtube video series, and websites.

I made it through the first 100 ProjectEuler problems but it was awful and I eventually gave up, returning to a career in my passion: Linguistics.

Sometimes I think about going back for the money though.

Taken further, Minecraft is also a programming language since redstone is turing complete.

Turing completeness doesn't make a language good for programming. CSS and HTML are great tools, but if they're all you're good at then you won't go far.
