Metal generally isn't an intellectual genre. Just dynamic riffs and alot of forward momentum.
The bands that take time to appreciate aren't difficult because they're metal, it's because they're incorporating outside influences.
As much as i love doom, black, goth and whatever neurosis is, If you don't like NWOBHM or thrash you don't really like metal.

Real metal fans can tell you better but just like the Classical scene, Metal suffers from a huge number of casual players who are not very accomplished at their craft.
It ends up being a bunch of bang, clank, gong, wonk, etc.
In other words, it's a whole lot of work and it still said nothing.
Classical benefits from the extreme level of technique that is necessary to achieve master status. This gives connoisseurs a place to go once they are bored of the mainstream.
Metal needs to further develop it's own connoisseur level if it wants to stay relevant.
