it was very proto-punk. at least, songs like Tombstone Blues, From A Buick 6, and LARS had a sort of speed and vigor that hadnt been seen up to that point.
apart from that, you've also go the first instance (or one of the first, iirc ) that incorporated a large electric sound to a r&b style composition. i mean, how can you listen to a song like Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues or Ballad of a Thin Man and say its boring?
