Hey guys. I'll admit something, I'm pretty new to music. I've only been really engaged in listening to music for around a year and a half and I got into listening to full albums like half of that. The only albums I've gotten really into so far are Sup Forums core albums. I'm looking to broaden my horizon and I want to find more obscure releases. What are some things I can use to find albums that I would like? Also if anyone has any recommendations for me that would be great. Right now my five favorite albums are Slint - Spiderland, Talking Heads - Remain In Light, Animal Collective - Feels, Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, and The Cure - Pornography. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

This one is an incredible album, but also very easy to enjoy and it might open up some strange post-industrial music to you, since Edward Ka-Spel collaborates with Nurse with Wound. It also rarely gets posted on Sup Forums and I've never seen the Pink Dots discusses on here.

RYM charts for genres you enjoy, scouring the ratings of other people on RYM who give those releases high scores but have somewhat unique taste, lists by users you find that way

outside of RYM, you should look up the bands you like on google and try to read professional criticism of them. Allmusic is good, some personal blogs can be great. features on Pitchfork are usually good if they focus on one artist or one album, but their review section is shit. Wikipedia articles can sometimes be useful as you get more and more obscure, but for this level, that will be useless to you. the idea is to get an understanding of where the artist fits into history so you can decide if you wanna explore their scene more, their influences more, or their followers more. names for all will usually be easy to find.

be creative in your exploration, and do NOT follow Sup Forums flowcharts, essentials, etc. religiously. start a last.fm or RYM if you haven't already because it will be fun to look back at this period, but don't share them with Sup Forums. participate in large generals and sharethreads, but don't take anything else on the board too seriously.

Good on you for being honest. Seriously, the sticky at the top of the Sup Forums page has great lists of album by genre, found it very helpful. Some recs from a slight newbie as well: for Neutral Milk, try The Glow pt. 2 by the Microphones; for for the Cure, try Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life; for Animal Collective, I'd just suggest digging more into their catalogue, especially Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam. I also love those albums. Hope this helps.

thanks everyone! ill be looking into your recs and your advice.

Not obscure, but listen to Interpol if you already haven't. I've been listening to them a lot lately and I think you'll like them!

Cool top 5, btw. Love all of those

If I had followed most AnCo flowcharts I would've hated them, luckily i ignored them and went straight to STGSTV and I truly appreciated the rest of their work and loved them.

So yeah, fuck flowcharts, explore discographies your own ways.

i love turn on the bright lights but i havent listened to any of their other stuff

Their later stuff is more accessible and less melancholy, but still pretty great imo

this guy knows what's up. also crucify me if you must, but honestly pitchfork and the needle drop aren't THAT bad for introducing new, less well known stuff. there, i said it. just don't put too much thought into the scores, lots of times they're subjective bullshit.

i think youll like this album youtube.com/watch?v=l3zMsofGYZ4

also bandcamp, but it can be really hit or miss.

ive listened to every animal collective album at this point. them, the cure, and modest mouse are the only bands ive really explored in full. ill take your word for it with future explorations of band i want to get into

This thread is great so far.

OP, I'd recommend Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth if you like Talking Heads.
youtube.com/watch?v=PVwJMOtfJbU

Also Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn by Do Make Say Think if you want some post-rock+jazz

Radiohead might fit in with your taste as well

actually i shouldnt have linked this because its pitched up

ill find a download of it or something, thanks for the rec!
ive listened to daydream nation and radiohead and i love them both! but i havent listened to the do make say think album you mentioned so ill check that out.

>ill find a download of it or something, thanks for the rec!
definitely check it out. i love the artists you mentioned and i think youll enjoy it. also check this album out
youtube.com/watch?v=Lfohg09AQ6s

ill check that out too!

yeah, exactly. AnCo are memed up on Sup Forums where new users are told to listen to MPP (good advice) and then to listen to all the other psych pop albums that also sound like MPP. people go years just listening to the "core" AnCo albums and forming edgy opinions about CHz and PW because the board pretends Danse and Hollinndagain and HCtI are like complete shit albums. it's like a self-fulfilling cycle and i'm glad more Sup Forumstants are breaking it.

the problem is that people will check out Pitchfork and theneedledrop and then start filling their new music time with 8/10+es/BNMs. it's really unfortunate, 'cause listening to brand new releases is the worst way to get a broad understanding of music, especially when you're taking all your recs from two very similar sources. i think Sup Forums would benefit from having more people coming from a metal, classical, jazz, electronic, etc. perspective on popular albums as opposed to everyone being an indie drone who finds their way into other genres by the albums that are acceptable to these publications. just my two cents, though.

...

also, i haven't given album recs yet. based on Talking Heads (one of my favorite albums, too!) check out Fela Kuti's discography. you can start in a lot of places, but Roforofo Fight, Zombie, and Expensive Shit are the most popular.

AnCo check out their early stuff if you haven't yet in chronological order.

for stuff like NMH, Olivia Tremor Control is an obvious go-to. there's also lots of wonderful '60s stuff that inspired NMH (and AnCo too) that doesn't get a lot of exposure here. try Song Cycle by Van Dyke Parks.

op here. heres a list of my favorite artists in case anyone wants to rec me some albums based on these artists

thanks for the recs! yeah ive listened to all of ancos albums and i really love spirit! i dont enjoy danse or hollinndagain that much but i might give those a few more listens and see if i end up enjoying them

based on Agalloch, it would seem you have gotten used to hearing harsh vocals. you should try some earlier black metal stuff. first wave fans are starting to show up more and more on Sup Forums with /metal/, and there's some canon stuff from that that you should check out like Sarcofago's INRI. especially if you like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, first wave seems an obvious place to start. i don't like second wave as much, but Burzum is probably closer to Agalloch (the long ambient passages are similar to Agalloch's greater emphasis on atmosphere) and might be up your alley. there's nothing wrong with not listening to tr00 black metal, but a lot of people are turned off by the fanbase talking shit about Deafheaven or whatever and never actually check out the goods. Peste Noire might also be something you'd like.

try this OP youtube.com/watch?v=E5ONTXHS2mM

thank you for this! im actually looking into getting more into metal so this definitely helps!

oh fuck i meant to put whoopsssss

Complete curiosity, OP: how old are and what sparked your interest in music < 2 years ago? It's never too early or late to give the good stuff a try. I'm merely curious.

It's really rewarding to do the exploration yourself, though it may take longer

lmao im 15. i know im young but i don't think that should prevent people of my age from enjoying the music that is commonly discussed on this board. and i really got into music from listening to daft punk, which from their i decided to check out some other artists. then i started to get into indie and alternative artists such as the white stripes and the strokes. my taste evolved from their into many different genres and artists and i started to get out of my comfort zone a bit

damn if youre only 15 by 20 you will have amazing taste. i didnt even give a shit about music until i was 17

Made you a chart specifically for recommendations for Spiderland. The albums that are really similar: Flemish Altruism, Engine Takes To Water, and Rusty. But ALL the albums on this list are worth checking out if you liked Spiderland. June Of 44, Rodan, and Rachel's are made up of people from the same city Slint is from; Brian McMahan even helped record a song for Rodan's Rusty album. The aforementioned bands also share members as well.

The For Carnation was Brian McMahan's project after Slint. Slowcore stuff, a lot of is great.

David Pajo had a solo project called Ariel M/Papa M, Live From A Shark Cage is where you should start. If you like that one then check out his other stuff.

Just some samples^, but as I said all of the albums on the chart are worth checking out.

kid you are destined to be a hipster, start listing to PUP and fulfill your destiny

Great to hear. Like someone else just said, I didn't really get into music and full albums seriously until I was 16 or so, but even a lot of good shit would've gone completely over my head. Glad to see someone proactive about establishing tastes so early on.

>tfw 27
>tfw didn't start getting seriously into music until now
>tfw all those wasted years

thanks guys, that's nice of you guys to say :)

aw man this is sick! thanks you for this ill check out the albums in the chart!

Fuck that. Even if it's approved Sup Forumscore, they're at least expanding their horizons and making an effort. I respect that infinitely more than everyone relying on the radio, Fuse, and NOW CDs in my youth.

I'd kill myself.

But seriously, I'm close to the same age so I've put about 10 years into the interest. It's never too late, you just have to crunch and make up for lost time a bit.
